I took a 3200 mile trip to Florida this year and pulled the RV the whole way. Everything worked great and I got 12 mpg. VERY happy with the truck.
However,
The previous owner had straight pipes installed with only a resonator. I posted a while back with a few questions and decided to remove the resonator to have a look. I found out that the tabs are facing forward. I understand this is the way you need to mount it for the most quite operation. The tabs catch the exhaust as it exits.
I think I will buy a muffler to quite the truck down even more. The drone is only bad when pulling the RV. Here is a picture of the resonator. It is 24 inches long. I would like to keep the resonator and add a muffler. I am not sure where the muffler will fit. The exhaust pipe is straight for a bit then it bends around a cross member before it enters the resonator. Has anyone ever seen a setup with both a resonator and a muffler? If I cant have both will a muffler alone greatly reduce the drone or is a muffler pretty much the same as a resonator? I know I can get a straight through muffler but is there a better style to quiet down the drone in a 4 inch size? Will this other style increase my EGT's?
I have tried the local auto parts stores and they just give me a worthless blank stare. I have also left a message for a local Diesel Place vendor and never heard back.
To recap,
I want to buy a muffler. I want it to fit on my existing pipes with the only modification being cutting out a section of pipe. I would like the muffler to be a flow through design, but if this doesn't quite down the truck I don't want to waste my money. If a conventional muffler, if there is such a thing, quiets the truck while decreasing hp and increasing EGT's then oh well. I really don't have a problem with ether issue.
