: 06 with a 6 speed alli
goodrnch 07-20-2005, 03:23 PM Just thought I would send a quick note and let people know that we just got our first 06 d/max tuuck in and it has the 6 speed allison in it and the shifter is just as described earlier, it has a drive range or a M range, and from there, you can push a button and select 1 through 6 gears. Also the other big noticable differance under the hood is a completely different air filter and air box design, engine fan has changed as has fan shroud.
Oilbrnr 07-20-2005, 04:10 PM Is that airbox intake open to the engine compartment, or has it been ducted to a cooler source?
goodrnch 07-20-2005, 05:27 PM I cannot see any openings to engine comp. It looks like it is sealed to inner fender and poss another opening on bottom.
Max Power 07-20-2005, 05:32 PM Good pictures would be nice!
I thought it was rumoured that GM wasn't going to do the 6 speed until January (same as they did the LLY). Apparantly that information was wrong. It's nice to see GM step things up a notch!
DURAtotheMAX 07-20-2005, 06:30 PM ahhhh I want that tranny!!! haha just got my truck at the end of May and now hes already a dinosaur:rolleyes: . Its not even the 6-gears I care about...but that Manu-matic "+/-" feature is TOO cool!!

dmaxalliTech 07-21-2005, 07:04 PM Hmmm, I see extra sensors that will have to be removed to put that A5K in there.....
Nice pics, this the the ONLY thing I miss from the dealer, getting to see all this new techy stuff first hand early on..
I still aint going back though!
The last batch

partsguy662 07-21-2005, 07:13 PM Holy Chit!! Real mirrors!
yeah.real UGLY mirrors :(
but, I guess if they are usefull, that's a step in the right direction
NODMAX 07-21-2005, 07:16 PM Looks like the mirrors I had on my SuperDuty. Mirrors that were useful. Still ain't goin' back.:D
killerbee 07-21-2005, 07:30 PM Anyone know if that is an electro-viscous fan?????
Cold air???
silvermax 07-21-2005, 07:56 PM Looks like I will be trading sooner than I thought after all... How many did this dealer have?
Can we get some more pics of the truck?
Got Juice? 07-21-2005, 08:45 PM After looking at the Heatsink on the new computer, and the other sensors that will fail I'll keep my old skool LB7 for a while.
AWESOME to look at though, but i do wonder when we will actually see some processing power under the hood rather than castrated risc processors and flash eeproms in series.
If that were to happen though, Real Time Data Aquisition (IE Chip Detection) et al would be there in spades. The minute you added or changed anything without GM's permission.. you would be toast (I am my own warranty station time) . Unless that is already in the 06 ECM's????
i like the tranny options, but will stick with my TTT mirrors. looks like GM bought stock in CIPA, and squared off the towing mirrors. too bad the engineers have not seen the TTTs
silvermax 07-21-2005, 10:23 PM I wonder why they dont give us a larger rim other than the 16"?
McRat 07-21-2005, 11:49 PM As some of you might have already figured out, the turbo is a different P/N.
goodrnch 07-22-2005, 01:02 AM Silvermax, what other pics would you want to see? All body is the same as is the interior. The only changes that I can see is under the hood. Except of coarse the 6 speed and the mirriors. Let me know what else you would like to see. Kelly
goodrnch 07-22-2005, 01:06 AM Kat, thanks so much for posting the pics, I am not smart enough to drive this camera and the computer at the same time. I think I will stick to driving the truck!!!!

:welcome2: Glad I could help

Weren't they supposed to raise the boost and lower the compression of the new motor?
McRat 07-22-2005, 11:06 AM Of interest will be the 8th digit of the VIN, and the engine code in the glove box. Is it really LBZ?
motojay 07-22-2005, 11:32 AM 8th digit on the 06 I saw was a 2.
I did not look at the glove box.
Jay
Can you start out in 2nd or 3rd gear with this trans?
McRat 07-22-2005, 12:07 PM Weren't they supposed to raise the boost and lower the compression of the new motor?
Not sure if that was a van or the pickup engine.
But it will be interesting if a bigger VVT is available now. If it is 10% bigger, that means we will be capable of over 500rwhp with existing tunes in the LLY, and lower towing EGT's.
killerbee 07-23-2005, 12:31 PM Please someone tell me if they test one out. Does the fan click on if you push the ac button. I am drooling for this fan and intake.
big truck big power 07-24-2005, 11:30 PM I wonder if you could start out in3rd or 4th and lag the motor and throw a big cloud of soot
Redaddiction 07-25-2005, 12:17 AM Does anyone know the gear ratios of this tranny vs. the 5 speed ?
OCDUNE 07-25-2005, 04:39 AM Does anyone know the gear ratios of this tranny vs. the 5 speed ?
Same first 5 gears with an additional overdrive
Machinator 07-25-2005, 07:56 AM Second overdrive is about 0.61.
dozerboy 07-25-2005, 07:56 PM I wonder if you could start out in3rd or 4th and lag the motor and throw a big cloud of soot
That would be cool, but that's really hard on the ring and pinion.

Dozerboy,
How does that put a strain on the ring & pinion?
and....
What's so cool about a big cloud of soot?
DEWFPO
ob_1jr 07-26-2005, 02:39 AM I don't see how that could be hard on the ring and pinion.....but throwing a big soot cloud at some idiot next to you is pretty cool. I did it to someone that thought they wanted to race since they stayed in my blindspot and would not let me over. Needless to say, they had their window open. I just wish my truck threw the deep black stuff. I wish I could get the new 06 out for that 6 speed allison, but I am happy with my 04 LB7.
dozerboy 07-26-2005, 08:11 PM I have heard of ring and pinions go from guys starting out in to high of gear. Why I don't know, but that's what I have heard from a few mechanics from anything from big rigs to pickups.
Brayden 07-26-2005, 11:43 PM Well I'd say that you're post isn't very informative, nor is it whoring.
As for the ring and pinion, starting out in 3rd or 4th, if it were possible won't hurt anything anyways, because you'd be on the convertor. Big rigs generally don't like starting off in high gears because of the GVW. We start out in 5th on the lo axle in our rigs all day long when empty.
Mike L. 07-27-2005, 12:38 PM Brayden
I don't think your post was very informative. You are comparing apples to oranges. Taking off in 5th on the low axle is a lot different than trying to do it in a Duramax. Doing so in a Duramax will overheat the converter and is not good for anything else. Second gear take off in our trucks would be great for a lot of things but any higher would not be good .
mike
dozerboy 07-27-2005, 08:05 PM Thanks for the info Mike, so is there any truth to what I heard about the ring and pinions?
The Original Diesel 07-28-2005, 03:10 PM Thanks for the info Mike, so is there any truth to what I heard about the ring and pinions?
No. Load is load and the r&p has no idea what is going on in front of it..........nor does it care.
Brayden 07-28-2005, 07:56 PM Mike, I wasn't comparing.. I was finished talking about the 1000 series, and had moved on to talking about larger trucks. I know that 5th in a big rig isn't the same as 5th in our LCT's.. Don't think that you're the only Allison Guy here..
Yes you are correct on the heat issue. But I don't think that the second gear start was ever a good thing or ever will be. In my opinion all it does is help keep people that can't drive from slipping and sliding all over. The LLY's don't have enough bottom end to pull 1st gear well enough anyways, let alone trying to pull second (stock). And then there's the fact that C1 probably wouldn't like the added stress.
sdprocomp 08-03-2005, 01:25 PM Can some one please tell me what the 1st 5 gear ratio's are on the alli?
Machinator 08-03-2005, 02:55 PM Ask and you shall receive:
1st-3.10:1
2nd 1.81:1
3rd 1.41:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.71:1
6th 0.61:1
Timberwolf530 08-03-2005, 02:55 PM I like the new mirrors. Could those be retrofitted on older trucks?
shuffman 08-04-2005, 02:04 PM I like the new mirrors. Could those be retrofitted on older trucks?
I went to our local Chevy to ask that very same question and the parts boss looked it up on the puter and told me that the doors and associated hardware are the same from 01-06 model years on the Chevy 2500HD series but those new mirrors were not in our sustem up here in the great white north and I was told to check back in a month when the '06s start to roll into the lot. I am gonna order a set for my '02................SWH...
