Hey Guys,
A question about Mass Airflow Sensors: Can I, with some mechanical ability, remove and clean my own, or is it best to let the Chevy House do it? No sign of problems yet, but I did run a K&N for about a thousand miles before I read about the oil/MAF problems. I've since put the stock paper back on.

Will a problem occur later or is it good if it's still good now?

Thanks. The information here is awesome.

If it is functioning fine now you should be set.

Many thanks. I'll leave it alone. That's usually the best (and cheapest) course of action for me :o: .

I pulled mine out on Sat. and cleaned it with electric contact cleaner. I've got 10,000 mi. on my filter and you could see the MAF was a little dirty but not bad. Still works fine.

I used some methanol from a racing bud. dont use regular rubbing alky since most of the time it has all kindsa other garbage in it. Everclear will work too and it has other madicinal purposes :drinking:

Can the cops give your truck a breathalyzer:eek: ?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm liking this truck, but the learning curve is a little steep. The last diesel I worked with was a 12V-149 Detriot!

The DOT can sniff the exhaust but they are looking for grams of soot per mile output. The cat is there mostly for NOX reduction so if you are going to be sniffed TURN OFF YOUR BOXES!

Other way around. Cat is for completing the burn. Carbon Monoxide and such. NOx are cumbustion products. EGR helps reduce these. Programming too.

DOT can sniff for it all if they want. They can "see" monoxide emmisions with a specialized camera at a distance. I don't know of anyone actually using the tech yet. But it is out there.

Just FYI in case anybody hasn't realized this yet, but you can leave the sensor in the lid and remove the lid. Contact cleaner etc works good too. Also do not spray while on the engine...

I can check mass air flow readings on an autoxray scanner I have but what is the air flow rate in pounds per min I would be looking for? Stock or with a programmer @ wot

Before I was unaware of the oil getting on the MAF from the filters I had a 97 1500 chev truck. The truck would lean out under wot and I could not figure out why, fuel filter and pressure was good, O2's were good. Took it to the dealer and they gouged me $500 for a new MAF, that fixed the problem. I wish I would have known better I could have saved 500 bones by cleaning it. I had a scanner then and I watched the MAF values, it worked they wen't up and down with the throttle but I did not know what the value should have been under WOT so I was unable to find the problem. And yes it was a K&N filter.-:t

How do you get to the MAF sensor to clean it? Where exactly is it located?

Nemo, take a look at the intake tube on the air filter box. It is the only senser on the tube ( at least on the 01-early 04) its small almost looks like a MAP sensor, unlike other cars with the huge plastic tube for a MAF. And its held on the tube with two screws, if I remember right they were torx screws. The only other thing thats on that tube is your filter restriction gauge.

Remove the tube from the filter box (hose clamp) Disconnect the plug into the MAF sensor. Remove the top cover from the intake filter box. The MAF sensor will come up with it. You now have easy access to the MAF sensor to clean it.

It takes special "saftey" torques to pull it out. You can get em at auto zone or where ever, its a torques with a hole in the end.

THAT's the stuff I needed to know! I appreciate all the info and responses.
