: Switching from Tow-Haul to Reg.
Slick 07-27-2005, 10:57 AM I would like to start the learn process in tow-haul with my Xtreme. When I switch back into reg. mode after learning in tow-haul, will it shift the same as it did before?
I would like to get it trained in tow-haul for racing, but don't want to have to do a relearn on the ally in reg. mode everytime I have to switch.
ratlover 07-27-2005, 11:04 AM I really dont think it has seperate learning parameters for TH vrs reg. I think it just learns if its a locked shift ect
Why switch outa Xtreme? mine lives there untill I take a road trip and then it goes into 80 once I hit the cruise(unless someone strats tailgating me;) )
ratlover 07-27-2005, 11:06 AM I have a feeling if its trained to Xtreme in TH and then you do a bunch of WOT runns in 80 or something in regular mode it may start to relearn. You have an 01 though and you learn a wee bit different I think......
Slick 07-27-2005, 12:32 PM I don't mean switch out of Xtreme in reg. mode. I was just planning on racing in tow-haul to get the converter locked.
Trust me the switch isn't moving.):h
Mike L. 07-27-2005, 12:41 PM I believe once it learns in T/H the strategy will stay there providing you make no changes in programing.
Slick 07-27-2005, 12:49 PM Cool deal. Is it better to start off the learn in the lower settings and work your way up in tow-haul or just leave it in Xtreme.

Slick 07-27-2005, 01:57 PM Duratys, I believe that strategy was for right after you install a power adder. I'm not sure if I should do that for learning in tow-haul. Philip and others seem to think that the TCM doesn't learn separately in tow-haul. So starting from the beginning may not be necessary.
ratlover 07-27-2005, 02:21 PM I dont know.....this is just theory. I wish I had a tech2 becasue I would be able to figure it out.
I am not sure but it kinda does and kinda dosnt IMO. I dont think it has a TH table and a regular mode table. But it will use tc lock up, rpm, load, throttle position ect to figure out how to shift. At lower throttle positions TH is quite different from regular since the converter's lock up stragety is waaaaaay different. But WOT regular mode locks up the converter.....so some shifts it may have learned from another mode. Thats just my theory. Dont know if its right or wrong???
I thought that the learned values were very seperate from each other and that one cell couldnt partial learn from another. Cells bringing info from other cells meaning if you get your trans train to WOT it wont say, well I need to do X at WOT so 1/2 throttle should be about like Y and then do fine when it gets some more input from some actual 1/2 throttle driving. I thought that each learned value was put in a specific cell......I got this mostly off of how I noticed it seemed to "learn" with my edge. Also that a simple if I see X then I will do y is much simpler than some sorta fuzzy table were its constantly trying to learn and apply those to everything. A simple table of if I see X then I do Y would keep it from doing what some describe as the whole "drive it hard or it will learn to shift like a weenie". Now I'm not sure.....maybe some its learned values cross over more than I though....or well they cross over period would be the correct way to putit. It would take someone that knows how the TCM learns or someone with a tech 2 to do a bunch of driving to watch the taps to answer these Q's IMO.

I took from that thread.....Diesel Tech can correct me, that you would have to do each power level in T/H and out of T/H untill the highest level was reached. Once there..... Set it and forget it. If you were to go to the track use T/H to get to the track and doing WOT runs on the way there will limit the amount of time it will learn at the track.
Mike L. 07-27-2005, 03:02 PM T/H does learn separately. Sorry if you missunderstood me.

ratlover 07-27-2005, 03:10 PM So mike seems to think I'm FOS:bleah: ):h
Seperate like you think there are 2 different tables??? Maybe I'm just nuts but it seemed like my trucks TH WOT was 1/2 way trained by the time I got to that level after I made it through reg mode?
Mike has spent more time with his eyeballs burried in a tech 2 than I have so I'd listen to him as apposed to my hairbrained theorys:D
Mike is the man
ratlover 07-27-2005, 03:12 PM So what was the question again? Put it in kill, drive the piss outa it in TH and regular mode, by stock in goodyear. ):h I'm not seeing a problem here:D

That's what I do. On the way to the track, with all the power turned up run WOT in tow haul mode. Three or four blasts on the way has helped trans shift at the track.

GMC-2002-Dmax 07-28-2005, 01:26 PM A Tech II will show TAP cells for the upshift and downshifts seperately as well as 0% throttle downshifts.....
There is a TAP cell 0,1 and 2 for each upshifts as well as a bunch more for downshifts and for each gear change as well.
I recently did the FAST LEARN/RESET on my tranny............it has greatly improved the Normal and T/H shifts from what they were.
I have no idea as to why the tranny got confused......but the 3-4 shift sucked for a while in T/H on mine........
But all is good now.

I was told to get the tranny learned in T/H with WOT shifts up thru the 5 gears.........then once it has learned T/H do not drive in it except for racing........
I have found that the Co-Pilot will really click the shifts off nicely in drag race mode...........no learning is needed it seems........;)
Slick 07-28-2005, 01:49 PM Thanks good info. Tony.
BullydogPowered 07-29-2005, 07:33 PM my truck tries to learn all the time. if i use T/H for a day and not the next it has some crazy shifts. i dont really like the learn feature at all.
