Where are you guys getting the LUX amps? What can I expect to pay? How hard is the install?

Thanks
Lynn

1. eBay
2. 150-200 (just depends)
3. not that hard (remember, you also need the right radio with the right amp)

you might get it cheaper on e-bay but you run the risk of having the STEALER jambing it up on programing, or you can buy new and take the worry factor out of it, remember this is not a cheap side street white van up grade the amp and head unit must be programed to match , alot of people on this site and others have had issues with used equipment. try jpcustom.com or specmo.com

We need to specify that the radio/amps shouldn't be REPROGRAMMED....that they just need the VIN numbers changed. That makes a huge difference.....ala Minn-kota's troubles.

If looking for a used amp....look in boneyards for it. They usually don't know the difference between premium and lux. Use www.car-part.com to search your state for one. Thats how I found mine for $100 w/microphone. If you want new, you can check http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ the 15114454 amp is $320.74 from there.

I think what we need is for someone who successfully put USED items in their truck to post EXACTLY the procedure their tech used to make it work right.

I know Ben posted a while back about the rough procedure to just change the VIN in the radio and not reprogram. I think it was in the original Bose thread, I'll have to look.

BUT!!! I also have (had) an H2 unit that I got for my dad's Tahoe when I converted it to LUX (I have since installed the nav for him). I had to get the H2 unit unlocked inside the Tahoe and it worked fine (I am fortunate to have a great dealer who did exactly what I told him; "DONT reprogram it, JUST unlock it please!!!"). Then, for kicks, before I put the nav in my Silverado, I put the H2 unit in and had them unlock it...worked fine. There is a difference between a simple VIN relearn and a full-blown radio reprogram. Yes, reprogramming the radio DOES clear the VIN, but it also mucks around with the LUX programming. So your dealer probly didnt know that you could do a simple VIN relearn without redoing the whole darn thing. (From what it seems, your dealer has never done a VIN relearn before!!! It doesnt have to be as complicated as he made it!!)

The procedure goes something like this:

1. At the Main Menu screen, select: Diagnostics.

2. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options:

■ Model Year
■ LD Trk, MPV, Incomplete

3. At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body

4. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following:

■ Appropriate model
■ Appropriate Air Conditioning
■ Navigation Radio

5. At the Body Screen, select: Navigation Radio.

6. At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions.

7. At the Special Functions screen, select: VIN Relearn.

8. At the VIN Relearn screen, the scan tool will display "Do you want to clear radio theft information?"

9. To begin clearing, press the soft touch key on the top right of the scan tool. The scan tool will display "Clearing Radio Theft in Progress."

10. Press EXIT on the scan tool and cycle the ignition.

Thats of-course for the Nav radio, but you just sub in the UC6 whereever it says "nav radio" I dont think it matters whether its Chevy or GMC...I dont think GM would have bothered to make it that complicated. Remember, Chevy's are really GMC's with a "Chevy Conversion Package" (RPO code X88). Look for it in your glovebox!! Its kinda funny.

The more I read about guys running into this sort of trouble (not actual problems, just a Tech II in the hands of someone who doesnt know what they are doing!) the more I want to buy a Tech II myself and start a little "programming buisness"!

You can get them from early-03 H2's (only), 03-up Escalades (both truck and SUV) and 03-up Denalis (Sierra, Yukon). The visual difference between a premium and lux amp is pretty distinctive...you can't screw that up. The pic is of the LUX amp. The premium amp is more of a rectangle, with fins all over it. The part numbers are in smshiver's DYI thread, the first link. The removal/install instructs are there too. They are very well written, easy to follow.

As for price....well, since this mod got started, amp prices are going thru the roof. You used to get them for $50. The last two I bid on ended up well over $250. As I said before....look in your "newer" boneyards, or at http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/.

I have yet to hear of anyone purchasing a NEW lux amp and having it programmed successfully. The amp does not require reprogramming once it has been removed from the donor. Many people who have had a working system with the lux amp and then had the dealer try to reprogram it for their body style have had the system become inoperable.

When I did my conversion I bought a NEW nav unit from model electronics (when they were <$1400) and a lux amp from ebay. My system started right up with NO need for a tech2.

My suspicion is that these systems configure themselves on startup at the factory.

Good luck,
Mike

Here's a pic of the PREMIUM amp....you can see the obvious differences.

Newbie question, how do you know if you have a Lux or Prem amp in your vehicle without taking stuff apart?

Depend on the vehicle....you have a PREM amp by the looks of your sig.

Thanks, I'll have to look into getting a Luz amp if it will make the stereo sound better.

From what I've gathered from reading ALL these lux amp threads is that all Silverado's and Sierra's with Bose stereos, with the exception of the Denali, have the premium Bose amps.

If you look on the option sticker in the glovebox, a truck with the LUX Bose system will have Y91 in the codes. So, while perusing the boneyards in search of an amp..make sure you check there first.

Ben...I'm going out tomorrow to that yard....I'll let you know what I find!!!

Also, check the "auto EQ" settings...if modes like "spacious" "driver" "passenger" and "rear" are avalible, you are looking at a lux amp! Also, Lux amps have a "midrange" adjustment in addition to the bass and treble. Sounds great, Tom, I really appreciate it!!! Thanks again.
