hey guys great info on the site, but most mileage talk has been with a boat on the back or something else heavy loaded. just curious on what the mileage would be around in city and highway, thanks a lot. Oh and if ur feeling kinda nice today....silverado 2500 dmax or f350? u can hate on the fords if u want as long as u have a reason:) again thanks probably going to buy it before the employee discount ends.

I tried out both Ford and GM before buying. The Ford PS performed excellent, but I couldn't deal with them. I ended up with a 2004.5 GMC 2500 DMAX Ally (ext. cab 4X4), and have been extremely pleased. I get around 18.5 MPG on the highway and about 16 around town. About 9-12 towing the Travel trailer. A friend bought a Ford PS Harley edition, and gets only 13 MPG, tops. In fact, I saw her today and see said the DIC was showing 12.7. Glad Ford wouldn't deal with me now!

I have been getting between 17-18 hwy @ ABOUT 70mph
and about 14-15 city. Odometer has about 6800 miles.

As far a Ford vs. Chevy. Buy the one you like the best and fits you best. They all have good points and bad points.

17.6 on a cross country with about 2500 lb load no tow. DIC said 18.3 for same run. Currently 17.8 on the DIC. 15 miles to town on 55mph road and some in town. Probably 17.2 or .3 if hand calculated. Cross country speed was 70 mph on cruise for most of trip.

I've got about 800 miles on mine. Don't be disappointed if you don't get those numbers out of the showroom. Skytop's truck is just getting in to breakin.

I'm going to do some towing tomorrow and then when I get back after the weekend, I'm changing my 'break-in oil'.

I have about 1,500 miles on it and I'm getting only around 14.5 to 15.7 mpg mostly highway (some city) under 75mph (empty so far).
Do you guys think this is normal and I just need more miles on it?
How many miles until I start seeing the higher numbers you guys talk about?

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!~ :D

Driving characteristics and truck setups make the mileage vary alot. A regular cab 2wd with a ZF-6 in Nebraska with 80 PSI in it's tires driven at 60mph on cruise control will get pretty good mileage compared to a 4x4 dually lifted 12" on 36" flotation tires driven by someone who needs anger management classes.

Blue gets about 19mpg unladen on cruise control on long freeway trips at 70-75mph calculated by fuel receipts and map mileage. 15mpg towing an open car trailer with car (6,000lb).

Casper? The driver is enrolling in anger management classes as we speak.

Mileage isn't impressive at first, but it gets better. Mine has 24K miles and economy is a lot better than it was at 5,000 or 10,000. The truck has a 53 gal. tank which is really hard to fill exactly the same each time, so I go by what the computer says. But before switching tanks, I hand calculated several times and mileage was right there with the computer. Around town now it's maybe 16.5. Back in February, a trip to Jackson Hole driving mostly in 4WD on ice got 21.5 doing 55-60mph. Now, highway driving across Nevada on cruise control 70 it's 21-22 depending on the wind. Hard to drive less than 70, and on grades it's really hard to resist full throttle stomps. Go up to steady 80 and mileage drops to maybe 17.5-18. A friend's 6.0 Ford is a lot thirstier. And with an 80hp chip it's still not as quick, but it's a stick shift and he's had it to 125.

The only way to tell is drive em both. The Ford is loud and clanky and doesn't ride near as well as the Chevy. You just have to go by what you think is important.

I just got back from a 1200 mile trip with mine (empty with 2500 miles on the odo at the start) 75 to 80 mph for most of the way with some around town 5% and some heavy traffic 2%... hand calculated was 17.12 and according to the DIC 17.1. I was impressed!

On the highway, flat ground at 70 I got 20.5 on a 150 mile trip calculated by hand and DIC.

Found the truck I wanted in San Jose 2 weeks ago. Flew up the next day and drove it back to Southern California. I kept the speed at 65 to 70 on cruise control and got 20.4 mpg. That's calculated. The DIC pretty much agreed with my calcs. I'm really happy with it. $39,472 out the door.

I'm a new owner and encouraged to hear that the mpg improves as the motor breaks in. (790 miles currently). Have taken a couple of short trips on the road, getting 16.9 and 16.7 calculated, traveling between 75-80 mph. In town, its been much worse, around 11.7 mpg, calculated. I've been adding mods, so direct comparisons are hard. Recently added dual exhaust and the Predator 65 hp tune. Mileage on the DIC really went up with the tune, now averaging 14.7 mpg in town. Last time I checked, my DIC was right on the money with calculated. The Predator made a noticeable difference in power. Hope what I'm seeing is real on the DIC or does the tune change the reliability of the DIC? I've never found them to be accurate anyway and always hand calculate anyway.

Keeping the RPMs within the "Sweet spot" is critical for best mileage.
The Sweet Spot seems to be between 1700 and 2000 RPM. approx. 55-70 MPH with 285s
Lower than 1700 RPM doesn't seem to help any extra, and you are just going slower.
Higher than 2000 RPM and the mileage starts dropping FAST.

With 285-70-17 tires 2000 RPM is about 65 MPH "actual speed"
On the highway with 2 different trucks, (one only has 1,100 miles on it) I can consistently get around 20 MPG Hand calculated.

My combined mileage is usually about 15-16 MPG Hand calculated.

With Propane, The highway mileage increases by about 3 MPG, Even after factoring for the Propane usage. Around town I haven't done a direct comparison with propane.

21 mpg if go above 65 like 70-75 drops to about 18-19mpg city driving
been pretty good 15-16mpg cant complain much seeing how heavy this
tank is also i have 265-75r16 on truck couldnt stand the mini spares the
stock one comes with anyway also towing approx 10000lbs 65mph about
14-15 mpg good luck with your buy:ro)

If I am very light on the throttle and don't go over 60mpg I can do 18.5-19.5 with combined city hiway. On the hiway driving 70 I can get 19.5 all day. If I drive like I normally do in town and hammer it at the lights and all that I get 16-17. These things are really sensitive when it comes to speed and how you work the pedal.

It sounds like most of us are getting within about 10% of each other on mileage. I am quite happy with the mileage. I was hoping for more than 10-11 MPG when towing heavy, But I won't complain when I see that all of my gasoline engine friends struggle to get above that when empty!

I wish more of the vast majority of people who are having the great experiences with their trucks would post, instead of only seeing the posts of the few that are unhappy.
I guess that is just the nature of a forum though...

I agree, more should state how happy they are with their trucks. I am more than satisfied with my truck, I have about 30 thousand miles on it and have had no trouble with it at all. I am running over sized tires and wheels in the summer time and my calculated mileage is around 20 running 75 mph with the banks set on level 3. In the winter time I return to stock wheels and tires and pull my snowmobile trailer up north loaded with 5 sleds and 5 people in the truck gettin about 14 mpg at 70 mph. Cant ask for any more than that compared to anything else out there on the road.

I have 22k on mine and use the predator, maganflow exhuast, and a popular airfilter. the best mpg I get on the highway doing 70-85 is about 15-16 mpg. I thought it would be better than that. Do like the extra ponies the Predator gives me tho. it is a rush.:ro)

I've got a brand new 05 with a Hypertech and 2857516s.... I average 21 mph highway empty and 15-16 city empty. Towing a 30' trailer at 9500 pounds I average 12.5 with much of my traveling up in the Rocky mountains and uphill. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!! Hypertech made all the difference in the world...

I just got a 05 2500 RegCab 4x4 Dur Ally, $30,700, and its getting 18 to 19. I love it not one complaint even if it never goes over 19 because I used to have a 03 Dodge 1500 with a HEMI (gas guzzling monster) the thing was sweet but got 12 when I drove like an old lady but if you got on it would plummet into the low single digits.

I have found that there is about a 4 MPG reduction when I go 85 MPH vs 70 MPH. So 15-16 MPG at 85 is about normal. When I'm in a hurry I don't care so much about mileage though.

Just think, at those speeds the 6.0 gasser would be getting about 10-11 MPG And the 8.1 would be getting about 9 MPG!! Our Diesels are WAY more powerful as well. Isn't technology great?!!

I have an 03. My last check on mileage was 17 local and 21 highway. These numbers are real. I'm surprised with the 17 local, it used to be around 15, maybe the 40,000 miles is paying off.

I get a steady 13.5 MPG with 27K miles (LLY) , and this is 75% highway keeping the revs around 2000-2100rpm. It's a dually so I expect a little worse than a SRW but this is awful mileage. Still running stock tires. I was getting 16-17 with my last two F350s. I'm not happy.:( Going to the dealer today for a check-up.

Since we are on the topic of miles per gallon, diesel is just under $3.00 gal. in Sacramento :wtf1: . Diesel use to be cheaper than reg. unleaded, not more expensive than super Censored .

13-14 MPG in the city unloaded with moderate to heavy traffic and lots of stop lights. I haven't seen more than 19.5 MPG on the highway at speeds averaging 70MPH to 75MPH....

Just took a 3800 mile round trip to Florida. Truck was loaded down with 1500 lbs., myself, wife and two kids. Worst tank full mileage was 14.1 in the mountains of North Carolina, Virginia & West Virginia running 70 to 85 mph (ran up to the speed limiter pulling one mountain's 7% grade messing with someone). Best tank-full mileage was an 18.6 mpg down at the Keys (average speed was 45 to 65 mph this tankfull). Overall mileage for the whole trip was 16.9 mpg with highway speeds in the 65 to 85 mph range. All mileages were hand calculated filling the tank to the filler neck each time. My DIC varies too much to trust it. My truck has 6900+ miles on it and love it! My Suburban with a stock 350 gas engine was in the single digits (8 to 9 mpg), same weight, same trip, same driving habits!

Diesel is really getting out of site.

When going to work on Tuesday, one of the cheapest places in town was $2.70 for credit, when going home that night I thought I need fuel, price jumped to $2.82. .12 cents from AM to PM.

I did feel a little better when I passed a Chevron, & saw the price was $3.29. Now that is really price gouging.

My dad has my truck on vacation. It has over 12k lbs between the trailer and gear plus people and I think the truck weight included and he is getting an average of 13.2 mpg. Unloaded, he is getting 20.5 (better than I have ever got). I think the truck has over 30k miles on it by now and he likes it. I may not get it back...
