I'm curious to know if your oil is black right after an oil change. I have 96,000 miles on my truck and when I change the oil, the new oil is black even before I run the truck.
It was the same thing on my last truck (04 lly) that had 225,000 miles on it.
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm far from being a mechanic.
Thanks for your time.

Mine gets black quick but not before I drive it a few days. If mine was black before I drove it I might change it again, and again.

It's the nature of the beast.......I can change mine today and be black as the night sky tomorrow as if I never changed it.......diesel's have always been like that I think

Same here with my LMM and LBZ, my old LB7 would not get dark for a couple of days.

I can change mine and as soon as I start the truck and let the oil cycle a bit it's black. Happens almost immediately. I also change my oil every 3K miles...my maintenance cycle is very meticulous. It's just the nature of the beast with a diesel.

The black color you are seeing is the soot left behind from your EGR and normal operations. The CJ-4 oils today are so highly engineered to handle the EPA Regs. today that the have high levels of dtergeny built in to suspend the soot and contaminants, in case them, and still lubricate as needed. So if you run an oil and it remains clear, its not doing its job! In a typical analysis, it may be normal to see 10% soot which sounds like nothing, but when you consiseder you may have 3 gals. oilweighing approx 21 lbs, 10% is 2.1 lbs of soot!!!!

Its funny I changed my oil saturday on my 09 DRW (14k miles) and thought the same thing. The oil was black before I even started the motor. I have an 07 classic (75k) and the oil looks nice for a while. I was thinking it was the emmissions crap on the new motor.
