hi guys well im thinking about straight piping this, and this truck dont have no cat in the exhaust just the muffler, so im wondering if anybody knows by taking the muffler out, would i hear the turbo better? i love the sound of that thing lol, and would it get much louder? does anybody have a truck around the same year that could post a vid on how it sounds, and would there be any "drone" in the cab or would it be really loud? also the truck is a 6.5l

you won't really hear the turbo better unless you change the intake to a more open filter design.
6.5 turbo's sound good straight piped, not real loud, very mellow

My 95 6.5 it straight piped. I used the factory pipe from my 03 Duramax and adapted the hangers and down pipe flange.
It sounds great! The bigger the pipe the better it will sound. The only thing that is important is that the tip extends out far enough past the body line. When I first installed my exhaust, the tip was just under the rear quarter panel. It was very loud in the cab as the sound resonated under the box. I added a tip and it solved my problem!

ok thanks for the info guys, yeah this truck has a k&n air filter in it, today im gonna try something i seen on the site todo with a snorkel, if there is 1, but yeah Wellgeo03 if you dont mind to record the sound off your 95, thatd be great just so i have a idea, lol, this isnt fully my truck so i gotta have some leverage to show it is better to have the muffler off, or atleast hopefuly

I've got a '96 that I just put a 6.2 in. Everything in it is pretty much stock 6.5, except the 6.2 long block. I've got the exhaust temporarily installed until I can get a 4" Right now its got about a 4' straight pipe. I'll take a video and post it so you can have some idea what to expect. Even with the very short pipe exiting under the truck, I don't find the noise to be excessive. I'd compare it to a 454 with a flowmaster. You do get a slight turbo whistle, but not much.

ok yeah, that'd be great if you would, maybe do something where in the cab for a moment while hitting the gas, and something on the outside for noise on it idle and hitting gas

Tried to get a vid, but it was so windy it distorted the sound. I've got one of me and my boy playing in a mud puddle... Its taken from inside with the windows up.

I, too have been thinking about doing this. I did it on my 03 Duramax and it sounded really nice, but all the YouTube vids I've seen showing straight-piped 6.5's make them sound annoyingly loud out the back end...

They do pep up the turbo whistle though

Yeah, don't know what happened there.... not a computer guy.

If it don't leak oil, ain't much I can do with it!

I've had some obnoxious straight pipe vehicles before. This truck, even with only 4' of pipe, is not what I would call loud. My 6.2 CUCV is much louder! I think its a pretty good sound, thinking about doing something similar to my '94 actually... wish the videos had captured the sound well.

yeah, thanks just the hard part for me if fitting a pipe or something when taking the muffler out because the 1 pipe is higher then the other, and i dont know much or what to use when it comes to exhausts that way lol, maybe theres some sorta flexible extension thing you can buy that will extend over the 2 pipes?

yeah. Parts stores carry flex pipe. You can check around locally for that and a pair of clamps, or ask a muffler shop if they can bend up a section of pipe for you. When I cut the muffler off my '03, I actually bought a replacement pipe pre-bent from a shop online... don't know if they carried stuff for the C/K series though.

I've had my local shop bend me several pieces for very little $ That might be your best bet.

The reason my pipe is so short is because the last owner mangled the pipe from muffler back while feeding cattle. They sawzalled the exhaust off. When I took the motor out I just cut the soot filter out and stuck the two pipes back together and welded them. One fits in the other, at least close enough to weld... the end result is a 4' pipe....

ok if you guys had to say a price for a bend or a straight pipe install how much? im in canada, ive never done anything around this so im not sure, lol im looking for the cheapest possible fix to try with, if i like it then all consider getting a proper pipe in kinda thing,

Cheapest way to go about it is to go the Flex Pipe route... usually a few bucks per foot at a parts store, plus a couple bucks each for clamps

the pre-bent pipe I ordered cost around $50 US plus shipping

I had my 03 Duramax straight piped with the factory pipe. I too loved the sound of it, but it was LOUD! Eventually the noise level 'cool' along with the drone on the highway wore off and I put a Magnaflow system on t. Similar sound, just about as loud at WOT and civil at idle and hiway speeds.

The 6.5 is nothing like the Dmax. Not nearly as loud through the RPM range and no real drone to speak of.
It just sounds deep and throaty. It is loud, but not overly excessive.

This is coming from a guy who loves mud tires but won't run them because the drone on the highway drives me crazy.

lol, so no real drone in the cab your saying then in th 6.5 or atleast in the model of truck i have, if i put straight on it, also do you just take a grinder and put a cut disc on it and just cut the muffler out?

I used a Milwaukee Sawzall with a metal blade, cutting an inch or two outside the pipe in case I needed to put it back on.

alright well all look into the flexable exhaust n stuff and see how that is, for now i think all dig into my pocket for a boostgauge then try the straight pipe, thanks for the info guys, will post back in here if need more info or what not :)

I have a 96 straight piped and its louder than stock, but very mellow. The muffler is useless, all the sound is muffled by the cat. When I removed the cat, my first reaction was the sound was the same. I realized later I could hear the exhaust along barricades and fences, but just driving around you can barely tell. It helped bottom end performance greatly. The cat was probably 30% blocked from soot buildup.

yeah this truck doesnt have a cat in it at all lol
