: Oil filter wrench for tight filters
jwfab1 07-27-2005, 11:17 PM I've read alot about the factory oil filters being extremely tight.
I bought this a couple years ago and it broke loose a filter I thought I'd never get off.
Should of probably put this in maintance.

dan_diesel 07-27-2005, 11:48 PM I have one of those "belt" style wrenches that uses a square piece of tubing that is 1/2 inch drive compatible for your mondo-ratchet.
And I crushed my stock filter taking it off... But, it did come off... :D
dh515 07-28-2005, 04:50 AM I used a Penzoil conventional metal strap type filter wrench I got at Pep Boys because I couldn't find the one I normally use. Bent it like a pretzel and couldn't budge that sucker. Was lucky to find the other one and if I couldn't have gotten two hands on the wrench and been able to use some body weight on it, I never would have gotten it off. That Craftsman one looks pretty beefy.
Kennedy 07-28-2005, 10:26 AM Are you guys doing these when hot? Mine came off pretty easily, but then again, I did it with 85 miles on the clock. Never a problem since...

Those are the best "one fits all" wrenches going. Used mine now for 20 years.
txguppy 07-28-2005, 03:58 PM I bought a Snap-on Filter Strap #A91E. It is compatible with 3/8 or 1/2 ratchets. Kind of expensive, but my Dad has used his for probably 30+ years and still going strong, the Filter Strap, not Dad. Sorry Dad. :)

Actually, my filter was cool -- I drained the oil hot, but waited til the next morning to do the trans and engine filter... Is it easier hot?? I just figured the factory one didn't get it's gasket lubed when it was put on. Darn near had to get a breaker bar out it was stuck so tight... ):h
I did my 1st change at 1k miles...
I did mine at 1000 miles, hot. Came right off. I don't know what all this "tight oil filter" stuff is about.
BCHN4X4 07-28-2005, 07:02 PM Tight filters seem to be an issue with GM. My roomates girlfriend recently bought a new GMC 1500 with the 5.3. Well he had to change her oil and the filter was just as tight as mine was I did my truck. I think GM is over tightening these filters or not using lube on the filters gasket.

Much easier hot.
chipper 07-28-2005, 09:16 PM I had to drive my "giant "16 long screwdriver thru my OEM to get enough leverage. Couldn't believe it.
bettered 07-29-2005, 09:41 PM Changed my oil (to Delo 400) at 1000 mi. Had an old filter wrench that I've had for probably 20 years. Pretty sturdy. No problem with the filter at all.
Had a helluva time with the drain plug in the pan. Replaced it with the Fram whiz-bang. Used TxC's cardboard deflector and all was fine until I slipped out from under to get the container to take an oil sample (for analysis). When I got back 2 mins later, the cardboard had also slipped and oil filled up the skid plate.
But there wasn't a lot of oil, just the dregs. Took my sample and buttoned it back up. Instructions on GM filter (OEM filter) say to "put it on hand tight and then with a suitable tool, give it another 1/2 turn." That's what I did..
sr511 08-16-2005, 11:52 PM I just changed my oil for the first time at 3500 miles. I couldn't believe how hard the factory filter was to get off. The instructions on the factory filter said to tighten the filter as tight as you can make it by hand, then turn it one more turn with a wrench! Filters seem to get tighter after they've been on for a while. I've lerned to hand tighten only and never use a wrench for installation.
