: Allison rebuild questions

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1L / Allison combination and the Allison is rashed. Right now it's "limped" with the CEL lit. I have all 5 gears and reverse available but the ECU is limiting RPMs / acceleration in all gears.

I've had this happen in the past and it was faulty speed sensors and wiring but this time the only code showing is P0700 - Transmission Module Fault. It started doing it this time after I drug the Toy Hauler, weighing roughly 11,000 pounds, up to 9000 feet. In the process the tranny got to 275 or so and stayed there.

Anyway I've about had it with all of these damn transmission issues. Every time I take it out I end up doing SOMETHING to the transmission when I get home. The truck has 190,000 miles on it and the trans must have abused before i got it. You seriously wouldn't believe some of the things that I've found and fixed.

I would like to rebuild it but there's isn't a "known" rebuilder within 200 miles of me (Central Wyoming) so having someone do it would be very inconvient and or risky. I'd like to try it myself but I have a few questions:

- I have the ATSG guide and I'm a fair home mechanic but I have never done a transmission rebuild before. I've taken them in and out but only to take them somewhere else to have it done. Is the ATSG good enough to get me through this?

- What is the ATSG guide NOT telling me that I need to know?

- How can you tell if the Torque Convertor needs to be replaced? Is there some way to measure its output or tell if it's damaged? I'd just put a new one in but they're expensive and I'd rather not if I don't have to.

- What is a good "parts list" for doing this? There are several kits available on the Internet, what's a good one? I'm not planning building this motor, it will stay stock, but the truck is being used to pull a Toy Hauler that weighs between 9,000 and 13,000 pounds depending on how it's loaded.

I know that's a bunch of complicated questions and I appreciate anyone taking the time to help me out. I'm trying to go into this with my eyes open and I'm hoping to benefit from the experience and knowledge that many of you have.

I just looked and you're right. That's an attractive option since a tranny swap is just grunt work, no brain required. :)
