: Short Throw Shifter
Does anyone know if there is another Short Throw Shifter for the GM ZF-6 besides the BD Diesel Short Shift Kit?
JC Whitney has the ZF-6 BD kit for $399.95

$400 -:t
A lot of bling.
$150 would be more like it.
Thanks in advance,
jc
duramaxedout 08-01-2005, 03:08 PM I have been waiting for some else to come up with a kit, $400 for a little piece of billet???...WTF!! If we could get our hands on one we might be able to mfg one. This would be a nice complement to our clutch kits!!
duramaxedout 08-01-2005, 03:12 PM Found one at www.o-f-i.com not sure if it is the BD kit or not.
2001-2004 SHORT SHIFT KIT DURAMAX W/ ZFS6-650 TRANSMISSION 1031070 $361.00
partsguy662 08-01-2005, 03:18 PM dmaxedout....get Wade to stop sniffing glue some night and have him look into making these. ):h that would be a dandy addition to a new clutch kit!
duramaxedout 08-01-2005, 03:30 PM I will as I get him to come down from the clouds of NO2 fumes from the 11sec QM passes...and after his head fits through the garage door!
Deadeye 08-02-2005, 02:22 PM I don't see how those "short" shifters will be much better since all they do is reduce the length of the shifter and you would have to sit on the floor or bend forward to be able to reach it. I don't yet see any change in the shifter which bolts to the top of the tranny. jc64, that link doesn't look any different than the stock part (what am I missing?)
DmaxCC6spd 08-03-2005, 12:25 PM Deadeye, most of these shifters relocate the pivot point to achieve a shorter throw. That's been my experience with various car shifters I have installed. A shorter stick would obviously be too hard to reach.
Deadeye 08-03-2005, 12:40 PM so, the block is to move the pivot point up so the lower part of the throw shaft is longer. OK. if I understand correctly, seems this is pretty simple for a $400 cost . . . .
It also eliminates the rubber coupler connection from the shifter to the transmission for a direct connection (metal to metal). One drawback is, transmission noise is transmitted through the shifter. I'll take some noise over missing shifts when getting on it hard (and hitting gears 20% faster):h ). My shifter has more play in it than I would like. I would like to feel the gates a lot better.
A choice of shifter styles would be nice too.
True, $350 - $400 just seems a bit much for what it actually is.
duramaxedout 08-04-2005, 02:08 AM I agree jc...it would be great to bang the gears faster and not miss that damm 3 to 4 shift! From what I hear it reduces the shift distance in all the down position gears 3 and 5 so if you ever have any one in middle seat you won't hit them while shifting. I agree with your point, $400 is too much!
I have an all aluminum shift handle that is the same as stock except it has a Hurst tee handle on it. What I like is you feel the gates and can even speed shift 1st to 2nd. The bad thing is the noise, especially pulling a load. I've even installed some rubber washers on top of a steel flat washer to help dampen it. I just got back from a trip pulling my trailer and the rattling drove even me crazy. Don't laugh but I had replaced the aluminum one with a 13" piece of 1 1/2" nylon round stock. I have 4 kids and when the baby seat is in front I can't hit 4th gear. (Yes I have an airbag switch) It was just a bit short and after 2 weeks of driving bent over I was done. I got back last night and switched back to the stock one to see how it drove. What a relief on the noise.
I'll put the aluminum one back on sooner or later because I like the Hurst tee better but I need a break.
$400 is too much. This isn't a car trans. I just don't see the need for it. I would go for about a 16" to 18" long aluminum one to hit the gates better. Mine is a bit too tall but we had the bend in it before I realized it and can't shorten it.
ps it's an M16 x 1.5 thread.
Deadeye 08-08-2005, 07:36 PM It also eliminates the rubber coupler connection from the shifter to the transmission for a direct connection (metal to metal). . .
mine is an '02 and I have had the tranny out several times. . . rubber connector? not on mine. There is a rubber shield between the trannny and the bottom of the cab and there is a rubber cover over the shifter "hole" and around the shifter. however there is no rubber between the shifter cup inside the tranny all the way up to the top of the "hand shaker" except for the grip. Please explain??
The shifter is a steel tube. The end you screw on has an aluminum plug encased in a soft rubber sleeve pressed into the steel tube. Going to a solid shifter eliminates the soft feeling allowing you to feel the gates better but it rattles.
Got Juice? 08-09-2005, 03:14 AM I would give Jesse a call at Pro Finish Whiplash.
He makes them for the Dodges.... I am certain he could do the same for the DMX
Deadeye,
I posted this Jan`05,

I went to the dealer to ask them to look at this and they did. They said, as you would expect, oh...that's normal. He also told me about the rubber bushing. He thought that's what was giving the strange feel, and that everything was fine.
(RANT on) They must learn to say "Oh...That's Normal" on the first day of tech training. (RANT off)

Jeli,
Yes, the T handles are nice. I had put a Hurst T handle on the stock shifter on my 1983 Z28 with a 5 speed. Man did that help. The extra weight of the T handle shure helped hitting the gears harder, but got HOT in the sun. I had a shop towel that I put over it when parked in the summer.
Do you think that a solid steel (like the old Hurst floor mount 3 speed shifters) would transmit noise like the aluminum shifter? I know that it would be a lot heavier, but would it be quieter?

Got Juice?,
How much are the Dodge kits going for?

My salesman said that my truck may be the only`05 DMax/ZF-6 that they sold. So I'm wondering how many ZF-6's that they have worked on or even driven? Can't wait till my cluch goes out. See how long that will take and how many problems I will have after.
I have driven manual transmissions since 1979 (sport car's and HD truck's) and this has the worst shifter feel of them all, but I'll never give up grinding the gears:D .

Got Juice? 08-10-2005, 01:45 AM I can't remember what the CTD kits are....
