: I think I screwed up?
screaminjlew 07-24-2005, 08:57 PM While traveling home today from the coast, I left the beach and forgot to shift out of 4 whell drive...........all the way home all 140 miles:eek: I didn't realize it maybe because I had my trailer and my front end was a little light? when I got home is when I realized it. When I switched back into 2 wheel drive it worked fine and afterwards with the trailer unhooked I put back into 4 wd and tried to turn sharp on the road and I colud definetly tell it was in 4wd but, I could not tell with the trailer attached. I didn't make any sharp turns on my way home.
Does anyone think I could have screwed something up driving it that long in 4wd??? or should it be fine??
JLew:)

You'll be just fine...no worries....
mwgasman 07-24-2005, 09:05 PM It should be fine.
People drag race in 4wd. Some are pumping probably 700 hp through the drivetrain in 4wd with front diff lockers and it doesn't seem to be much of a problem.
Everyone at one time or another forgets to disengage 4WD when they get back on the road.

I tried to do a search first but I really didn't find what I was looking for so, I decided to post a new thread.:)

Dmax05 07-25-2005, 12:06 AM You probably got better gas milage.
ssduramax 07-25-2005, 11:57 AM You probably got better gas milage.
what? How would that work?
ratlover 07-25-2005, 12:28 PM Your fine but I'd change the fluid in the transfer case and the front end. Transfer case will hold 2 quarts of ATF, I'd use synthetice(my personal preference is mobil 1) so it will only cost you a few bucks. And you should change your fluid in the front end and rear(again go synthetic) after you buy the truck anywho.
ratlover 07-25-2005, 12:30 PM This topic comes up ALOT but I will admit that its probably hard to do a search on becasue the topic is ussualy something along the lines of Crap!, I'm stupid, what did I break, dont let a woman drive, SOB, ect ect ect...... ;) Dont feel bad:)

:funnypost  I have to say, most of the people on here have a great sense of humor.
Dmax05 07-25-2005, 03:18 PM You would get a little bit better gas milage becuase your truck is pulling easyer with the front tires turning along with the rear tires. It takes less to get the truck to the desired speed. But its only an increase of (MABY!) 2mpg if all the planets are in line and there is a full moon at noon.
partsguy662 07-25-2005, 03:24 PM I challenge you to test that theory, Dmax05....1 tank in 2wd...1 tank in 4wd.....(obviously this isn't going to work very well if you take a lot of corners on your daily commute)
I think you'll find that your milage is far worse in 4wd than in 2wd....Reason? You're taking extra power to turn those extra 2 tires, plus you're powering an extra driveshaft.
ratlover 07-25-2005, 03:27 PM Scott??? Someone hacked your account again???
Dmax05 07-25-2005, 03:34 PM you buy the fuel and I will gladly try it! lol
I have heard you get better gas milage with you hubs locked.
partsguy662 07-25-2005, 03:53 PM Look at it this way...If All wheel drive was more efficent that running in 2wd, don't you think that all vehicle manufacturers would set up their cars and trucks to be all wheel drive? It just doesn't make sense that 4wd would be more efficent..You're creating more heat since you're driving more parts (transfer case, front shaft, front differential) heat = wasted energy.
Like I said before, I'd love to see you test your theory out...

So, Rat your saying that I should change my front diff and my transfer case oils because of this incident, or is just something you would suggest as a maintenace item? I have already changed the rear diff.
JLew
ratlover 07-25-2005, 04:38 PM i WOULD CHANGE THE FRONT OIL AND THE TRANSFER CASE BECASUSE OF THIS INCIDEDNT AND BECASUE YOU SHOULD CHANGE EM FROM THE FACTORY FILL ANYWHO
Damn caps button
partsguy662 07-25-2005, 04:50 PM ratlover = Pnut today??? ):h
Dmax05 07-25-2005, 05:18 PM dealers dont do the smart thing, just like lockers are good for off road...but I only see jeep's with those from the factory. I am just saying, I thought you got better gas milage...but nevermind.

In the winter time up here we run our trucks in 4wd sometimes for weeks on end, thats what its designed for(snow/mud). Other than possible binding while turning on dry paverment you have nothing to worry about,Smitty
NOTNSUV 09-05-2005, 06:06 PM Aaahhh.. not exactly. Did the same thing in my '93 'Burb 454. 85 miles @ 85mph. Pulled into the gas station and had a puddle growing to a lake under the truck. Blew the seal between tranmission and transfer case. I had the local dealer (this while on vacation) change front and rear diff, transmission and transfer case fluids as well as replacing all the seals.
You may have gotten real lucky with this one but I would change out all the fluids anyway. The 4x4 idiot light on the '93 was on the floor shift; at least the new '05 is in the instrument cluster where it might be noticed in daylight.
