: some ?'s: shifting, coolant temp, egt's
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 07-25-2005, 11:55 PM Some questions:
What coolant temps and egt's are you seeing at the end of a pull? My last pull I could smell something was HOT. I looked at the pyro and of course it was pegged at 1600, the Attitude was flashing the coolant was 228 degrees. That was my first pull with the lift pumps. I had edge j/a on 5/5 and the Pred on 100 (both maxed out) at around 300 ft. it was popping pretty good so I backed the edge down a few notches which took care of the popping. Then it went from 3rd locked tc to 3rd unlocked and then downshifted to 2nd unlocked. It's done this a few times now. Tomac and some of you other guys that were at Indy it seemed like you manually downshifted your truck. When do you know when to downshift it?
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 07-25-2005, 11:59 PM Oh, and another thing: can you believe that with the edge on 5/5 and Pred on 100, with TTS dual lift pumps, clean air and fuel filters that the truck still doesn't roll the smoke out once it gets wound up? What's up with that?
Diesel Power 07-26-2005, 04:57 AM i usually see 16-1800 at the end of a pull. engine temps never move but i have a LB7
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 07-26-2005, 07:29 PM what about the downshift?
Dmax Tim 07-26-2005, 09:57 PM Oh, and another thing: can you believe that with the edge on 5/5 and Pred on 100, with TTS dual lift pumps, clean air and fuel filters that the truck still doesn't roll the smoke out once it gets wound up? What's up with that?
Our turbo moves a lot of air once it gets it act together.
ChrisF 07-27-2005, 12:20 AM same on the egt's 1600+ also, but engine and trans temp never over normal... also tis a LB7. Diesel Power... Are you going to be at Turlock? It will be nice to meet some of you guys for once. My friend Dan in the White Dodge dully CR has pulled with more guys from this site than I have.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 08-02-2005, 02:34 PM I think I figured out the coolant temp problem. I cleaned the bugs out of the radiator! The trucks only got 11,000 miles on it, but after I cleaned the radiator it's been cooling a lot better. I've never had to do that before.
WBlackford 08-02-2005, 02:42 PM sorry off topic, crow you pulling in bellevue friday night? For sure see you saturday, A big black stroker is rumored to be there two (in alburnet).
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 08-02-2005, 07:15 PM No, I'm not going to waste my time going to Bellevue. They'll make me take my duals off again, at Maquoketa I basically told them to kiss my a$$. I'll be at Alburnett. I've already beat the black Stroker once this year. But if he beats me I guess his money was well spent. (a lot of money!!!!)
dmaxlover 08-03-2005, 11:18 PM I run 1800+ deg every pull. I've never had to downshift, alway do my spin out in 3rd gear, but I do not run front weights.
WBlackford 08-03-2005, 11:50 PM Talked to BJ tonight track looks like crap but is improving. There will only be 2 classes male and female, run what ya brung (good for you duallys) dont worry doesnt offend me.

I've been to several pulls where I've had enough bite at the end of the track the truck actually downshifted. Central City, I never once broke the wheels loose! It was a bitin' track, downshifted then spun out at 311'. Clarmont it downshifted around the 355' mark and pulled to 367' when they shut me down (ran out of track.) It doesn't downshift all the time but it's happened. In Maqouketa I actually made it up to 4th gear on the low side (for a short period) then pulled it back down to third to end up at 333'.
Micheal Tomac 08-04-2005, 03:55 PM I've never seen coolant temps at or above 210.
EGT's??? Who has time to watch the track, tach, ground speed radar, EGT gauge, boost gauge and still drive down a 300' track at 20-25 mph while trying to miss holes, ruts and such.
Downshifting is a fine art. The trick is if you have to do downshift you want to do it just before the box tops out and the pan drops.
The only time I downshifted at Indy is on Sunday when I popped/split the turbo to intercooler elbow/boot. When that happened I lost most of my boost and alot of power so I downshifted to 2nd to try to get what I could but it didn't help much.

Well, I think I've got the coolant temp figured out - washed the bugs out of the radiator. It's helped out alot. Truck only has 11k miles on it. Never had to do that before.
Only one pull have I had time to look at the egt's. Tires were doing 20 mph but the truck wasn't. That was the pull that I noticed high coolant temps after lugging to 367'.
Where did you get the ground speed radar? Do you have a data recorder so you can analyze a pull when it's over or do you look at that as you're pulling?
