: Bug Screen Update

I added a bug screen in front of the radiator (and other coolers) last year, and just completed a 800 mile family camping trip across Wisconson and Illinois with outside air temps running between 95F and 101F. I was pulling our 30' travel trailer that weighs just under 7500 lbs loaded. The screen was great to have. All the bugs (and other debris) were easily cleaned from the front of the radiator. The screen itself had no impact on temp readings. Engine temp always stayed below the first notch under the 210 mark, and transmission always stayed below the first notch under the 200 mark. Our trucks have quite a few coolers stacked in the front end, and after removing the grill one time last year to clean out a load of bugs, I decided to add a screen. For me, it sure makes life a lot easier!

FWIW, I made one that is between the grill and the front of the radiator stack. A couple times a summer, I pop off the grill and brush it off and I'm good to go. I used some pet-grade screen door material. Find it in any hardware store.

I simply bought a piece of stainless screen, and cut it to fit. Pop off the
top plastic plugs, and lift off the schroud over the front of the radiator.
The screen fits in snug between the braces and the radiator, and mine
has been self cleaning. My oil coolers are full of bugs. the same bugs
must hit the screen, but then fall off when the truck is stopped. Don't
know where else they would go. Radiator stays clean, truck has not
overheated and I pull a 12,000 lb fifth wheel during the summer. Made
of stainless, it does not melt like rubberized screen would do.
