About 8 months ago I put a rebuilt IP in my truck. Around a month ago when the hot weather started, after a long drive the truck wouldn't start after sitting for a half hour or so until pouring a cup or so of water on the PMD area.
Brought it back figuring I still had warranty from the rebuilder Censored ya right.

Anyhow he puts on a tensioner, and a lift pump( which was only 3 months old). Next same thing . Then he says the head and rotor will fix it Censored same thing.

The engine doesn't run good when it is hot still, sort of like when you have a bad wire on a gas motor. 600 bucks later and nothing fixed -:t
The truck doenn't sdtall or give any huge amounts of black smoke but seems to be a little down on power and can still hear the tubo , no codes setting.

This is a great place for diesel owners and spend hours going thru it:ro)

Thanks
Chris

Who did you get the pump from?

Hard start hot in a DS pump is VERY rarely caused by a bad Head&Rotor anyway. Most commonly its either the fuel solenoid, weak transfer pump, or excessive return fuel.

Rovan? No wonder. Just kidding, I think all fuel shops pretty much trash eachother, atleast the ones that are competing for business. I've heard good and bad about Rovan.

Atleast it wasn't Taylor, I've SEEN the work they do.

Bring it by the shop sometime Dishfixer.

How's the cranking speed?

cranking speed is fine i don't think if it was a cranking speed issue that pouring water on the pump would make it start??

Like TDG said, seems a little odd for a DS4 pump to see this problem (not that it doesn't exsist) Wouldn't they usually barf out a code or something before getting this way? Just trying to eliminate all possibilites first.

When he put the "NEW" (I kinda doubt its really new) head in, did they rebuild the whole pump? Or did they atleast tell you they did?

You might take it to a different shop (like my place) and have it tested and verify that the head was replaced and that it was rebuilt properly.

I was there the day they put the head and rotor in , but am not sure if it was new parts or not. They replaced the FSO and flow tested my pump before and after the new head and rotor and that was all.

Wouldn't the computer pickup on a head/rotor issue and puke a code or not, there TDG?

I don't have a SES light on , but haven't had it scanned lately.

Nope. You could crank and crank all day, not pump a drop and the ECM wouldn't have a clue.

Its funny that this thread is still here because today I actually encountered a VERY rare case of a DS head that would not crank. I did a Test as Recieved on it at the customers request.

Everything ran pretty well until I went to do my cranking draw. Nothing, not even a drip at cranking speed. Pulled the pump apart and the Poppet valve and its seat were washed out like I had never seen before and I had to replace the whole head&rotor.

So it does happen, but replacing the head, even with a good used one, should have fixed it if it were the problem, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

The last few days the temps have been in the mid to low 30's (Celcius)and haven't had any hard starts, but it still doesn't run like it used to . Except for no starting issues the truck still seems to run rough after warming up.
