Just picked up my heads yesterday. They were surfaced, pressure checked, and had new valve stem seals installed. Shop owner said all cups checked out fine. Should I trust this verdict or pull them out and reseal them anyway?

They didn't have to remove the cups to surface the heads?

then he didnt surface them. they have to come out to be surfaced. if he calls surfacing, cleaning em w/ a 3m pad then i wouldnt trust his judgement on the cups. just my opinion. u dont wanna do the job twice.

It sure looks as if they were surfaced as opposed to just cleaned up.
question: It appears that the cup extends clear through the head to the mounting surface. If the head was surfaced, wouldn't the cup now extend into the combustion chamber +.000x now that the distance from the mounting surface to the top of cup is a bit less? What should the tip of the cup look like. Mine look just like a cut piece of stainless steel tubing with no flare or anything.

Lance,
The guy that did this work didn't know what he was doing.....at least by the sounds of it. It sounds as if the cups were left in and cut off. Are they flush with the surface of the head? They shouldn't be....the cups should extend through by a little. Now that they are cut the injector may not fit correctly, because they probably rolled a burr into the I.D. of the cup. Also the stress of cutting the cups could very well have loosened them.
At the very least you need to pull them and re-seal them. I don't think the fact that they are shorter (if they are) will cause any problems but they need to be removed, inspected, deburred and re-sealed.

Bummer, its odd that the dealer says they use this shop for their head work but then owner seemed a bit "blank" when it came to Dmax's. Perhaps the dealer pulls the cups out prior to taking them to the shop......
I'll pull them since the heads are still in my garage. Should be able to use a brass punch to tap them out? How difficult is it to clean the tapered surface of old Locktite? Anything else to look for while doing this proceedure?

When the cup came out will doing the injectors on the 02 there was no sign of loctite on the cup. As far as I could tell this was the first time anybody had been into it.
