: First oil change
Hi guys, I am new to the site just having bought an 05 crew 4x4.
I did a lot of searching and reading here and found most change there
oil and filter around 1K for the first time. I went to my dealer at 1250
miles yesterday wanting the oil and filter changed, the service manager
made a fuss about changing the oil that soon telling me that it is bad
for a diesel and will wash down the cylinders and effect the ring seal!
I could see if I was changing to synthetic or a different oil but
not the standard GM oil? Am I missing something or is the manager
missinformed? Thank You.
nsracer 07-21-2005, 12:51 PM Run away - better yet, just do it yourself. It's cheaper and you have the satisfaction of working on your own truck!
jermstyle 07-21-2005, 02:05 PM I changed my oil the first time at 2000 miles.. It was very black and waterish... Needed to be changed.
partsguy662 07-21-2005, 02:11 PM wash the cylinders down?
there are plenty of members that changed their oil 2 or 3 times before they got to 1000 miles just to get all of the "break-in garbage" out of the engine..
If you have a place to do it, change it yourself...it isn't a bad job at all, once you get the oil filter loose....

The filter on my 05 wasn't hard at all to remove. I used a filter wrench but it still wasnt bad.
precision37 07-21-2005, 03:36 PM Buy a drain valve(Fumoto, Fram Sure Drain, etc.)before you change the oil. You'll be glad that you did next oil change.
scguy2500 07-21-2005, 08:58 PM I took mine in to the dealer and they didn't change it. The service guy told me that I should wait until about 3,000 miles before changing it and that he saved me some money. He said that it has rotella in it from the factory and it ain't cheap. I told I know how much rotella costs , I run it in the tractors. I went around the corner to parts and came home and changed it myself with 1700 miles on it. The oil was black. The filter I got was what they call for, but it's a little smaller than the one from the factory and my oil pressure seems to run a little higher. I'm glad I did it myself and it was quick and easy.

the gorilla that usually puts the oil filters on must have called in sick the day they put your truck together...:D
bearsfolks 07-21-2005, 09:18 PM My Duramax has 4500 miles on it. The oil is nearly the same color as when new. The D.I.C. says the oil is 52%. My dealer will change oil and filter free every 4000 miles. What's the fuss all about? The truck has used no oil and is averaging about 17 MPG combined driving.
scguy2500 07-21-2005, 09:18 PM I had to pull on it, don't get me wrong. I'm a pretty big boy. The plug was pretty tight, the filter wasn't too bad.
zach01 07-22-2005, 02:45 PM I change mine with reg. oil every 5000 and It looks very clean at 5000. These guys sending there oil to the lab and pay over 1.50 a qt are funny.
They must realy belive there truck going to last longer and run better. My Duramax has 4500 miles on it. The oil is nearly the same color as when new. The D.I.C. says the oil is 52%. txguppy 07-22-2005, 04:30 PM I sure hope your "regular oil" meets the API CI-4 of CH-4 specifications. If not your are in a world full of doo doo. Also, $1.50/qt is pretty cheap for our spec. oil.
zach01 07-22-2005, 09:30 PM yes it meets and I wait for the sale and buy a case.I sure hope your "regular oil" meets the API CI-4 of CH-4 specifications. If not your are in a world full of doo doo. Also, $1.50/qt is pretty cheap for our spec. oil.

Sounds like you're a brilliant & well-educated tribologist. I look forward to seeing your future posts.
coyotekid 07-23-2005, 02:40 AM I'm with deadfurrow. Knowledge is power, man! Ignorance is bliss...
It's true we sometimes get waaaaaaaaay too anal about our trucks, but pulling the old "shadetree mechanic" approach isn't a real safe bet in my opinion, either.
And while I'm ranting: The color of the oil, especially in diesels, has absolutely no bearing on the true condition/lubricating quality of the oil. Diesel oils are designed to suspend soot, so they naturally turn BLACK immediately.
zach 01: You do what works for you, but I'm gonna keep doing what works for me. And yes, I do think that knowing how my engine is wearing and taking the steps necessary to reduce that wear are going to make the engine last longer. I'd be willing to bet that the program I'm using with very expensive synthetics and long drain intervals is actually cheaper and less time-consuming in the long run than your 5,000 mile drains with cheap (but not necessarily poor quality by any means) dino oils.
Happy dieseling...
lilwes278 07-23-2005, 07:20 AM I got the same crap yesterday at my stealer regarding an oil change at 1200 miles. There were 2 guys working the service desk. The one that was helping me was cool, but the other guy started raising his voice saying "You're like the 5th person that's come in here wanting an unnecessary oil change! You don't need an oil change until 5,000 miles!". I told him the reason I wanted it was to remove any material that was inside the motor, tranny, and diffs from the assembly process, and to top off the fluid levels that are notoriously low from the factory. He started saying that was BS and that I was wasting my time and money. I simply reminded him that this was my truck, and that he should worry more about when to change the oil in his pickup. I also asked him why he was working the service desk if he was such a great mechanic. That made him shut up real quick.
N2SC4R 07-23-2005, 12:41 PM I have about 750 miles on my 05 Crew Cab and am planning on changing my oil today, and was wondering what oil comes in it from the factory? My dealer didn't know, another member in this thread mentioned Shell Rotella. If someone knows for sure, let me know.
Thanks
Chris
Kendall69 07-23-2005, 01:54 PM From the factory? looks like all the coffee, from all the coffe breaks on the production line, certainly does not look or feel like oil.

I don't know for sure, but it has been said before that it's Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40.
N2SC4R 07-24-2005, 11:20 AM Thanks deadfurrow, I appreciate it.
