Hey,
Bought a 02 2500HD DMAX 76,000 mi.
When engine is cold, sounds like belt squeaking.
After it warms up and I drive it 10 min or so, sound goes away.
Belt looks good. Put some dressing on it but still makes noise when cold.
Kinda loud sometimes. Drivin me nuts!
Any ideas?
Great site!

Check your belt tensioner. Belts squeak because there is slippage, so either the belt is worn, or your tensioner is weak. When the belt heats up, it gets softer and so it has better grip. That's why it stops after awhile.

Thanks, I'll check the tensioner.
Is this still covered under the 100,000 mi engine warranty by dealer I bought it from?

Per the manual, PM on the belt is 60k. I had the same thing happen around 56k on my '03. I picked up a belt for around $40 and the problem went away.

Unfortunately, neither is covered by 100k mi warranty. Internal powertrain only, unless you have an extended warranty, then check the fine print. Some will, some won't. I would try a new belt first. www.rockauto.com has great prices. $28 for belt(If you want Goodyear Gatorback they don't sell them), $65 for Delco tensioner assy.

My tensioner went out a 8000mi it took 3 weeks to get one from Mexico and now at 32000 it's squeaking again. I do have the extended warranty so we'll see what happens.

Got the same problem on my 01. GM extended my warranty on belt only to 100,000 miles. It looks like dirt or sand is getting imbedding in the belt. Just my thoughts.

I have a 02 and got the same noise with about 12000 miles on it. I took it in and they said that some of the alternators on diesel engines have premature bearing failure which causes the high pitch noise when its cold. GM replaced my alternator and belt. Now at 30000 miles it sometimes does it for a minute or two when its cold.

I checked the tensioner and the line on the pully arm is lined up in the middle of the other 2 lines on the bracket.
Is this enough belt tension?
Mabey I will buy a belt and check. I think it has it's second belt.
Always good to keep a spare in your truck tool box!

Buy a Goodyaer gatorback belt, I had that annoying squeaking when it was cold or when it was wet, now no more squeaks.
Look around on here somewhere I had put a link to goodyear & it had the part#s for the belts, there are a few different #s due to extra generators & size of alternator.
Also autozone carries these belts.
