: 06 has a different turbo.
McRat 07-22-2005, 12:02 AM As suspected.
Anyone with some inside connections at Garrett who can find out about PN 8980033660 ?
Logic would dictate it's about 15% larger.
braxton357 07-22-2005, 04:45 PM I would also assume it would bolt up to the 04.5-05's...? If it were 15% larger, could be a nice upgrade.
Diesel Tech 07-22-2005, 06:27 PM From what I have been told it's the same basic unit with a few upgrades internally for durability only. Still waiting to here from an engineer that I know to get it straight from the horses mouth though.
Kennedy 07-22-2005, 07:48 PM It is said to run at 30 psi boost and have "increased efficiency" but only time will tell.
There's a few other interesting things/eliminations on the electronic injection end of things too...
McRat 07-22-2005, 07:56 PM According to my info, the ECM is 100% new and incorporates the injection driver electronics.
Diesel Tech 07-22-2005, 08:31 PM The ECM is new and now made by Bosch, no longer a Delphi unit. Since Bosch is now making the ECM they got rid of the EDU so the fuel system no longer cools the EDU. Bosch built it all in one. Also for the Automatic vehicles they use a new TCM from Allison as well. Rumor has it they also installed a lift pump in the fuel system, but I have not confirmed this yet. The increased efficiency of the turbocharger is from better exhaust wing design and clearances. There has been some sticking of the exhaust wings so a upgrade was made in materials and clearances which allowed them to reconfigure the wings as well.
Hmm, is this a good thing? I'm now kind of feeling that my truck is going to be a dinosaur..
DURAtotheMAX 07-22-2005, 11:27 PM I wonder if the new ECM and everything fits onto 2004.5 and 2005 LLY's....it would be too good to be true. Mainly what I want tho is that new TCM!!! New TCM=5 speed Ally turns into 6 speed haha.

McRat 07-22-2005, 11:31 PM All I want is a bolt in bigger VVT turbo. :D We'll see.
GTA23109a 07-23-2005, 04:37 AM Man, no kidding . . . screw the computer, give us the bigger hairdryer. :D
LBZ DMAX 07-23-2005, 04:59 AM Man, no kidding . . . screw the computer, give us the bigger hairdryer. :D
shooooshhhhh.....brrrrrrrrr....shooooooooooooooshh hhhh.....brrrrrr):h ):h ):h
Diesel Tech 07-23-2005, 12:51 PM The wiring for the '06 is different with different connectors so to fit the new ECM and TCM the wire harnesses will at least need to be changed. I am sure there is a lot more that we will learn once the trucks start showing up in the field.
OC_DMAX 07-23-2005, 01:46 PM An individual up the street who works for Garrett in Torrance (engineering) told me at a neighborhood Christmas party last year that the VVT used on the LLY was being upgraded for reliability. They had some problems with the actuator (or sensor) that positions the vanes. They were looking for a different vendor for the part. Also, that GM/Isuzu had increased the EGT spec that the unit must handle for next year (2006). He did not mention the turbo was bigger (not that it isn't, he just did not mention it). Overall he indicated the Garrett turbo used on the LLY had far fewer warranty issues than the one used on the Ford diesel. He indicated the 2004 Ford diesels injectors were failing, dumping fuel into the oil which had a detrimental effect on the turbo (seized bearings). Many warranty claims by Ford Motors, but most were denied by Garrett. He also indicated that Garrett had lost the turbo contract with Ford and that the next version of the Powerstroke was going to use dual impeller arrangement (I forgot the name of the company). This was a loss of a lot of units.
DURAtotheMAX 07-23-2005, 04:42 PM Anyone know what the current EGT spec is for the hot-section of our current LLY turbos??

As for matching a 2006 TCM to a 2005 ECM, its just a matter of getting pin-outs/wiring schematics and then buying a 2006 harness and then marrying the 2006 style plug on the TCM end to the 2005 style plug on the ECM end. Data busses should not have changed so maybe making our Ally's a six speeder wont be as hard as it was first thought. The tricky part would be getting the BCM to accept the "Manumatic" feature with the "+/-" buttons on the shifter...then obviously we'd need a new cluster that was capable of displaying the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6" in the DIC as well as having a PRNDM1 gear selector indicator. How cool would that be. Oooo we get to shift our dmax's like racy cars!!!

Cougar281 07-24-2005, 08:50 PM With programming, the current clusters should be able to display the 1 2 3 4 5 6 in the DIC. Just wouldn't have the M.
DURAtotheMAX 07-24-2005, 10:04 PM So with a 2006 program in our current insturment clusters, the manumatic feature could work? Would we shift into "3" or something to go into Manual mode? Some people have not been very optimistic about the ability to upgrade a 2001-2005 Allison to have the features of a 2006 MW7 Ally. However, I think that once the 2006's really start to come out and someone digs into an MW7, "upgrading" could very well be a reality. Sorry to sort of de-rail this thread everyone!! Now back to that new turbo!
