: Titan tank and fuel gauge problem, anyone else have this?
leros 08-18-2010, 08:29 PM I have a 52 gallon Titan tank on my 08 and it has been great. Starting with a full tank, I have noticed on the last three long trips that I have taken that the gauge goes to "E" and I lose the "range" on my DIC somewhere around 100 to 150 into the trip. Then about 20-30 miles later the gauge starts working again.
When it happened on the first trip I thouht that it was weird, it happened again on the second trip and didn't know what to think, when it happened last weekend I thought that this was way too coincidental! I'm thinking it must be something in the travel of the float at a certain fuel level?
I will check it again this weekend as I'm driving the same 600+ mile trip. I will note what mile marker on the odometer it happens if it happens and when it starts working again.
Has this problem happened to anyone else out there?
I had to tweak mine a little for the float to move free.
I also have EFI Live and changed the setting for 52 gallons. Took a few tries to get the gauge to work right with the volume. Love seeing range of 1000m :D
leros 08-19-2010, 09:50 AM I'm running EFILive also so mine reads properly as well. I'm really dreading the thought of dropping that big ol tank again. It's just weird that it goes to "E", it seems as it it were hanging up that it would get stuck at 3/4, 5/8 or what ever? But to go to "E" makes me think that there is some sort of short after using eight or nine gallons of fuel? Like I say, I'll test it again next weekend to see if it does it again.
Yes you are absolutely right about seeing the 1000 mile range, way better than that little dinky 26 gallon OEM tank!
Quiky One 08-19-2010, 10:22 AM Steve, what is happening is the stock gauge thinks the fuel sending unit isn't working because the tank is so much larger and the float isn't moving as fast as it thinks it should. So to protect the normal idiot driver, it goes to E so they stop and gas up. Once the float starts moving again it goes back to normal use.

And the computer feels that after 8-9 gallons the sending unit should be moving because on the stock tank it does...

If this is correct, am I the only one that this is happening to? I haven't heard of anyone else complaining of this problem.
I just hung up with Titan, at first he thought it was the rheostat on the sender but when I told him I only have 29K on the truck he ruled that out saying that the rheostats start failing around 100K. He has not heard of this problem before.

This is a common problem and has been discussed here many times. The best way to avoid it is to allow the main tank to get down to 1/4 then transfer fuel till it reaches 3/4. That process allows the main tank sender to move which is what the computer is expecting to see. BTW, there does not appear to be any way to change this behavior in the computer based on what I have read here.

He doesn't have a transfer tank so in his case there is no way to avoid it. I bet around town he doesn't have this issue.

Correct and correct, although I haven't noticed a problem around town but what you are saying makes perfect sense.
dslboy 08-19-2010, 04:47 PM sounds like sending unit failure to me. but what do i know only work for gm. if any undue sideways pressure was put on unit while removing from stock tank at what ever angle the sender was at is when the issue will appear.
jettech 08-19-2010, 08:14 PM I've had it happen a couple times with my titan also. Also only when on a long trip and usually only if I leave the engine running when I fill up. Like the other guys said the truck senses there is something wrong and defaults to empty. The couple of times mine did it, it returned to a normal reading after a few minutes by itself. A lot of guys with transfer tanks have the same issue.
leros 08-19-2010, 11:52 PM I'm glad that it's just not me that it's happening to. The more I think about that explanation the more it makes sense.
motovet 08-20-2010, 02:26 AM Happens to me too on longer runs. Also happened on the 02' with the transferflow. I have noticed it happens alot around the same area on a drive I take often.
I had to bend the float wire so it would clear the side of the tank. Your float could be hanging up on the side. I would look at that more.
Mine moves fine all the way from full to empty (well close to empty) but I have a small leak from the filler when I fill up.
Titan know they made the neck to small for the hose but said it was designed that way  It just needs a spacer tube in the hose.
leros 08-22-2010, 01:52 AM Mine does not leak at the hose where it fits on the neck, but you are correct it should have been a larger neck to fit the OEM hose. I don't know how Titan could have made that mistake?
