Picked up my new 2005, 3500, 4x4, Duramax, Allison, DRW, LT, sunroof, dvd last week:D . I traded my 2000, 3500, 4x4, SRW, 7.4 liter gas. This is my first diesel and it sure is a big difference from my gas truck. It feels much more powerful than my gas truck. I just found your website today and it is quite informative.

Should I be expecting my new truck to start overheating? I see there is a move to begin a class action lawsuit regarding this overheating problem. Is there a problem or is this just a handful of owners modifying their trucks and abusing their vehicles by running them to hard?

I will be ocassionally (once a quarter) pulling no more than 5000 to 6000 pounds on trips of 100 to 150 miles round trip over gently rolling highways for the forseeable future. Should I change fluids at the frequency the owners manual states or should I change more frequently? How about filter change intervals. Should I buy diesel fuel only at truckstops to get better quality fuel?

I'm very excited about my new truck:D but somewhat concerned about this overheating issue:( .

Thanks

Don't worry about it. I just picked up the same truck.

I just put 4k in the back and drove up a steep grade in 116 - 123 ambient temps ( the worst on the planet) and did the mountain pass at 80mph. Sure the temp climbed, but look at the conditions. I di dit for that reason, I wanted to see what it would do, and it passed everything on the road, and there were dozens of cars and trucks on the side of the highway with problems.
And when I backed off, temps went to normal.

Scottdiesel,
While the overheat threads are interesting (and loooooong) I have hauled my 4200 lb camper in +100 temps. Including the "sisters" at +95 degrees on I-80 in Wyoming with a 40mph headwind. Yea I backed off to 55 but not for lack of power or overheating, but that is a lot of load on the camper and tie downs. The "sisters" at +95 w/o a wind was no sweat at 65, sure the fan cycled but that is what I would expect. I think the EGT (my only mod) was running about 1100, but I am not sure, I just rememer thinking it is under 1300 and my engine temp gauge is 220 or less.

To each his own but hauling a camper or towing a heavy trailer over 75 mph is a risk I don't take, and not because of an overheat concern.

Moral of the story, just use the truck for what it is made for and see what happens, my money is on "everything will be fine", especially considering your load.

Enjoy your new ride.

My truck only has 2000 miles on it, 1600 towing the toyhauler around 15K. The truck has been nothing short of great, I even towed through the mountain passes between NC and Tenn with no problems. I love the engine braking and the Allison. I averaged 9.8 mpg for the entire towing trip.

Previous truck was 3500 with 454 with every mod short of a supercharger. The new truck beats it hands down.

Enjoy the new ride.

I would still keep an eye on the air flow issues that the "over heating" crew is working on. JJ was reporting an unanticipated improvement in MPH while towing/testing some of his recent mods. If we can minimize the on time of the HP robbing fan that may help all of us even if we don't tow real heavy or real hot. :)

I just returned from a trip to Cooperstown, NY. Round trip was 690 miles. 75% of the time on interstates 88 and 81, the rest was 2 lane state hwy's in NY, PA and MD. Lots of ups and downs at some pretty good grades. I averaged 16.7 mpg, 2 passengers, and about 500 lbs of stuff. Not towing. Outside temps varied from 54 in NY to 96 in MD. I was running between 55 and 80 on the interstates and 35 to 60 on the 2 lane hwys. I am very happy with the mpg compared to my 2000 K3500 crew cab, 4x4, 454 at 9.5 mpg. I have 2400 miles on the truck at this point. I will be getting 2nd oil change this week. No problems with the Duramax at all. Very enjoyable drive.

Scottdiesel where are you located in MD? I'm north of Baltimore. It's good to see someone else from MD.

Congrats on the new truck!:ro)

I am also the proud new owner of a Chevy Silverado CC Dually. The maiden voyage after 500 Mi. was a camping trip about 250 Mi. one way. No problems.

I love the truck, the power and the confidence you have hauling a heavey load. You can even stop it if you need to.

I have been watching this site for some time and it is a good place to learn and be amused!

I just need to know how to join the Club and get a T-shirt.
