Hey everyone. I'm a newby to Diesels and this forum but couldn't it also be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter or something other than the injectors ? I would think the filter would be the first thing to check or replace? Anyway, Like I said , this is all new to me but just a thought.:)

My LLY has been to the dealer several times for this exact problem. After running tests for WEEKS, all they could find was a possible problem with the fuel regulator. This fixed it for a while. The shop MGR drove it home (90 miles round trip) for a couple of days and could not get it to smoke. Maybe I drive a little aggressive, but the excessive black smoke at no or very little load is unusual and the knocking is scarey. Is there a chance that a bad injector will test OK? Is it possible to have a clogged CAT at only 30k miles? I think maybe my neighbor put some off-road fuel in it one time, could this have hurt anything?

water is about the only thing that seems to realy mess up the squirters, off road diesel will not "hurt" them.

It helps if you post what you have, any adders, miles, maintenance schedule, etc. I agree with Bluestreak, sounds like you need a new feul filter. If it's injectors they tend to smoke at start up as well, you say there are no issues until you get up in speed.

Search for old posts on this issue. The matter has been around for sometime. Number of fixes, with varying degrees of success. Personally
had the same problem about a year ago. Was able to track it down to bad diesel. Don't buy there anymore. You get what you pay for. Changed fuel filter and added additive (Powersource - Wal*Mart). Have not had a problem since. Always use additive now, added cetane not bad to have and do not worry so much about fuel. Beware of any fuel that smells odd, like moldy.

Just my $.02
