Basically just keep your foot out of it. The 6.0s don't get good gas milage period. You can look at getting a custom PCM from a place like Westers, Nelsons or PCM for less but thats about it.

My brother has a '99 1500 Z71 with the 5.3. He upgraded to 4.10s and did the PCMFORLESS.com tune and picked up 1.5 mpg. Total = 850 bucks for 1.5 mpg. Be a long time before he makes that money back, but it does run a whole bunch better towing and around town. You could expect similar improvements as long as your right foot doesn't get too heavy. Also, a taller narrower tire would help slightly, i.e. 235/85/16. This tire is about an inch and 1/2 taller and .6 inches narrower.

I suggest the Wester's tune. With 285s and a Wester's 89-93 tune, I'm getting 14.5-15 highway and about 12.5-13 city. Even if the tune doesn't do a lot for economy, it sure does make the truck run a whole lot better!

I went to the ends of the earth to try and better my mileage on my 03 6.0... never could get better than 10mpg city and highway.

I did hypertech, exhaust, headers, spacer.. mileage never changed.

Good luck.. I don't know how you guys are getting that good of mileage with the 6.0 and the 4 speed tranny..

I have kind of come to the conclusion that you need to get a full reprogram in order to see any difference. I also have a hypertech and I was not impressed with what it did. If I ever get around to it, I would like to get something that does a little more like a westers or one of those reprogrammed chips I have been hearing about. Until then, 11.5mpg is what I have come to expect.

I have an '04 2500 Sub with the 6.0 and regularly get 13.8 around town and 14.6 on the highway...with 65 psi in the tires. I used to run 50 psi and no matter what I did or how fast I drove 13.8 mpg city or highway. The xtra air pressure got me almost 1 mpg on the highway only. I shoulda got the 4.10s because It's driven mostly city miles.

Thats what I am getting with 285s, 4.10s otherwise stock.

In my opinion the 285s purty much negate any benefit...fuel mileage wise...that a tuner would offer. The extra weight and rolling resistence will definitely take it's toll. That's why I suggested the tuner with the taller & narrower tire like the 235/85/16. If fuel mileage is your ultimate goal I think that's the way to go.
