well, i put the ole girl up for sale and everybody comes and looks at her and says "really nice but what's that tapping noise in the engine". Now, i don't even notice it any more, (the infamous tappy tappy noise) so i tell everybody about the tsb on tapping noise and all that stuff, but then i get to second guessing myself and make an appointment at the local dealer for an "expert" opinion. they hook up the Tech 2 and ,via the killing cylinder method ,discover the noise greatly changes when cyl #7 is killed. the conclusion is injector #7 is making the noise, but since that doesn't fit into the prescribed memo for replacing the injectors for free, they suggest i wait until it goes completely, thus getting all eight for free.
does this sound logical and other than filling my crankcase with diesel and popping codes, do i run any risk waiting. what other consequenses do i run by waiting for it to die? how long do you think it will take? dealer says he really can't predict a time frame and no serious damage from waiting. it has been this way for 5000 miles at least.
thanks and sorry bout the long post.

Wow it sounds just like my truck. I got my 8 injectors replaced at 26000 miles. After I got it home and drove for a week I started to hear the same noise. Ive got 28000 miles and took it in today to find out what the problem is. They gave me a rental and I havent heard back from them yet. I wont deal with one injector being bad already. Ill keep ya posted.

If it was that bad the ballance rates would have been out and they should replace it for you. Do you know what the rates were on all the injectors?

I had done the balance rates several times with a predator and they were always great, -2 to +2 but nothing coming close to 6. the dealer said the return and balance rates were in spec.
what do you think?

I got my truck back yesterday and they said that it is just the noise of the injectors opening and closing. They gave me a copy of the service bulletin #15839227 which is addressing the knocking noise. They say its a operating characteristic and not a defect. I was kinda dissapointed because I didnt hear that noise prior to the new injectors being put in.

I am a believer in additives and 2um CAT Filters.

57,000 miles and this is my balance rates.

The WEBSHOTS Photo is not available yet..............gotta keep the interest peaked here...........give it a little while...........I know the suspense is killing you.............):h

Or you could try to "RIGHT CLICK' the RED "X" and use the show picture function.............some pop-up and picture blockers will prevent you from seeing it............

Rudy-
Yeah, they gave me the same bulletin. they also said "diesels make noise ya know". I told them i knew that, i have had and driven almost every light ,medium and heavy duty diesel out there and none of them had 1 out of 4, 5 (volvo & VW), 6 and 8 cylinders rapping. just 1!! the rest of the engine is quiet. just 1 friggin cyl (inj) is rapping. i asked if they wanted me to bring in my powerjoke or my 3126 cat so they could do a noise test but they just smiled and referred again to the "bulletin"
rich
btw-when any of those other diesels had 1 cyl rapping, there was a problem!!!

Well, nuthin from nuthin, but the "ticking noise" is supposed to originate in the crank lubrication system. If it has anything to do with a connecting rod bearing, killing the injector to that cylinder would take the load of that bearing and could stop the noise. Could be a non-injector issue after all.

ooooh--this is getting ugly now. i really think the noise is #7 and it sounds like it's up high (this is using both stethascope and hose method--not real reliable).. Never thought of bottom end. stealer says #7 and wrote on the invoice "#7 injector noisy-no action recommended at this time". anyone have any issues with the crank bearings??
thanks for the heads up

I think you misunderstood me, richie. The "standard" no-problem tick is supposed to be a lubricating oil noise. I've had it on my 2001 for 150,000 miles now - not a problem. What I was saying was that the no-problem lube oil tick might be silenced temporarily by killing the #7 injector, not that it's a bearing problem!

you're right, i did misunderstand. sorry. well, guess i'll live with it and if it is an injector, hope it goes before 200k.
thanks for the input
