: GMC dealer says it is the injectors, Chevy says no

My truck had never puffed any smoke EVER. Now my truck is smoking bad, has poor fuel economy and power and is shifting really weird all of a sudden. Basically everytime I hit the gas it blows smoke, especilly when towing. It hesitates to shift now and does not downshift on hills anymore. No codes though. Balance rates, rail pressures are fine.

I took it to GMC first(they said injectors) and then had to take it to a chevy dealer because they can't cross-warranty special policies as of a month ago.

Now the new chevy dealer is saying that the smoking is an acceptable level and I should just wait for the injectors to go out completely before they replace them.

It took me 6 hours on hold and 17 calls before I got a rental car for this. They said no 16 times and then said yes to the rental. Should I keep up the pressure on them to fix the smoking/shifting? What should I do?

I also have the gmpp 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty.

Thanks

Sounds kinda like you are not getting enough air.

I think it needs to be properly and thoroghly (sp) diagnosed. As for the smoke, have them compare it to another truck. Take them for a ride and show them what it does etc.

Thanks, I think you might be right. Maybe a turbo or mass air flow sensor issue. The dealer I bought the truck from put in a gasser air filter and the fins were partially collapsed for about 7k miles. They replaced the air filter with the right one and it is still smoking.

I did take the tech for a ride, but without codes, or injector inbalances or fuel pressure issues, he says that he cannot do anything. He saw the smoke today. The other service manager took the truck home last night and saw the smoke too. They are both saying that it is an acceptable level of smoke for a diesel. When I am towing and floor it it smokes like a big rig. My friend has an lly and my dad has a lb7 and I have never ever seen any smoke from their vehicle.

Another question is what color is the smoke, black, white or blue?

Good luck with it!!

Black smoke, sometimes white/gray when at idle in 110 degree heat or more.

The dealer finally gave in after taking their techs for a ride a few times.
Just got the call all 8 injectors special policy. I have the old injectors so I am way stoked to get the new re-designed ones.:ro)

Black smoke under load, or flooring it is normal. White smoke is not, if it smokes at idle, like mine did, it could be injectors. They just need to check the thing out right and find out. Have them run balance rates etc, I had my GMC work done at my local Chevy dealership, it has the only diesel Mechanic I trust around here. Not a problem!

PS,, They new injectors are not re-designed, there the same, It was a real bummer to hear that, but it is indeed the case. Still they took care of it, need to contact GM and let them know they need to extend the Special Warranty to the 03's and 04's, like I did. No reason we should not get the same treatment as the 01' and 02 owners since its basically the same engine and injectors.

Stock the thing shouldnt smoke. You may be able to get it to puff......maybe....MAYBE but it will take work.

Check out this thread I started. The tech actually gave some good info on what was done by bosch to redesign the new injectors.

I think you are 100% correct. For the first 7k miles, not one puff of smoke even towing my boat in 118 degree heat. The next time I towed in that heat the shifting was all out of whack and if I hit the gas it would smoke worse than a big rig- tons of black/brown smoke. I also saw white smoke when it was at idle in that heat. It took two dealers, two weeks and fifty phone calls to get a rental car and injectors. The special policy voided my bumper to bumper warranty- that was the reason they put up a fight with the rental car. Next time I have an issue, I am parking the truck on the side of the road, having them tow it and getting a rental immediately.

Do not ever let the dealer tell you no. Do not ever tell the dealer that you had ANY mods, especially a oil/gauze filter or they will void your warranty.

The cross dealership (gmc to chevy) service on the special policy warranties policy went into effect about a month ago (according to GM).:badidea:

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what is the "official" word on rental car policy for the powertrain warranty. I had mine in for an axle seal a month ago and the dealer said no to a loaner-but it was just one day and they gave me a ride. Thus I didn't argue, much. But for something like injectors that are going to be a multi-day affair, I wonder if there is a policy or it is just dealer by dealer.

Good to know, yet I have to say my GM Mechanic said they are still the same, but it possible he might not be aware of this, sure hope this is the case, I Love this truck, and really looking to not have to change so soon.

It turned out to be a good thing and the second dealer is being cool. Now that I am having all 8 changed under the special policy, I am getting the redesigned ones and I now have a 200k warranty on them instead of the 100k warranty for the 03-05s.

I love driving my truck and miss it though, it has been two weeks...

Rental Car - On my extended 100K warranty (GM naturally) one gets a free loaner if the repair is over night. Not sure if the 36K gives you a loaner for the day, I've never gotten one, just a ride home. The 36K may also give you a loaner if over a day, however never looked at paper work as opossed to 100K which does say such in black and white.

When we were having the oil sensor replaced at 200 miles, they provided a rental car. We lived in Georgia, and had bought the truck in Alabama though. We were under the 36K warranty when they had our truck for 2 weeks as well. They provided a rental the whole time. We were in Arizona, on a move. Here, they provided a rental truck when they kept ours over night to fix the power steering and brakes. Of course, I brought a book and spent the day there, since we were told it would only be a few hours.

All of this has been under the 36K warranty, which states they if your truck will be in the shop overnight, they will provide a rental. They offered me just a ride home, but that left me with no way to get the truck the next day, as ST's company was going into the field. I was NOT going to pay for a cab, since they had said it would be done in one day. Their "shuttles" refuse to go on post.

Censored Sounds like BS... It's like having one tire go flat and the tire company saying "wait till all the other tires go flat and then we'll replace them for you." Cross-warranty mumbo jumbo... just another way to put the customer off.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this type of runaround... but with GM under heavy fire from a financial and product performance perspective, the little guys out here like us don't have much of a fighting chance.
 I admit I'm ranting... but I hate being squeezed by the GM corporate machine!
