1997 6.5L... For the last little while I havnt been able to hear the usualy turbo wine and im getting tones of black smoke when its reved and when im towing. I took off the intake housing and the turbo is spinning fine. Apparently the waste gate and computer have recently been fixed.
What do you guys think it is? waste gate staying open? turbo bad? I dont know, so i figured I would ask the pros. Thanks Guys

I'm having the same problem. I even wired the wastegate. Still belches black when I step on it. I wonder if it's an exhaust leak

I would start off by checking your wastegate actuator vacuum lines, wastegate solenoid and vacuum pump. Pull the line that goes to the actuator and apply vacuum, it should pull the rod up and hold it there. check all your lines for cracks or where anything has chafed through. Pull the line that goes into the solenoid from the pump and check vacuum (should be about 25-27 inches of vacuum) Then plug that line back in and pull the other one going into the solenoid, it should read about 15 inches. Any of these are possible. When i got my truck I replaced the lines, pump and solenoid (yes they were all bad lol) and now it works great. A exhaust leak is a possibility but if you dont hear one then one of those above things would be the culprit. Did you get any more info about what exactly was "fixed" before?

Doing a home made TM mod is the best thing I've done to my 6.5's. Delete the Vac pump, put a manual spring to run the turbo, install a boost guage and no more worries!
