There has been many threads and posts for high mileage trucks and cars of all kinds. For this thread, I am interested in specifically LB7 Duramax's.

I have 191K+ on mine. It was bone stock until 185K. After which I installed the mods shown. I am the 2nd owner. The only major trouble the original owner had was injectors. I don't know when they were changed. I have replaced ball joints, a wheel bearing on the left side, instrument cluster, and a 4X4 encoder motor. It runs like a top!

Please post your LB7 mileage and mechanical details, and lets show Ford and Dodge who really has the toughest trucks on the road!

230,000. Previous owner had two sets of injectors under warranty. Last set done @ 180,000. Bad FPR but quit surging after I installed the six gun . Also bad cluster (oil pressure intermittent dim PRND321, Fuel Gauge light out):( and just recently the CD-player went out so I'm switching out for the 6-changer model.

210,000 miles on mine, the wifes is 212,000. Hers has had injectors once and idler pullies, no mods. Mine has had injectors twice, wheel bearings twice, water pump, and a slue of other items. Both are good trucks!

I'm curious how many hours some of these trucks have on them. My wifes has way less than mine with similar miles.

However did you manage 245k miles between injector replacements? My next modification will be an Air Dog II and I've heard that prolongs injector life. Is that the case here, or just really good luck. At any rate, WAY TO GO!

After posting this thread, I realized I forgot a few things. I don't know at what mileage, but my T-Case was also replaced. Probably the pump rub thing?? I also replaced the passenger window motor, T-Stats, coolant temp sensor, and fan clutch. I think they were all working ok, but just to be sure, I changed them when my truck was getting a little warm pulling 13K up long pulls. I too have the lights in the factory radio out, and both rear door arm rest hangers have broken leaving the panels a little loose. My door handles are starting to crack and I've replaced one already.

Pretty minor things for a truck that runs like a raped ape! :D

302K, Factory injectors at 77K, Transfer case clip at 105K, front brakes and rotors at 174K, Alternator, batteries, Injectors by self at 214K, #8 injector at 265K no warranty coil died, Water pump at 272K, probably had the head gasket leak at 272K but did not know, at 302K a rear tire blew and pushed the rear fender up to the frame, 300 miles later the head gaskets used 2 gal or water every 30 miles. For the past 10 days at 302K it is on jack stands no box and down to the block waiting for the heads to return. For 99% of the 302K that truck pulled a 34 ft. modified horse trailer with living quarters delivering Fort Knox safes. It will rise again. It will not be stock.. it will be better. Oh 8600+hours. Uses 2 qts. Amsoil 3000HD in 18 t0 20K. Oil samples every change prove it gets better with age, until you open the engine.

yo i have a 2002 GMC 3500 dually 6.6 liter duramax Lb7 with the 1000 series 5 speed allison. K&N cold air intake, PPE flasher, 5 inch magna flow exhaust. Timbren bushings to support 5,000 lbs 10 foot boss v- plow. 127,000 miles hard ones too. Snow plowing, hauling, towing skid steer you name it. This truck is invincible simply put. Surprisingly no injector problems. Front diff replaced at 90,000 miles from wear and tear from snow plowing. I pound on this thing but I also take extremely good care of it. Oil changes at 3,000. Fuel filter at 7,500. Grease u joints ball joints the works faithfully. I also have been using T-100 Fuel additive every 100 gallons. Increases fuel mileage , cleans injectors, helps prevent gelling of fuel. I believe its a must since there is no longer added engine lubrication in diesel fuel anymore. I laugh in the face of FORD lovers.

My speedometer is pegged to the right, but with my GPS, I know how fast I am going. Stock everything, no fuel additive added ever, change filters always, so this has been a good truck to me.

Are you running any kind of additive or anything in your fuel?? That seems pretty much unheard of with these trucks..

Every once in a while these trucks go a long time on one set of injectors.

For example, mine needed the first set at 204,373 miles. I'm still running those injectors at 250k, with no signs of failure anytime soon.

I think people whose injectors last a long time don't comment on it that much, because they don't think about it. Honestly, I can't complain about 200k on a set. I hope this set goes 200k too!

Oh, and Eric Merchant: HOLY CRAP! Do you have a photo of that odometer!?!

I think an additive does help the CP3 and FPR. It won't hurt the injectors. With a lift pump and added filtration on top of that, you have done about all you can. Oh and don't do the injector service at the stealership. When I did, 2 months later I had injector problems. Before that, no issues and no balance rates worse than 2. After I had two at 3-4 in drive when hot, which quickly crept up to 6+. They were on the same side, so I think the tech got crap in my system since they messed with it after my 3 filters. If it ain't broke.....

212,000 and still on original injectors. I was told I needed new injectors 30,000 ago but I just ran some cleaner through it and they snapped out of it.
What kind of cleaner did you use(brand, specific product)? And how long did it take effect?

Oh and don't do the injector service at the stealership. When I did, 2 months later I had injector problems. Before that, no issues and no balance rates worse than 2. After I had two at 3-4 in drive when hot, which quickly crept up to 6+. They were on the same side, so I think the tech got crap in my system since they messed with it after my 3 filters. If it ain't broke.....

I feel the same way, but my 7 yrs is coming up in Dec and I would kind of like to know how my injectors are doing. I have never used an additive, so unlike most others on this site, I don't believe they do anything. I haven't a clue how to have the injectors checked and don't trust anyone with the exception of Eric Merchant, but am not driving to Michigan to have them checked. Any suggestions??

To get injectors checked, see if someone around you has EFI live or go to the stealer and have them checked. Balance rates are the end all but a part of the data. What symptoms are you having?

Truck has 260000 miles, 3rd set of injectors, changed at 80000, 160000 and 240000, last set i did myself. Headgaskets at 220000. Also changed transfer case, water pump, some front wheel bearings, driveshaft, and normal front steering and suspension parts. The 2 costliest repairs were the headgaskets and the last set of injectors since it was out of warranty. Currently the front diff and the power steering leak a little oil and the fuel gauge does not work. Overall still runs good.

It sure looks like a lot of these trucks are on their second or third set of injectors. What is the biggest common factor for this kind of failure? Is it Fuel Cavitation? Will the presence of a lift pump extend the life of my injectors?

I'm at 119000. 0 miles on second set of injectors.

Same here, 19 + since new. Just had injectors done at 194,000. Pissed off that GMC won't honor the extended warrantee to cover it. It should be 200,000 FLAT, not 7 years or 200,000 which ever comes first. Just because I had better luck than most, I get penalized. The mechanic who did my injectors said that he never saw a duramax go this far with replacing them.

Bought my truck used used with 35K on it with the only warranty claim being one set of injectors swapped at 32K. It has 112K on it now, my only out of pocket expense has been the front wheel bearing / hub assembly and both battery's. One hub went at 50ishK and the other at 80ishK. There are a couple of electrical gremlins, i.e, AC will not turn on when summoned, but I have found a work around for 80 percent of the time and the bulbs burned out quickley on the steering wheel controls. Minor gripes for an object that does what it does.

It has done everything I expected it to do and then some. It still gets 19 MPG around town and 24 on the HWY, 12 - 15 MPG towing and gets me to work every day. My wife keeps asking when it will be replaced and I keep telling her when it hits 300K.

Why did you replace your instrument cluster? I think mine is going out and was curious what others experience is.

TIA

Greasing the wheel bearings wasn't too tough. You have to remove the calipers from both front wheels. Then, you remove the hall effect sensors in the hubs. Use a grease needle and pump a couple ounces of high temp bearing grease on either side of the reluctor ring. These units tend to go dry over time. Mine still had plenty in both, but I wanted to make sure since I had read about all kinds of horror stories relating to the wheel bearings drying out over time. I was doing my regularly scheduled axle greasing on my flatbed trailer, so I figured why not? :)

Not to be a stickler, but the wheel speed sensors are variable-reluctance sensors, not hall effect. :D

Drivers side window motor

Driver side front wheel bearing
All the joints in the front steering linkage and two ball joints just before my warranty was up.

After Warranty was up:
Computer for the Allison (OMG that's not cheap and while I was on my archery elk hunt.)
Mass Air Flow (same deal not cheap and on the way up to scout for turkey hunt. If I didn't have gauges I'd probably have toasted my turbo as it dumped a ton of fuel in there to compensate to try and make power pulling the 5th wheel up the mountains.)

I put Edge EZ and a 4" MBRP exhaust on two weeks after my 75K warranty was up. I very much dislike the noise of the exhaust but love the extra power from the Edge EZ gives me. Front end has been turned up to fit 285's since the day I took it off the lot with 212 miles on the truck, hence the worn out steering parts.

I promised my wife I'd see the truck hit 200K before I ask to get another one. Since I bought a jeep for a daily driver and the truck is only used to pull the 5th wheel and other odd trips... I do not know of any shortcuts being this was my first time to do it.

I always instructed the trainees when I would teach them something new on the Airplane the right way, and then let them learn their own shortcuts if they choose to deviate from tech data....

I know this is not Aircraft maintenance, but as soon as I learn something that may make the job easier I will post it, if it already has NOT been posted.

2002 with 184,000.

100% stock until 164,000 then I put on edge j/a with level 6, air dog 2, ppe stage 5 allison, ported intake horn, aftermarket wheels, etc.

Injectors at 60,000, second set still looking great. balance +/- 1.5 except #4, it's +2.4.

Waterpump at 159,000
Starter at 45,000
Alternator at 30,000
crank seal at 170,000
turbo coolant hose at 170,000
had to weld the aluminum coolant pipe that runs through firewall where the bracket is welded on at 180,000
transfer case at 140,000
been through a few front ends.....they don't last long

I need a new fpr I'm pretty sure.
My fuel level sensor has been out since 90,000 but I have a new one ready to install.

A little more info please?

Like what kind of truck, year, mods, have you had any problems ect......

I just got home from Stone Mountain, GA, only a 550 mile trip, but that puts my truck at 200,700 miles.

Gotta change 2 more injectors on the right side, #1 and #3 then the truck should be good to go for another few miles ;)

Sorry...just joined but haven't done my sig yet.

Stock 2001 LB7 2WD Crew Cab. I'm shooting for a million out of this thing, just a personal quest I guess.

No major rebuilds / repairs other than the typical injectors. First set went at 180,000 and were replaced under warranty. Second set went at 274,000. I have a couple on the way out now...ugh.

I haul an 18' trailer with a Bobcat and attachments all over the place building playgrounds. I put about 95,000 a year on the truck, towing about 12,000 regularly. I live in VA and have worked as far out as KS and LA.

I'm big on maintenance.... Rotella T6 5w-40 every 8,000. Fuel filter every 10,000, etc....

The truck is a BEAST!

In reality, I'm somewhere in the ballpark of 420,000 actual miles on the truck. Around the 50k marker, larger tires were installed. I've never had the speedometer or odometer calibrated to the 285/75/16 tires. I calculate there is about a 7% correction factor.

I'm being robbed man! I wonder if there is a way to update the odometer. :D

I'm now at over 350,000 kms on my lb7. hyper tech for 200,000kms now PPE on 160hp setting. Still have original windshield and I live on a gravel road.(although now it is time for a new one)
All original u joints. I put this truck through hell and back. It has mud bogged, worked in the bush, worked on the farm and done everything I asked of it with no problems, and that is why I will continue to buy duramaxes. If this truck can survive the abuse that it has taken so far my, I know my other d-maxes will last as long as I want them to.

i'm at 275.8k.i'm the second owner.first owner was a land clearer.he has pics on hois phone of it stuck in ditches, just over the rockers going thru water.and bent or ripped out just about everything under the truck.
he did injectors, water pump and the shift module.plus routenely maintained it.
i got it w/ abs lite on,air bag lite on,fog lite wiring ripped out, parking brake cable by axle, driver side ripped off.and rear shock mounte(axle) dangling.
so at 275.8k,i've put 2 transfer cases in(first gm reman failed under warrenty)abs pump motor(fixed lite),fixed brake cable and shock mount.needed 2 thermostats, done and as i was bleeding it,idler pulley bearing let go,fixed that.noticed the aluminum heater line is leaking slightly(on order),oh yeah, both upper arms were unsalvagable, replaced
fuel sender is no good(anybody have one cheap) air bag system has a short per tech 2,need to just figure out lastly why the windows go up and down slowly(figure its a corroroded ground)

but it just got 17.22mpg towing my boat to storage(170miles) in 28deg weather.w/ all its faults i like this beast,i'll never punish it like its first owner(my friend)

What brand are you guys using for control arms (the ones that have replaced them)? Before I would get whatever the local advanced auto had and i have had to replace them every 50-70k miles. I live down 2 miles of dirt road though, i'm sure that shortens the life considerably. This last time I put gm brand on.

Idler and belt tensioner replaced at around 180,000.
Yesterday i replaced both t stats, stuck slightly open.

I have 125,000 miles on these injectors and at idle they still balance +/- 1 with the exception of number 4, which balances at 2.5. They are even closer in drive.

I have 4 new injectors with install kit, going into the right side, if that does not cure the smoke, I will go back into the left side and replace those with the ones I took out of the right side! That will make 5 new ones in the engine....I will get this thing to stop smoking!

They are fun to work on too. Just ordered a set of injectors for my wife's TDI. 100K, its good to have the injectors reset, balanced and re-calibrated. Throwing on a slightly bigger nozzle for economy at the same time and the new nozzles are rated for ULSD too.

Hey Jack,
You buy the tickets, I will bring the tools and we can tackle the JOB!

In another thread a guy was saying if I pull the ing relay, it will not allow the injectors to fire, so pull the glow plugs and crank the truck over and if there are injectors leaking, then a mist can be seen out of the glow plug hole.

That sounds plausable to me! I think I am going to BE REAL CAREFUL and pull my glow plugs and do this test, sounds simple enough!

Do your research before posting. Only the LB7 duramax's ever had a problem with injectors (if you can call it that) They tend to last on average of (130K-175K) mine made it to 197,000 miles on the first set and it was covered under warranty by GM. 20K later i have had no problems with the truck what so ever with the exception of the factory shocks. Adding a lift pump and a better filter can greatly increase the life of the LB7 injectors and they are not that expensive. They are great trucks and get far better MPG then 7.3 and 6.0 powerstrokes.

The MOST talked about problem on this forum is injectors on the LB7.
The second most talked about is the Transfer case pump rub issue.
Water pumps come in alot lower in rankings.

CBR600RX7 was probably just trying to direct you to the search button at the top right side of the page. Alot of folks get on here and start asking questions without searching for it first. Forums are for discussions and helping folks out, but some folks need to help themselves first before asking for handouts.

If a person has a problem with their truck, and come on here for help, if they were to use the search button it would cut down on the number of threads because it has been discussed before.

Don't take it personnal, he may have just been trying to help!

Ya under stood i did search but new information is always coming forth so wanted the most up to date as a '01-03 Dmx is in budget also but not if this series engine is relied on injectors every 90k, kinda defeats the idea of longevity in a diesel application IMO.

my last GM Vortec gasser made it to only 300k with no major repairs,we'll see what happens....thanks.

Mine has 145,000. Previous owner had injectors replaced at 70,xxx and the only problems I have now are I think the transfer case shift motor is bad because it wont shift into 4 low and then the rust that plagues these gm trucks

143,000 on the clock. Rebuilt transfer case (due to pump rub), replaced instrument cluster @ 100k (giving me problems again), both front hub bearings, all 4 shocks, CD part of the radio dosen't work, that's getting replaced with a JVC unit as soon as old man winter gives me a chance!
I LOVE this truck!

99-07.5 models, in the 1500 and 2500 series trucks.

Milage is a gamble, it could happen in as little as 30,000 miles, and some have over 250,000 without problems, it is dependent on driving conditions like stop and go ect. The ones with high milage and without the pump rub are the ones who drive cross country, the intown folks are bitten much earlier!

^ he is right on. And the search thing was not a bash its just that we see this come up a few times a week and if you go to the LB7 section its talked about probably every day. My injectors where replaced at 197,000 for the first time but some people dont make it to 100,000 and then others go 250,000 plus and have no problems. GM offers a 10 year 200,000 mile warranty but you some times have to fight for it depending on the truck. Your best bet if your buying a LB7 is to buy one that just had the injectors replaced or is running a fuel system upgrade like a airdog that filters the fuel more and adds protection and life to the injectors.

My grandfather has a 2002 6.0 vortect 2500 and has now had the transfer case rebuild twice and its not at 100,000 miles yet. :(

Make that 7 years and 200,000 miles under a SPECIAL Policy, not a warranty.

Need injectors ,have installed left and right side wheel bearing assy, Pitman arm and Idiler arms and front alignment. Had big time problems with the P.S lines .I can't
get a new after market hose to last more then a week without leaking!
I still have the original brakes and they only half gone. These pads are great I bought a new front and rear set from Eric Merchant.
Best truck I ever owned and still drives like new.

208,771 and runnin strong! Injectors @ 150k and Injection pump at 205k other than those and fluids/filters, haven't touched the engine or ali(knock on wood)! Now the rest of the truck, that's a different story

I'd like to hear the rest of the story:) I mean what else have you replaced??

It seems these trucks should hold up longer I have an '05 lly 138k.. I've replaced both front bearings, ice picked the 2 and 7 injectors at 120k,now the speedometer is acting up, rear wheel is starting to leak, a/c vents are falling apart.. COME ON what's the deal?? I have been GM mostly my whole life, I don't mind little stuff but at 138k it shouldn't be one thing after the other..

Some days id love to go buy a new 2011 but mine is paid off and i really dont feel like dishing out 60k for a new truck.

Just returned from a trip to Tenn. and THANKS to Jack (Maxindixon) My truck has been EFI Lived, it has my EGR Crap all turned off, and the truck ran like a sewing maching, clicked off Dang near 20MPG with 285's installed.

MAN With over 202K I am loving this truck more and more, and no truck payment makes it all more easy to swallow!

Thanks Jack!

Just shy of 168K now. Only items I've ever had to mess with are transfer case R & R, and both idler pulleys underneath the alternator. I've had this truck since 97K. The injectors are getting a bit out of spec, but the fuel economy is still there, so I haven't changed them yet.
