I recently found out the splines and sliding yoke on my front driveshaft are stripped... I went to the local GM wrecker, he only wrecks GM trucks, sifted through the pile of front driveshafts. I found a couple that looked exactly like mine in shape, but were 2" too short. All were from 4L80E trucks. Apparently I need one from a '95-'99 truck to fit. Some of the ones I looked at were from '95 but did not fit. The unit from my truck appears to be the original. I may have to get original rebuilt....Any ideas?

There was a thread on another forum a few weeks back that had (4) variations of front driveshaft for a GM K2500. So yes there are differences.

It said you have to have transmission/transfer case info to get the correct unit. Also said there may be a sticker on the driveshaft itself.

I think New Venture and Borg Warner made transfercases for our trucks. Then NV3500 or NV4500 are different manuals and Auto's are different too.

Some 4L60s and TH700s out there as well as gasser vs Diesel configs, really need to match new donor with old to be sure especially at a bone yard, plus you don't know what other mods done say maybe a lifted truck requiring slightly modded for driveline angle improvement

steely:

when you venture back to your GM wrecker, see if he has the above item and how
much for it. I would need it mailed to me in CA. I don't have the part number right here
with me.

How much would it cost to have your driveshaft rebuilt? I recently had the front and rear shafts rebuilt on my ford. It cost around $600 for both (they had to be lengthened). If you've got a Fleetpride dealer near you, they can take your stripped shaft and put new ends on it. Most importantly they can balance it so that it doesn't prematurely wear out your new parts. And then factor in the time you'll spend trying to find the right match. just my 2 cents. good luck with it;)

OFF TOPIC.....I just filled up for $107:eek:

Rebuilt driveshaft up here is $275.00 includes U-Joints. One from the wrecker is $150.00 and I would not think of putting it in without new U-joints, $22.00 each. I think I will go with the rebuild.

I think you're better off that way. It might not be too much more to upgrade to heavier parts seeing as how the original one quit. good luck with it -Joi

Your truck is a 1/2 ton so it has the 8.25in front ring gear the 3/4 ton front end has 9.25in ring gear the larger gear requires a larger case the larger case means that the front u-joint is closer to the transfer case hense the shorter driveshaft on 3/4 ton as opposed to 1/2 tons.
