: Water/methanol tank over wheel wells for long towing?

I experienced high EGTs while towing heavy 5th wheel (21k GCW) in the mountains this year. I am interested in installing a water/methanol injection kit, primarily to reduce EGTs, but wouldn't mind the added power as well. HOWEVER... The optional 8 gal tank (usually about $150-$200 extra) is probably not going to cut it, let alone the 1 or 2 gal tanks that come standard with the kits. On a long day of driving, in mountainous terrain, I can spend a total of a few HOURS in high EGT towing, and have no burden to be constantly adding water/methanol into a tank (I bought my 65 gal Supertank to avoid these types of hassles with fuel).

To me a practical solution would be a tank mounted above the wheel well in the truck bed, allowing for easy access, while not taking up usable space. The only company I found that sells something like this is Tour Buddy, which makes an 11 gal tank that covers 1/2 the wheel for $340 (2 can be combined to run the full length of the truck on one side, or 4 can be combined to run along both sides above both wheel wells):

QUESTION: Would this solution work using water/methanol?
QUESTION: Does anyone know where a cheeper tank can be bought?
QUESTION: Anyone aware of a solution involving a tank mounted UNDER the truck somewhere?

It seems like there would be A LOT of towers interested in a large tank solution (considering the benefits of w/m injection) so I'm surprised that a large(r) tank solution hasn't been pursued.

Thanks,
Paul.

Another possibility?... http://www.discounttoolboxes.com/cgmc7802fulllwb.htm

Here's a 16 gallon tank that's more affordable.http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=22287&R=22287

Here's a 26 gallon tank that's more affordable too.http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=21805&R=21805

Thanks Jake. I like the price, but... I'm looking for more efficient use of space, and Plastic-Mart has an incredible variety of sizes to choose from. My shortbed has the following space in front of the wheel wells:
62" wide, 22" deep, 19.5" high. The following (larger) sizes match nicely:

75 gal: 54 x 22 x 16
58 gal: 58 x 20 x 13
50 gal: 60 x 20 x 11
43 gal: 54 x 16 x 13

However, I'm also interested in getting a Retrax tonneau cover, so it would have to fit UNDERNEATH the rollup box on the Retrax, and also come forward past the front edge of the rollup box to allow for refilling. According to Max Power, the Retrax rollup box is 13" from the back of the truck bed, and the bottom of it sits about 9" above the floor of the truck bed. For this application, the following (medium) size matches nicely:

26 gal: 60 x 21 x 6 ($145 + ship) http://www.plastic-mart.com/class.php?item=768

...assuming that there's room behind my 5th wheel hitch-- I still have to throw my hitch in and measure. --Paul.

i kinda like this place too....I don't need to carry too much water as I'm loaded enough as it is......

Is 8 gal enough for a 200 mile trip? What is the flow rate ?

Some setups come with just one nozzle size, which produces a constant flow rate. Others allow you to put on different nozzle sizes, which produce different flow rates. And... single vs dual nozzle also makes a difference.

The kit sold by SuperDiesel uses 1/2 GPM-- gallon per minute, and I believe thats for the dual nozzle (see post #16): http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20619&page=2&highlight=water+meth

The kit sold by CoolingMist will go through anywhere from 1/10 GPM to 3/10 GPM PER NOZZLE: http://www.coolingmist.com/detailpage.aspx?pid=02D1notank
http://www.coolingmist.com/pagedisplay.aspx?feature_key=diesel

So you are roughly looking at 1/4 to 1/2 GPM. It should be remembered that methanol/water is only being drawn when the boost goes over a certain threshhold, so it's not like an 8 gallon tank is automatically going to be used up after 16 minutes... It MIGHT be used up that fast if you are pulling heavy up a steep slope for 16 minutes straight. It might last all day if you only experience short durations of high boost towing/racing.

The question you have to ask is: How much actual time am I going to be spending in high boost while driving for a given amount of time in given terrain? Next question: If the boost threshold is adjustable, at what boost setting should the methanol/water start being injected so as to provide only NECESSARY EGT/power enhancements, while not UNNECESSARILY using up fluid so that constant refilling becomes an issue.

Paul.

How high are your EGT's and what programming are you running? I've found that a simple Edge moduleon a lower setting makes it hard to hurt the engine with EGT...

I can hit 1450* stock or level 1 or no juice and Predator on tow tune. Didn't matter.

I do not yet have a box/programmer/chip... Highest I've noticed was 1350 and it was heading upwards so I backed off-- not sure what it would have reached, as I'm very conservative and try to keep it at/under 1200 for continuous towing. I monitor fairly closely on steep slopes. There were times when I crawled up mountains at 30-40 MPH, and I KNOW the truck could have done 40-60 MPH, but I had to back down because of EGTs.... had I been going faster, the EGT's would have probably been 1400-1600. --Paul.

Before you go any further try something like an Edge Juice or EZ on the lower levels. Since stock EGT's hit 1400°f with ease, I'd think that you could let them go a bit higher. The Edge will let you run more off the TQ of the engine where the stock program doesn't have the beans and wants to downshift and scream the RPMs so you see high EGT's.

For me, it seemed like I got the highest EGTs when in LOWER portion of a gear range (i.e. moving along fine on flat, then lugging at 1800-2000 RPM up a slope). When it dropped into a lower gear (higher RPMs: 2500+), the EGTs would go DOWN, but if I kept RPMs high for a while the tranny temps would then go UP (like 230-240)-- takes a while to get it back down once it gets up that high. I try to keep the tranny at or under 210, so it was a balancing act trying to keep BOTH tranny/EGTs in check. Engine temps were never an issue. I do have an all season front/shield across the front of my truck... that may have been an issue with airflow, but others did not seem to think it would matter very much. Seems like eng temps would also get high if the all season shield were an issue. --Paul.

I've found that the LB7 with a Juice works excellent for towing and EGT'son the lower levels are decent. I used to run a screen front, but performance dropped off due to intercooler efficiency drop.
