: Edge Evo Race CTS turbo brake intermittant
calkrog 08-09-2010, 11:00 AM so I've had my LMM for about a year and had planned a long trip in the mountains towing my 6500lb holiday trailer and figured i would like to have the turbo braking as we have an 07 dodge at my work and the engine brake is great on that truck. i figured the lmm would behave the same way once it was reprogrammed, but not so much. the dodge really slows down and you can clearly hear that it is braking. i find that my lmm does slow down, but not as effectively as the dodge, and it does not work all the time. it appears that the engine brake will not work while the dpf is in regen mode, which lately is around every 80 miles while towing. has anyone else had any issues with this ?
and on another note, i would have thought when running empty on level 3 that i would have some tire smoking power, but not so much. the dodge lights up the dually's right off the line, and it is stock. i dont want to go any higher tunes on my truck as it is stock otherwise and i do not want to cook my tranny.
i am kinda dissapointed, and am wondering if i should have gotten a dodge ?
megaboz 08-09-2010, 03:41 PM I have a tuner, but currently am running stock and always have, but I know when I mash the throttle from a stop, it doesn't "hammer down", I am going to assume the same thing even running a tune. I've heard/read that it does this (at stock anyway) for almost everyone. I do know if I build up the boost before I let go of the brake it feels like the rearend is coming out of it with the torque.
As for regen shutting down the engine brake, don't know, but a buddy of mine with the CTS Race complains about the egine braking compared to his old EVO.
Cwylie 08-11-2010, 01:53 PM Have not used mine much. I will have to pay attention next time.
D/AChris 08-11-2010, 02:08 PM The Edge Race Evo and Race CTS have the same exact tuning, just different package. I assume you had the truck in T/H mode, easiest thing to check! It won't work otherwise without it, only works in level 2 only as well. I can roast my 295 MT's easily, from a stand still. Do you build any boost or just floor it? Truck will definitely perform better with a little boost built up. I will say this, my turbo brake would display 99 or 100% vane position when activated on an update I had from July of 2009. Now with the update I got from June of 2010, it will only go to 95%, no higher, and doesn't seem to "work" as much as before? Not sure if anything changed in the tuning, but it was noticeable after the update. I also blocked the EGR at the same time I updated the EVO Race tuner. Chris
calkrog 08-15-2010, 06:42 PM i am in t/h mode, level 2. i can see on the display that the vane position goes to 100%, and it does help slow me down. i am also monitoring the sootmass, and when it reached somewhere around 40 grams, its starts going down again. and that is when it seems to not want to use the turbo brake. it sits at 0% vane position. at first i thought my throttle was not returning all the way up so i would try to pull up on it to get the turbo brake to work. the more i noticed the times it was not working the more it seemed it was when i was in regen mode. which happens a lot.
i have never tried brake standing, or building boost prior to launching, but just flooring it off the line i had expected more.
i am just dissapointed in both the performance, and the turbo brake compared to a stock dodge. should the turbo brake not have the same effect ? is it not the exact same thing dodge does ? the dodge will roast the dually's just by flooring it off the line, no need to build boost or anything.
megaboz 08-15-2010, 11:41 PM I don't know much about the Dodges, but you are not really comparing Apples and Apples, there many factors, gear ratio, tire tread, tire life, weight, etc. If you are talking about the new dodges, I believe they are using a real exhaust brake compared to using the EDGE that only uses the Turbo to slow it down, two completely different items. Roasting the tires from a stop doesn't prove anything other than you got more power than you can use or money to burn!
And during regens I would imagine that the "Turbo Brake" may not function as there is a more important job that needs to be performed. Call or email to their tech department, they will get you an answer quickly, or check the EDGE sponsor link and send a PM to one of the guys from EDGE.
I know you can roast the tires on the LMM, but it doesn't do it by simply standing on the "GO" pedal from a dead stop, I'm not sure if it is a safety feature to keep people from inadvertantly roasting the tires or abusing the transmission, but from what I have read, it is pretty much common that the LMM's don't fry the tires off the line without help like building the boost before a launch. Personaly I am glad it does not fry the tires everytime I mash it to the floor, otherwise I wouldn't have any tires left.
Prairie Ville 08-16-2010, 01:09 AM A REGEN EVERY 80 MILES.....:spank:
You got more problems than just a turbo brake....my .02$
DieselTahoe 08-16-2010, 01:07 PM Im pretty sure that the duramax uses a torque management system that does not allow full torque of idle to protect the allison transmission. Its just something to look into.
