: Flashers...Surging?

Hmmmmm...I noticed on my trip this past week that when I drive with my emergency flashers on, the motor surges with the flashers. Whenever they illuminate there is a drop in revs and the revs pick back up when the lights blink off. Yeah, it's very annoying to have your vehicle surging while going up a steep grade pulling a 28' trailer. Any ideas on what is causing this dilemna? TIA.

Very odd. Is it that noticable? Do you have that many extra lights on your trailer causing that much load on the alternator? Only with trailer in tow?

Electrical load will affect CTIME as well, but it would have to be a serious load to make it noticeable unless you were looking at a scanner.

Does the truck do the same thing without a trailer? just to try and eliminate trailer wiring.

Check for poor main ground connection on engine to frame, or poor trailer to ground connection, lowered system voltage as a whole causes all sorts of electrical anomalies on these trucks, needing a solid 12V control voltage all times.

Could the emergency flashers be triggering the brake controller and this is turning the trailer brakes off and on?

If brake control is properly connected that should make no difference, Shane I see from post count you are recent addition to the site Welcome; well May 05 isn't that new, take a minute to update your sig per welcome note sticky.

I think you hit it Einstein! Now that you mentioned it, I noticed that the electric trailer brake light comes on with each blink of the flashers. I also noticed that the flashers will flash quickly at first (blink..blink..blink..), then get longer with a few seconds (blink....blink....blink....). I have installed a new flasher and it still does the same thing. I will check the grounds from the motor to the frame and body tomorrow. Since I live on the northern coast of CA, I imagine I will find the grounds a bit corroded. Thanks for all of your input everyone and keep the suggestions coming.

BTW, how did the trailer brakes get wired into the flashers and where do I check to undo the faulty wiring? Thanks again all. You guys :ro) !

I'm going by memory here since it was over a year ago since I wired mine up. The trigger wire goes to the brake switch at the brake pedal arm. The switch has 2 wires. One is live 12 volts wire and the other wire is 12 volts when the pedal is depressed. The controller should be connected to the other wire.

Ya got my small mind confused here Shane...):h

Which wire is the brake controller supposed to be hooked into?

I looked at where the guy before me hooked them up and it's under the dash. He spliced the controller wire into a harness and hooked it up to a white wire. The wires going to the brake pedal are purple, orange, yellow and I can't remember which other color. Which wire is the controller supposed to be hooked into?

For some reason I no longer have trailer brakes when I depress the pedal. I have also lost my flashers. Fuses appear to be good, but you never know. The trailer brakes will work manually when I depress the button. Any ideas? TIA.

Here's a site I found with the wiring for brake controllers. There are others but this may help you.
