: 300,000 Miles on LMM

For the Canadian viewers

Reached 300,000 miles on my LMM……the truck has treated me pretty good….the only issue I have really had with it is that it left me stranded last week, but that was my fault for not taking care of the recall….
I have also replaced the radiator due to a leak at the seam….
Some fuel gel issues in winter time....
One tranny line…leaking
Also, right now, I have 2 glow plugs that need replacing….I’ll do that soon
Other than that….just oil changes…..tires, normal maintenance…
I am still on my OEM brakes….lots of meat left
Front end is still within spec….
I have had absolutely no issues with drivetrain whatsoever….
In combination with my secondary fuel filter, I have been able to go 50,000 miles before changing my engine fuel filter, and the cat fuel filter…but usually I change them out at every second oil change which is at 40,000 miles
I continue doing oil changes at when I reach 20,000 miles…but I also use a bypass filter….Blackstone says oil is still good…I currently have 21000 miles on the oil now, will change next week, and will send a sample to Blackstone, I will post the results
Now oil consumption….I used to add one quart every 10,000 miles or so….but surprisingly the last two 20000mile intervals I have had to add zero….
The only bone that I have to pick is with the bilstien shocks…..I replaced them this year because the front shock bottom bushings were hammered right out…..shocks were still good….the replacement shocks have only been in for about four months, and already the front bottom bushings are problematic…thinking about add a half inch spacer underneath the bottom shock mount….the problem most likely is caused by the truck front end moving up and down and maxing out, when having a trailer on, whilst going over bumps
Little more info….
6235 hours on truck
Used 21097 gallons of fuel
All in all a great truck…it has treated me well
Any questions I will try to answer ....
thmsfraz 09-18-2010, 02:13 PM Man thats awesome.Just goes to show you if you take a little care of these diesel trucks they will just keep going. And i was begining to think i was racking up the miles at a whopping 62000.
nuts46 09-18-2010, 02:17 PM Just broken in! Good Luck on the next 300,000:cool2:
shookme 09-18-2010, 02:36 PM Pretty impressive, sir.
You going to run that rig to 400,000mi. or buy a new one with an LML?
transferred 09-18-2010, 03:06 PM Wow, v impressive and thanks for the update...any chance of some exterior and interior pics so we can see if she's held up as well aesthetically as mechanically?
again congrats, I've got into the habit of changing rigs when I hot 100k which takes me about 3years but this just shows good ol' USA still makes the best in the business....:)

Gregs Manly GMC 09-18-2010, 03:15 PM Do you have a PCV reroute on your truck and what tune do you run on it. I sent PM a while back but know your busy. Good luck with truck and thanks for info on shocks.

dutchpilot 09-18-2010, 04:05 PM .any chance of some exterior and interior pics so we can see if she's held up as well aesthetically as mechanically?
Rob
Yeah I can do that.....let me clean it up a bit first....but the truck looks pretty good;)
Do you have a PCV reroute on your truck and what tune do you run on it. I sent PM a while back but know your busy. Good luck with truck and thanks for info on shocks.
Running stock tune with DPF delete.....no PCV reroute
jjr0419 09-18-2010, 04:47 PM That's impressive. What recall are you referring to?
sfcjones 09-18-2010, 07:24 PM Sounds like my truck, I am at 6645 hours and 311k miles but mine is a 04. Original brake and front end. Congrats
cbiers 09-18-2010, 08:31 PM Thanks for the update. I wondered how many hours you'd have on it, and 6200 isn't as much as I thought there would be but you are on the road a lot. I average 37 mph, so when I reach 300,000 my LMM will have 8100 hours on it.
cubanb343 09-18-2010, 09:22 PM Thanks for the update. I wondered how many hours you'd have on it, and 6200 isn't as much as I thought there would be but you are on the road a lot. I average 37 mph, so when I reach 300,000 my LMM will have 8100 hours on it.
My dealer reflashed my ecm when they replaced my EGR motor and my engine hours were wiped out! So I have no idea my total hours anymore-
But I imagine you idle sometimes... You can't really calculate engine hours by miles.
Also, congrats on getting to 300,000! I hope mine makes it that long
got-h2o 09-18-2010, 09:56 PM I want it!!!!!!!!!!
Gregs Manly GMC 09-18-2010, 10:00 PM Running stock tune with DPF delete.....no PCV reroute[/quote]
Just goes to show no PCV reroute and stock tune can go a long way. Thanks Dutch and keep her running. Drive safe bud. :)
ryanryan 09-18-2010, 11:49 PM x2....what is the recall for??? Is it recent? I have to bring my truck to the dealer for a glow plug and they mentioned something needed to be updated or whatever, but didn't specify at the time. I'm bringing it back this week. What was it for?
Wow, that's cool to have such high miles on stock brakes, stock front-end, etc. etc.
Are you going to be replacing it with a LML soon?
Paul Clancy 09-19-2010, 08:17 AM Hey DP! You are the man. I just love seeing someone get their moneys worth out of a truck. x4 on the recall-details please? Are you still delivering from Elkhart? What sort of 5th hitch are you using and how is it holding up?
Stay Safe.
Aahhyes68 09-19-2010, 08:37 AM That's great DP !
If you get a chance could you post your fix for the Bilsteins. I'm getting ready to order a set for my truck and might as well prevent the same problem you are having.
I tow a heavy 5th wheel, which Bilsteins did you go with ?
What's your avg MPG towing with those kinda' miles ?
:D
promax 09-19-2010, 08:56 AM What percentage of 300K was towing?
dan-o 09-19-2010, 01:34 PM If you get a chance could you post your fix for the Bilsteins. I'm getting ready to order a set for my truck and might as well prevent the same problem you are having.
On my Bilsteins (extended length nickel finish for t-bar cranked applications) I replaced the constantly failing, gummi-bear lower bushings with Energy Suspension Poly bushing #9.9108G.
You need to cut the metal sleeve to proper length and trim the bushing itself (basically only the diameter for the bushing hoop is correct) but they work great. $12 from my local speed shop.
cdn111 09-19-2010, 02:47 PM I bet the recall is for the ecm memory loss where truck will not start. The recall has been out for a long time but they dont always get taken care of

I was looking at the 2011 out in front of your dealership...nice truck...Looks like they improved on the frame and front end....also from what i understand, GM upated the Allison...plus improvements to the Duramax.....I'm gonna try to get another year outa mine....maybe buy a end of year 2011...we will see...

Gregs Manly GMC 09-21-2010, 08:49 PM Hi Dutch, sorry for so many questions but are you still running your cat, I know you deleted your DPF (which tuner did you use?). Only reason I want to know is with that many mile how does it hold up. Hope you get 1/2 million from your truck. That would be awesome. Thanks

stockrex 09-24-2010, 11:06 PM dutchpilot, pls share with us:
1. any fuel additive used?
2. tranny fluid drained and filled how often?
3. what fuel filter kit did you install? link if possible.
4. frontend, rearend and tfr case - what oil and how often drained and filled?
5. driving style - I remember like to set the cruise at 65 mph, how about unloaded driving? light on the pedal or heavy?
Thanks!
ryanryan 09-24-2010, 11:37 PM I took my truck to the dealer today for a glowplug and the recall I was talking about was: #09184 Remove insulation from over top of SDM Module. Obviously this wasn't Dutch's problem since he said his left him stranded.
Edit: Just searched and this is from a LOOOONG time ago!!!(the recall I had done)
ElCaminoManT 09-25-2010, 12:50 AM thats awesome!

I used Standyne for the first 100,000 or so.....but stopped using it because of hassle in winter time, always froze up...didn't want to carry it in cab...
Tranny fluid.....I have changed it about 4 times, but have only done 1 total flush....also done one inner filter...and about half a dozen or so outer filters
I use the Nicktane secondary filter setup....
Just changed all rear end front end oils this summer....transfer case about 3 times....use Amsoil synthetics in all....transmission synthetic in transfer case
Driving style.....use cruise alot...light foot...65mph....when I'm towing I use manual 5
Also I failed to mention that at one time I had that "LMM oil leak".....that has magically disappeared....drivetrain is totally dry...
Also had the odd issue with "service trailer brake system".....but usually occurs under extreme wet conditions...water always seem to get into the bumper connector for some reason...a little WD40 resolves the issues
LETHAL WEAPON 09-27-2010, 08:23 AM Hey Dutchpolit good to see 300k+ miles on stock injectors WOW....I just got 238k miles to go;)
50rck 09-27-2010, 05:52 PM About your front shocks bottoming out--Do u have air bags in the rear for the 5er's? I run air bags for mine. I used to put way too much air in them and that left me w/ very little travel in the rear suspension, causing my front end to bottom out and extend when pulling the 5er. The past few times I towed, I ran only a little air and the ride was very smooth. I didn't bottom out once.
The brakes still holding is what gets me. That's crazy they are still good.
mtb rider 10-03-2010, 03:54 AM Dutch, What's the Miles up to now???????!!!!!!? Hoping to see in the 500k klms....Haha

The info is in my first post of this thread......a pic of my odometer;)
sven_502 11-03-2010, 08:47 PM Dutchpilot, when you say the front end is still good are you saying it has the original wheel bearings? If so wow. What do you do in the winter? Wish you many more safe miles.
Slackers Diesel 11-03-2010, 10:10 PM Congrats!!!!
I have 106,000 on mine as of today. I have the same tranny hose leak coming from the cooler that I need to fix. I just got done changing all my glow plugs (#5 and #8 were bad) and my U joint on the rear shaft. I normally don't keep a truck this long, but I love it too much to get rid of it for a newer one.
transferred 11-03-2010, 11:45 PM Still waiting on those pics Dutchy;)

dutchpilot 02-24-2011, 06:38 PM what does the interior look like (seats ect.)
Drivers seat has some obvious wear;)....other than that the truck still looks mighty fine.
dutchpilot 02-24-2011, 06:49 PM A little update.....
Had to finally replace the 2 batteries....they were getting pretty weak lately...
Also had an issue with the 4WD system.....truck got stuck in rear wheel only low:eek:, how that happened, I don't know...
Had to get the transfer case module reprogrammed with a Tech2....my mechanic also informed that since my truck was new, GM has had 4 transfer case module upgrades available, but not subject to recalls, only available if you had problems with the 4WD
ryanryan 02-24-2011, 07:03 PM ^^How many miles to date?^^

blkdmax05 02-25-2011, 02:22 PM You really gotta love hearing this, over 300k on the clock, half of that pulling and still running strong. I'm keeping mine until the wheels fall off then I'm gonna glue them back on and drive some more so I hope to be somewhere up there in mileage one day. Hey Dutch when your done with that truck send it my way, it wound be cool see how far she would go before something major happened
mtb rider 02-25-2011, 05:52 PM It would be interesting to get a compression test reading on this one. I'd bet it's probably right where it should be.

Well I believe a duramax could make it to a million miles, the numbers don't really add up. Based on the article if the pickup was 6 years old that would be 2200 days. Divide that by the mileage and you're talking almost 500 miles per day every single day for six years. I call BS on that. With 17 other pickups in the fleet they can't be running this thing 24 hours a day I wouldn't think. But who knows.
lotsofmiles 02-27-2011, 07:59 AM I dont know if I ever realized you were in Ontario. Last 4 weeks in a row I've run all the way across the 401 and into QC.
You better get moving, I'm going to hit 300K in March. Im catching up to you!

Yes, I think the same there. Especially since it's some kind of DMAX marketing article with no pics of odo or even the truck they speak of. I do however think one million is possible on these trucks. I know I have seen a Cummins with over a million but it had new head gaskets at 500, 000.
sycofiend71 03-02-2011, 08:32 PM Makes my 32,000 in my 2008 look like...well nothing.....hahaha. man I hope to get 300,000+ out of ol girl.

dutchpilot 12-28-2011, 09:54 PM Little update...
Don't use the truck in winter.....but currently at 392,227 miles
Everything great, no major issues, just glow plugs, overheating issue due to plugged rad, universal joints this year, still on original brakes and front end but that might change as truck is going in for a complete check-up in a short.
Also serpentine bearing failure this year...took out the belt....other than that, no real issues since truck new...just normal maintenance
creekr 12-29-2011, 10:36 AM Awesome. Mine had to have all brakes and rotors at 65000. Almost all 2 lane Wv roads
sven_502 12-29-2011, 11:15 AM Dutchpilot, how many engine hours do you have on that truck?
jevanb 12-29-2011, 11:16 AM man them are so miles
stockrex 12-29-2011, 11:44 AM Dutchpilot, how many engine hours do you have on that truck?
I asked the same around 300k and I think I did the math and it was around 50 miles per hour average speed,,
dutchpilot 12-29-2011, 12:14 PM Dutchpilot, how many engine hours do you have on that truck?
8292 hrs......the hours had been reset to 0 at one point because the dealer reprogrammed the ECM due to a recall concerning "service security system"....but I had already noted the those hours because I had just started this thread
By the the way, I have already met some guys who have more miles than me on their NBS trucks.....one guy was already over 500,000
jevanb 12-29-2011, 02:32 PM 500k thats is 342 miles every single day for the last 4 years if the truck was new
ramjammx 12-29-2011, 06:42 PM Clicked over 265k today. Have to do a few glow plugs. Still running strong and cranks right up! I've also replaced both front rotors and calipers. Need to do the front rotors again starting to shake a little. I love this van though holds up good i tow with it alot.
