started with bad fuel being put in unknown to me, drove about ten miles started by cruise shutting off on its own. Within next couple of miles noticed a small shutter or surge, then acted like it was running out of fuel. stopped and changed fuel filter(it looked like muddy water) added twenty gal of fresh fuel. problem still continued, when i returned home the truck began stalling with no notice. i can start it drive various mileages with no problem, plenty of power, seems to be a lot of black smoke, next thing you know, no power, no smoke, truck shuts off. opened t handle for drain got nasty fuel out of it, start truck idles fine for various times then shutoff without any stumble just dies, very very extended crank and thats if it will even restart. looking for help this is a daily driver, and i dont have the money to replace parts it doesnt need to run, thank you. by the way this is a 1998 2500 4x4 with 165,000 miles on it, 6.5 4L80 tranny.

Had something similar happen to me. Tore a hole in my tank and replaced it with a tank from my donor truck. I didn't think about it, but the crap that was in the bottom of that tank was pretty nasty I guess. I had to take the tank back off, drain and clean it, purge the fuel lines, take the fuel bowl off and clean it, and replace the filter. Not a big $ fix, just a pain. I would get on it though before you cause any damage to IP or injectors with crud in the fuel...

I would think the bad fuel you have has water/dirt in it. Putting new fuel in without removing all the old fuel will not solve the problem. Water is heavier than diesel and will settle at the bottom of the tank, and get sucked in first. Open the T valve and let it pump some fuel into a clear jar. Put the jar on a flat surface and let it sit 5 mins, see if there is a clear fluid at the bottom. If there is any fluid other than diesel, even a little, you will want to pump at least 5 gallons into a jug, replace the filter, and top up with fresh diesel. The best solution would be to drop the tank, get rid of all the fuel, clean the tank, and put it back together.

You need to drain the cruds through the t-valve very good by jumping the LP.

Change the fuel filter.

Probably drop down the tank and clean the fuel tank sock.

I agree with the possibility of PMD but it can also clogged tank sock due to the crud and clogged fuel filter are more likely. This may cause the PMD goes bad since fuel are not flowing good.

ok now i have new problem discovered, my battery is draining like no other, in a very short time span, dont know if this has anything to do with the other problems.

recently had to change out the cable from the starter to the battery on my truck due to high resistance. The cable got hot while cranking and acted as if the batteries were all but dead.
With the new cable she spins over like new.(it should batteries and starter were replaced about 500 miles ago).
also since the alternator charges the passenger side battery and the crossover cable carries the charge to the drivers side battery where all ecm power comes from, you might find that the crossover cable is bad and not charging the drivers side battery.
with a weak drivers side battery a number of drivability issues like no start and seemingly bad pmd can occur.

With your 96 isn't the alt on the pass side? On my 94 the alt is on the drivers side. Since the later vehicles have the alt on the pass side and directly charge the pass side battery does this mean the drivers side alt directly charges the drivers battery?

I did say that my alternator was on the passenger side and I made an incorrect general statement that probably read as though all alternators were on the passengers side.
as far as your vehicle goes handcannon I am not exactly sure, but you could check by following the heavy wire from the rear of the alternator and see where it connects to the batterys in your vehicles.
yours could have a possable cranking problem if the crossover cable is restricting the charge to your passenger side battery, that depends of course on which side the alternator charges directly.
The problem I'm trying to note is if there is any trouble with the crossover cable the battery opposite the alternator can be affected.
sorry for any confusion.

There wasn't any confusion, you were clear on your post. I already knew the early alts were drivers side and later were pass side. I just haven't paid any attention to the wiring. I was being lazy since you were already online.

Thanks for the quick reply.
