: 12 Quarts After Deep Pan Swap

Had my mechanic install the deep pan kit today. I gave them 3 gallons of Amsoil TorqueDrive. From everything I have read, the transmission requires 10.4 quarts with the deep pan (or standard by Allison terms) for refill. I even downloaded their service bulletin. The mechanic, whom I do trust, said it took 12 quarts to bring it back to full at warm on the dipstick.

Is this normal? Am I running 1.6 quarts high? If so, what side effects will this have?

Thanks

I believe your tech is correct. The Ally holds 12.5 quarts or so stock. When we drain fluid we never know how much we get out as some transmissions give up more than others. There is no set rule as to how much exactly you need to refill. Make sure your fluid level is not at the top full mark hot.

Can you explain this, Mike?

I've been running mine right at the full mark when checking it hot.

Same here and I haven't done anything to it since the upgrade.

Not to speak for Mike, but I have found they are more likely to push fluid out the vent when run hard when the level is at the top of hot. I try to get them right at the bottom of Hot when filling.

Eric...............for clarification, the bottom of hot when filling, checked cold or hot? Thanks.

Checked hot. Or at a normal temp level(like close to 150-200 or so) when you really flog it if you have it set to the top of the fill mark and get it over 200* it may then puke on ya;) And easy way of getting a wee bit of fluid out is to just not pre fill the filter when you change it;) You wont lose much but a small amount.

Thanks, but why at the bottom of the of mark?

And Ratlover, are you saying that the tranny will puke? Or just lose some fluid. Thanks.

Checked it to day, tranny temp gauge read 150. Engine idling, in park, fluid in the lower 1/3rd of the hot range. I put about 20 miles on the truck since the fluid change so I'll call this full.:-)
