OK I just came off a trip and was towing a 3600lb Ultralight 5th wheel and at a max speed of 70MPH I got 300kms out of 70L of fuel!!! (at my calcuations thats 10MPG US)
I had a headwind on the way down and a tailwind on the return trip. My pyro (pre turbo) was reading 900-1000F,(once or twice I saw it at 700F) I had anywhere between 5-7psi of boost, and the tranny temp never went over 210 mostly 200 degrees. Max engine temp was 100C but I could hear the fan cutting in and out. Also I did have the AC on as well. BTW I did not have a power problem, truck seems to haul a$$ nicely Up hills I can hit 1300F with little effort
I think this is horrible mileage, I read a post about thoughts on mileage improvements and it seems as an improved (opened)exhaust is the biggest mileage improver. I was thinking of replacing my injectors, or at least having them tested. But it seems as the general opinion is that this will not get me the results I'm looking for. Also will this "Optic Bump" also improve my mileage? ( I guess I'll have to read up more on this)

ANY hints to improve mileage will be welcomed with an open tank!

What size tires are you running? Taller tires will give your truck a little more leg and usually improves fuel economy in diesels.

I'm surprised your getting EGT's up that high, you still have stock PCM and exhaust?

Drop your vehicle speed and I think you will show better economy. 10 ain't that bad for what you are doing.

I have 265 tires and a stock exhaust. I would say my average speed was closer to 110KPH with a top speed being 120KPH about 90k(of the 300K) of the trip was at speeds slower than 80kph. The 5th wheel is a low profile design, and compared to others I've seen mine only is about 18inches higher than the roof of my truck.
I too was surprised about the high EGT, and would back pedal to lower it, then ease back on the gas. I fiqured I drove modestly and was not tromping on the throttle at all, If i wanted to pass someone I'd just ease on the throttle a little and move into the pass lane, (it was a 4lane hi-way) and take my time overtaking slower moving traffic.
Still I've been dissappointed with the mileage since I got this truck, and the whole reason I got it was to haul a 5th wheel across Canada to get to Nova Scotia. I'm going to have to do some serious improvements if I hope to make it across Canada, without burning more fuel than a Boeing 747.

Thanks

I agree, mileage may not be that bad for that pull. Driving habbits have a big effect on mileage. If you drive like miss daisy, I think you'll see better numbers.

I disagree. The mileage seems a bit harsh. I get way better with my dually hauling 7000#'s. My friend has a K2500 with 373's and 3"straight pipe and he is getting 18 with his 8' camper and a 2 place trailer with his 4-wheeler and drag sled on it. Jusdging by your mileage, I'd be tempted to say it is injector time. Also, open up that exhaust and get a good clean airfilter in there and make sure the snorkle is gone out of the fender behind the airbox. Optic bump may also help. I had starting issues after my IP was changed and did the bump and it seemed to make it alot better. I would think you should be getting around 14 pulling that trailer. And like the others have said, driving habits make a world of difference! Not just speed either, if you run all day long at 60 mph but are constantly on and off the throttle (like my wife) your mileage will suffer. Don't tell her I said that.
