I've got a 2000 cummins, I just replaced the vp44 because I was getting the p0216 dtc and a dead pedal upon acceleration in 4th gear at around 2200 rpm's if I pushed in the clutched and featherd thepedal a few times it would come back. Now with the new pump it accelerates fine but if you decelerate or let off of the pedal and the rpm's get less then 1700 I have dead pedal, the only way to get it to go again is to drop it down a gear, when I drop it down it takes a second and then, just like I flipped a switch or something all the power is there. It's a brand new pump perfect pressure, no way it's bad with less than 1000 miles. please help.

:welcome: Not true. Did you replace the lift pump? If not, that could be the culprite that caused the Vp to fail? The dealer replaced the L/pump and Vp-44 and with in 3 weeks the L/pump started to fail. I've heard stories of these things dead out of the box.
P.S. Fill in your sig so we know what kinda BOMBs (Better Of Modified Baby) you have.

I did replace the lift pump, I belive that was the reason my first vp went out, I also installed a carter pusher pump on the frame rail and got a low fuel press alarm light. I periodicly check my fp with a test quage as well and it is about 12-15psi. Does that sound about right? Also what is the max your pressure you can safely have. Thanks.

Fuel pressure sounds ok. What kinda pressure do you see @ cruise and WOT? I would recommend a gauge in the truck so you can monitor the pressure @ all times. JMHO. As far as max fuel pressure? I'm not sure about that. I see 21psi @ idle, 20psi @ cruise and 16psi @ WOT.

Had the same problem. After replacing lift pumps the vp-44 went south wherein I went and had one rebuilt. Injector guy said the first thing I needed to do was hook up a fuel gauge. So I did and got about a quarter of a mile down the road and the fuel pressure went from 12 psi to 0. Then it went to 8 psi then to 2 and so on and so forth.
I said screw this and went and bought an Air Dog system, runs 16 to 18 psi consistantly. Best $700 I ever spent, unfortunately I sold my Edge comp before the Air Dog was installed and now I'm regretting it.
If I were you I'd order a fuel pressure gauge that mounts in cab so you can constantly monitor the pressure. As with the lift pumps you can use a gauge you just screw into the fitting on the pump and it may show good pressure but as soon as you take off down the road it may be doing like mine and jumping all over the place.

I do need a fuel pressure guage, but I hooked up my test guage and taped it to my windshield, took a short trip down the road 21psi idle, 20crusing and about 15 WOT. It did the same thing it always does the pedal intermitantly won't respond. But I still have good fuel pressure when that happens. Also sometimes in the morning when I start it there is white smoke that consistantly comes out the exhaust, untill I give it some throtle a few times and it clears right up. Got any more ideas?

Have you ever ran any fuel conditioner/cleaner in the truck? How many miles on the truck? Does it idle rough or lope? I wonder if you got a bad/some injectors? Are you getting any codes? What happens if you take of the programmer and set everything back to stock?

diesel cleen about every second tank. 92,000. Idle is smooth. The only code I get is p0216, fuel injection pump timing failure. If I return the vehicle to stock the problem is much worse. It still does the same thing but alot more frequently, with the programmer on it only acts up some when I decelerate in 5th or just barly give it any gas for a few minuts or more. but with it off it does it in 2nd all the way threw accelerating or decelerating.

Hate to say it but if your fuel pressure is still good and your showing an 0216 code your vp44 has gone south again. Happens, tons of stories on TDR about the same thing. Oh yeah, white smoke too is also a sign.

Well at least it is still under warranty. Does anyone know the steps you have to go through to prove to the place I got it that the new pump is bad? I bought it from usdieselparts.com, has anyone ever delt with them?
