First off should have not drove because the bug is know planted

Here are a few highlights
· Compared to my LB7 and LLY much, much QUITTIER! I thought mine was quite; these new ones are night and day difference!
· 6 speed very smooth!
· Lots of power...from the seat of the pants...definitely more than 310hp...
· Less turbo lag
· Red line raised to 4800rpm...look at picture...yet when left in 1st gear it would only go to 3500 rpm
· Manual shift...very nice!
· New mirrors...my 2 cents...terrible!
· There is a new cooler on front and is mounted lower. Gets air from the openings in front bumper
· rest of truck interior and exterior all looked the same as 2005
· I heard barely any engine or drive train noise in the cab...that quite.

I am sure it still did have the speed limiter as I didn't try it but I would have loved to...

I am sure they moved the "redline" up since in certain situations with the tow\haul on it would easliy go past the current redline when it down shifted and that threw a red flag up for many. I tried to get it to go that high, left it in first gear and put it to the floor and it would only go to 3500rpm...even mamaul shifting all gears stopped at 3500rpm's

It is a gauge change from what I can tell.

For the first time the sales man that helped me knew a lot about the Duramax engine and knew a lot about the new one. According to him he said this engine is still an LLY and it is a 6.6 liter. But he had also heard the numbers were around 360hp\650tq and it felt like it

Here is what someone emailed me... Me Likey!!!

6.6 L Duramax Diesel engine to be uprated to ~360 hp and ~620 ft lb
torque. In addition, it's supposed to be quieter yet (already the quietest
diesel in the industry).

Allison will indeed be uprated to handle engine increases:

1) 6 Speed Gear Set - Replace 5 speed gear set for greater gear ratio opportunities

2) New helical gear design - reduced gear noise in low and 6th range.

3) Reduced Oil Pump Noise

4) New Range Select Mode - added to column shift lever, allows
driver to use +/- button to manually select desired gear range. Can use
simultaneously with Cruise Control and Tow/Haul modes.

5) Enhance Electronic Controls - More precise, efficient, faster,
smoother, fully automatic shifts. Enhances Grade Braking, Tow/Haul modes
as well as the Adaptive Shift Controls.

6) Heater Performance Mode - In diesel powered truck the Allison
Transmission has a feature to shorten engine and cab warm-up times by
changing, under cold conditions, the part throttle up shift points to increase engine speed.

7) Low Traction Mode - In diesel powered trucks, in low traction conditions when transmission is put in 2nd range while at a stop, the transmission will limit torque to wheels if it senses wheel slip.

8) Cold Operation - Transmission will inhibit certain operations, in very cold conditions, to protect itself against damage. Normal operation will occur when transmission oil reaches proper temperature.

Well we all know a very small amount of programming can buy you 50hp. I'm sure they just re-tuned things a bit to keep things interesting.

I'm not so sure how I feel about these 6 speed autos. Even the 06 C6 is getting a 5 speed auto. I guess GM had some gears left over they needed to get rid of.. :)

While I like the idea of another gear and more power I've never had an overheating problem with my '05 towing or not and $700 will get me more power than a new '06 and probably smoother power. I'll also stick with my power extending mirrors. I was really hoping the mirrors would look great; while they may be slightly more functional they are ugly as hell!

It`s about time GM put some real towing mirrors on these trucks! But I'd bet the TTT mirrors are farther out from the door. I know mine measure about 3" wider then my brother`s superduty when extended. Where they help, is they have a much taller view out near the end.

nice to see gm is changing a few things to help out with all the lly problems, and to have a quieter motor in end result, i like the six speed concept, will make a difference i bet in mileage, from the lower rpm, also like the +- idea for gear seltor, on tow haul, always seen that as an anoyance, also see the tranny cold protection and cab warmup feature to be a real bonus for us living in cold climates, and our mirroros are by far not the cats meow, so a change is in line, also think the bigger tranny cooler will take that problem away, gm looks to be listening to our concerns and that i like to see, also nice to see no bottom end changes to our motors (they must be well built),

i am very happy that i never did buy the lly(04,05), and stayed with the lb7, if the new 06(second gen lly) turns out ok i will be intrested, now if we could just make the power of the lb7 life would be to good

If in fact the engine is rated at 360/620, it suddenly is starting to make sense.

The torque did not go up much, but the HP did. Sounds like they moved up the redline to 3500 and put on a bigger turbo to get the extra power.

JJs DuMax
07-22-2005, 02:17 PM
Ditto McRat's comments! Plus if you tow anything over 30' you can't see behind it! The TTT mirrors provide an additional 2"-3" extension over the OEM RV mirrors, you can see the rear end of the rig using those. They were on my shopping list, though if the 06 mirrors will fit my 04.5 I may just go with those. I like the look. JJ

That new cooler is twice as long as the cooler that is on my 04.5. The cooler on my truck is directly behind the bowtie emblem on the grill and is pretty small. The new one is mounted lower and gets its air from those two big slots right above the license plate area.

Glad to hear (no pun intended) that the noise level is lower. Contrary to what someone posted earlier the Dmax is not the quietest diesel in the industry, every measured sound test I have seen in the last few years pegs it as the loudest. It was easily the quietest on the scene when it came out, by both furd and durge passed us in the whisper competition.

Good to see GM is responding on various fronts to the challenges the other brands have brought!

Oh no please dont tell me GM is ditching the trim level scheme...I like how the top of the line is simply just "LT". Two letters. Simple yet still just somehow have the sound of "top end". I always loved how the GM trim level names were so simple and "utilitarian" I guess...nothing extravagant, the names just got the job done nicely. Adding a stupid "Z" on the end of the CLASSIC "LT" just makes it sound stupid like when all these other car manufacturers feel the need to have something big and annoying like...the "XGV-J5000 EDITION"!!! I read somewhere else, that the new ECU (besides controlling the injectors without an FICM), also has like 5 injections per stroke, not just a pilot and main. This is Bosch/Mercedes diesel technology finally making it to trucks.

Cuts noise, and smoke, which lets them up the fueling.

dmaxhd,

Any chance you can go back to look at the truck, pop the hood and look at the label on the engine? My LB7 and my LLY both have a plate on them, the first said 300hp and the second said 310hp, and if you could tell us what the '06 said maybe we could dispell some of the rumors/questions about hp/tq for '06 trucks. The plaque should be on the passenger side of the engine, sure would appreciate it.

I'll be ordering my 06 next month and it will be my first diesel vehicle. I was concerned about the different LT classifications for the Silverado but up here, north of the 49th, we won't have that problem. It's either the Standard, the LS or the LT.

I like the new camper extending mirrors. They look like an improvement to the existing ones. I have the powered extending camper mirrors on my 03 gasser and they have a lot to be desired, especially on the passenger side.

I am pretty sure what happened is GM got tired of explaining to people that they allow the truck to go into the redline for grade braking. I imagine people had a hard time understanding that the engine is designed to run in the redline because they have been told their engine should never go in the red. So to fix it, they moved up the redline on the tachometer. I would be willing to bet that it still upshifts at the same RPM.

Not to me. The support bars look somewhat level, but what I think really looks strange is how the mirrors definitely look like they are angled upwards on the outer edge. (aka if you drove bedside a wall and scraped it the lower edge would hit before the top would). It might just be the camera angle.....

It looks to me in the picture and the picture I saw at the dealer that the mirrors are shown in the extended out position. The order sheet calls them a camper mirror, with power glass adjustment, heat, and manual extension. I saw a picture (or a computer generated pic - couldn't tell which) of them closed (not extended) and they look better. After 40 years of add on mirrors, clamp on mirrors, junk extended mirrors, and totally inadequate mirrors for towing 102" trailers, this may be the answer. Many of us do not buy trucks for looks, but for the way they work. We leave our trailer queens and parking lot junkies for the real McCoys, as shown below.

Oooo...I think I'm going to go take a look at these when one comes in to the dealer. Well, just a specific dealer, my dad went to school with one of the salesmen. He pretty much lets us do what we want if we go looking.

Besides, I need to one-up pop, being that he bought his nicer truck after me. Hehehe, I'll get even one way or another.

Have a good one!!

Dan

I'm a Dad and guess what, you'll "never" get one up on your Dad!! :D As you get older you'll find this out, ten times over.
I'm sure you'll have fun trying though. ):h

Does anyone know what the gear ratios in the 6 speed Allison will be?

My order form for a 06 showed 3:73 only for the 2500HD and 3:73 std and a 4:11 option for 3500, which shows as a 3500 and not a 3500 HD. No sunroof on 3500, but available on 2500HD. Same steel wheels with 265 on 3500 while 2500HD gets alloy with 245. Same ol, same ol.

So now they will let you get 4:11's with the Dmax?? I guess it makes sense now that the Ally is a 6-speed... is there any difference between a 3500 and 3500HD?? I always thought it was just plain 3500 (no 3500HD). The only 3500HD that I know of was the previous generation (GMT-400 platform). There was the 3500 pickup and then a "3500HD" that had a huge body lift (judging by the extra 3" or so of space below the grille that was filled with a gray plastic piece IIRC). IIRC the old 3500HD's were basically chassis cabs meant to be converted into heavy mason dumps and wreckers or fleet vehicles with custom beds/backs. Also, I think I remember people complaining about them being overrated (in terms of GVW and load capacity) and just...junk. Correct me if im wrong... I do wish Chevy would get some nice wheels for the 3500's tho...c'mon...steel wheels even on an LT??? Even Ford puts..what..nice 18's on their "Harley Davidson Edition"??

Gm may have brought back the 3500HD when they brought back the 1 ton single rear wheeil model! But I'm just guessing. The single rear wheel one ton pickup could be the 3500, while the dual rear wheel truck would be the 3500HD

Take a look at this pic.

That pic does not help any because it does not show the relationship between the side of the truck and the outside side of the mirror. Like I said, it may just be the camera angle....I guess you've actually seen them in person, so you know more about how they look than I do. I hope you are right, because if so I'd like to get some, b/c the ones I have now shake terribly and you can't see anything out of the pass side mirror.

I absolutely abhor the new mirrors.

If I were to go out and buy a new truck (it'd still be a Chevy), but I wouldn't take delivery of it until those mirrors were replaced with something more functional, convenient, and looked a hell of a lot better.

I personally don't have any problems with the current set of mirrors, and I tow around my 31' Cabin Cruiser all the time. Maybe it's because I drove big-trucks for a number of years and am used to the fact that there will always be blind spots (so I pay attention a bit more when towing). Maybe it's because I'm towing a boat instead of a big box-trailer. I can't say, but what I do know is:

I abhor the new mirrors with a passion.

I like the posible # ,s on the truck but those mirrors, look like little lord Fountleroyd,s ears , they make me want to-:t There is no way I would drive around with those appoligetic feets of Censored Censored up enginnering, if thats the best GM can do on a $45.000+ truck thats bad!!!! they look like some aftermarket units from j.c. Whitney for Censored sakes!!!!

If you guys dislike the mirrors, you can always buy the cheap stock ones, then buy after market mirrors.
But I say, it`s about time GM gets some nice real towing mirrors. The last generation so called towing mirrors were 4" narrower then the TTT mirrors, but the outside edge was worthless due to the wide angle mirrors being placed there, so they were really more like 7" less. And 7" is a huge amount.

maybe when the truck isn't so excited, they look better tucked closer to the door.

I just test drove an 06 HD crew cab short bed Dmax/allison and I liked it. I think the mirrors give a more heavy duty look to the truck and putting looks aside they are very practical for someone who will be using the truck for work like me where I will have to back into some strange places. I don't think the truck was really much quieter outside compared to an 05 but the noise inside the cab was cut down.

Dmaxhd, would you be brave enough to remove the airbox assembly and take some pictures of the opening where it draws air from? And a few of the intake side of the box as well? There are a few of us who want to know if we can adapt the 06' cold air intake yours has to our LLY trucks. If not, thats OK too, it is a new rig after all.

Thanks!!

Does it have a Censored speed limiter? If not it should haul a$$ with a 4800rpm redline.):h

It's a guage change, not an increase in the redline!! Don't you read your owners manual about the difference between the slashed redline and the solid redline? It's okay to run in your slashed redline when using the tow mode.

i read my manual... but it stops at the first redline (3200) and doesn't go any higher, i think the manual is referring to when you're using the transmission as a brake, and its slowing down, it's ok, to go to 4800, but you can't drive past 3200 (my 05 wont)

I like those mirrors. They actually work great in the Fords. Never tried it on the 2006s. I may be frustrating to see that Ford had the best mirrors before GM but were only talking about mirrors...the rest of the truck is way better...

The mirrors are very functional. Great visibility when towing. When extended, the whole mirror sticks out beyond an 8' travel trailer. I measured them and when they are not extended they are out as far as a fully extended 01/02 style. I like them.:cool2:

New member....i'm sure i'm the anti crist for owning an 05 dodge....but my dad's looking at the 06 GMC and he's never had a diesel, so i said i'd research them.....my question.....how's the spread on the 6 speed? My 4 speed is only turning 2k at 70 and about 2250 at 80 (with 3.73 and 265's)....does the allison have an especially low first gear, close ratio's? Just seems like with 2 extra gears there would be a much bigger spread......thanks for any responses...

Hey,

I love those mirrors!! They are way more functional that those skimpy ass small things offered on thrucks of the past!! The give a much better viewing range than any of the old ones did, and they are not bolted to the truck doors like the old west coast ones are!! No rusting or stress on the door shell!!

Just my 2 cents.

Taake care,

JoshH
10-16-2005, 01:56 PM
The 6 speed is the same as the 5 speed except for the 6th gear is an extra overdrive (.60 I think). I turn right at 2k rpm @ 80 with the stock 245's and 3.73 gears. I have the LLY so I can't say how the LBZ performs, but if they are better than mine they will be very strong stock. I just got back from the track and ran a 15.83@83.51 in the 1/4 with a stock truck weighing about 6900#'s.

The new duramax lbz started production on september 26th. all previous 06's had the lly with a few updates. the new lbz specs are 360hp @ 3200rpm and 650 ft lb's of torque @ 1600 rpm. I had an 04.5 with the lly and just traded it in on a new 06 with the lbz. The new truck has noticeably more power and is quieter. The new mirrors I didnt like at first, but have grown to love them. The manual shift mode works like a charm for towing. Great improvements, A+.:) Go buy one!!
