I recently bought a 06 crew cab off copart, it has 156k miles, under the hood is nasty, n looks like soot.. It's all up top so it's not a manifold gasket.. Could it b the turbo leaking? I have yet to drive it yet, I'd like to fix it b4 it gets painted...

The down pipe from the turbo has a rubber-like connector at the outlet of the turbo that has had some issues with coming off, leaking oily soot and dirtying up the top rear of the engine. I remember reading some posts about updated pipes and clamps that will keep that from happening. My LBZ purchased new in 2007 has just hit 21,000 miles and is pretty clean except for the area around that connector which is starting to get sooty/oily looking.
My guess is that if it were the EGR or exhaust related, you would hear some noise like an exhaust leak coming from under the hood.
With that kind of millage it could be PVC related because of excessive blowby. You might want to have a good diesel tech with experience on DuraMax's check it out.

The truck is wrecked the reason I havnt drove it yet.. I started it n didn't notice any exaust leak.. It is leaking oil out the back somewhere below the heads, but it's deffinetly soot around the turbo and the whole upper part of the motor, I had to wipe off the top of the batteries to c what kind they were lol.. It started fine and idled smooth.. I'll check it out after work, if ya got any more ideas lemme know, if it is egr the cheapest route would b block it right, the truck is going to b a pulling truck any way..

it might be blocked already, check the bolts. mine came loose a month after I put it in and I started to get alittle soot under the hood.

I found the leak... It's coming from the band clamp that holds the hot and cold sides of the turbo together... How do I fix it? Take it apart n clean it?

Anything to watch out for when taking the turbo off? Or is it pretty straight forward?
