Hello,
I have an 04 Dodge with the 305hp, 555ft/lb Common Rail. What did Cummins/Dodge do different to the 04.5 to increase the power to 325hp, 610ft/lb?
Thoughts???

For one thing they put a 4" exhaust from the turbo back. I also understand the 6 speed 04.5 and up trucks are only 600ft lbs.
There is something else but I cannot think of it right now.
Enhanced fuel system including larger multiple injections.
Exhaust system increased to four inch diameter from turbo to tailpipe to reduce backpressure.
Larger compressor within the same HX35 housing.
Higher flow design intercooler and engine-mounted shroud for improved forced air flow and cooling.
Added rubber isolators for the valve cover bolts and further reduced the noise at idle by changes to pilot injection.
Higher flow design intercooler and engine-mounted shroud for improved forced air flow and cooling.
Electronically controlled wastegate (to get the benefits of variable geometry without the complexity)
Controller with about 50-percent-more code in it.
New exhaust manifold (with two-stage gasketing)
Hardened valve seats with Inconel exhaust valves in Stellite seats, bigger piston bowls, and piston cooling has been upgraded.
Thoughts?
Everytime they upgrade power, mileage goes down. The 305 gets better mileage and did not come with a cat.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the information. I've running stock with the exception of the Pac-Brake. I'm pulling a HEAVY (16K) 5th-wheel and have been quite happy with the performance and economy.
That being said, I just made a trip to Colorado and headed west accross the mountians. Wow! my Engine got Hot QUICK!!! EG at 1100 - 1200!!!
I had to pull over and let her cool down 3 times. Not sure what I can do to help with the temp but was courious about the difference... Has anyone else experienced this?????

If your egt probe is pre turbo, 1100 is not all that terrible. I don't believe you need to cool down. It the truck cooling system holding up?

EG Probe is after turbo..... Engine Temp guage was pegged in the RED!!!

Sounds like you have a problem. Try posting on TDR. Not many Cummins brains here.

opening up the exhaust would help a bunch [maybe just a cut out after the DP to help on hills, or whole new system], as well as the intake side.. [a new clean paper element and some swiss cheese action to the bottom of the air box maybe.. or something else like a bhaf element or some cold air intake kit] with those temps it almost sounds like the boost is a little low. you should be running about 26psi with your load...

I agree. When will enough power be enough? They ( All of them, GM, Ford, Dodge. ) need to stop the power wars, and work on fuel efficiency, running cleaner, and any other issues they may have!! ( Not lookin to start a war here, just my 2 cents!! )
Take care,
Will

running cleaner
the new 325/600 engine is pretty clean as it is now CARB certified... but emissions controls will kill fuel economy... lots of timing will make fuel economy better, but that will send NOx through the roof, and that is a "harmful" emission so that can't be had...
fuel economy has gone down hill since the switch to electronic controls, and it will not get better any time soon
