I have a 2001 GMC Duramax that I am currently having towing problems with. I have had the truck since it was new and have kept the maintenace clean and by the book. It currently has 156,000 miles on it.
My problem occurs only when I pull my boat which is approximaley 3500 lbs, the engine will stall and not run over 2000 RPM. I can Drive approximatley 50-75 miles before this condition occurs. I have pulled off the road, placed the truck in park and the engine sounds like it runs fine, however it will not run over 2000 RPM'S. At that point I just shut the engine down, wait for a short period of time and then restart the engine. and I can immediatley run the engine over 2000 RPM'S . Now I can drive it for another 50 -75 miles and it will repeat the same process.
I did have the High Pressure Fuel Rail Sensor/Regulater replaced just recently and the the truck seemed fine, however the first time I tried towing my boat the same thing started happening again.
Has anybody had simular problems?
Suggestions?

Thanks :)

Injectors or possibly CP3. Any codes when it does this? How long has it been since you changed your fuel filter, that would be the first thing to check.

mine was doing the same but never occurred to me to pull off the road and shut it off for a few minutes... about a month later I had my failure (lots of fuel in to the oil pan) and eneded up replacing the injectors and pump, the mechanic said it was only the injectors, but sice mine did not smoked bad nor never had had fuel in the oil untill then, I was skeptical about it and told him to replace the pump too, in the long run saving mony on labor, since everything was taken apart he intalled the pump w/o changing labor...

First thing is change your fuel filter and report back.

The Fuel filter was changed recently,
I decided to bring it in for service and was told that there is a injector leaking, the cost for repair is approx $2800.00, 14hrs + injector and gaskets.
I guess I am concerned about the amount of time I am being charged for, I do not have any idea about the labor involved in this.
Being a service plumber I am quite aware of how things appear simple and can turn out to be the complete oppisite.
Does this seem like a reasonable amount of time to change one injector?
I could really use some advise here.
thanks

14 Hours is in line with how long it should take to do all 8 injectors.

Is a GM dealer giving you that price?

How many miles are on your injectors?

If the injectors have over 75K on them I would highly recommend doing all 8 injectors at once because you would only have a few more hours of labor, and you would not have to be back in there for another 100,000 miles. - Once one injector goes, they all are on there way out, in most cases.

Many guys do just the 4 on one side if only one injector is bad, because it only takes 20 more minutes to do the 4 while you are in there.

Either option would be fine if you have the money, and it will save you money in the long run, but it is up to you.

If I were in your shoes, I would change the injectors yourself if you have the time. - You can get all the parts for less than $1,500 and do all 8 injectors in about 2 days/15-20 hours for a first timer.

Here is a good write up on how to do the job, and you can get a feel of how hard it is/if it is something you think you could tackle.

I have had all 8 of mine replaced and the book calls for 8.5 hours.

^^^ Is that 8.5 Hours for one Injector, or all 8?

Mine were changed at my local dealer. Took the truck in at 7am in the morning and had it back by about 3pm on the same day. All 8 were changed and a new fuel filter installed at no charge to me.

That is the cost for replacing just one injector.

Well after several battles with GM And the Dealership that I had it in for service. My duramax is back on the road.:)

I was able to convince the dealer and GM that the injectors should be covered under a warranty.
All eight injectors were replace at absolutley no cost, they didn't even charge me for the oil change.

Thanks to those who offered some good advise that I recieved here.:)

Heading off to the lake for a week.

Thanks Again

How did you convince them to cover your injectors under warranty? That is amassing since your truck is an 01
