I'm about to pull the trigger on some tires, have it narrowed down to 6 brands!:rolleyes: 3 of the choices have E rated tires, 3195lbs, but only have 65psi max. Others are 3195lbs, 3750lbs, each E rated with 80 psi.

ProComp Xtreme AT's, 305/65R17's 3195lbs, E, ???max psi (probably 65)
Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 2's, 285/70R17 3195lbs, E, 80 max psi
Hankook ATM's, 285/70R17, 3750lbs, E, 80psi
BFGoodrich AT's, 285/70R17, 3195lbs, E, 65psi
Nitto Terra Grappler, 285/70R17, 3750lbs, E, 80psi
Mickey Thompson, 305/65R17, 3195lbs, E, 65psi

I tow a 12-13Klb 5th wheel depending on how I load it, just wanting to make sure all these tires would work. Not sure if I should be concerned with the E rated tires with only 65psi max capacity or not??? Thanks, Chris

I have the Mickey Thompson ATZ in the size you mentioned and i like them. They did inflate the rears to 80 psi and i am going to look at mine and see what the max is.

I'd appreciate it, pretty sure the 305/65R17 is rated for just 65psi according to the website. Place I usually buy tires locally can get the all the tires I listed for around $240 installed, give or take $10-$15. Nitto is the cheapest at $215 installed each. The BFG's were $300 each installed!:eek: They had set of PC XAT's in an 18" wheel, really liked them. They said most ATZ's they sell for trucks that tow frequently usually see around 25-30K miles. I'm just trying to find out more info on the 65psi deal, probably don't have as stiff of a sidewall, 2 vs 3 ply? Now leaning between ProComp XAT's and MT ATZ's probably. Chris

I believe that part the DOT requirement to be an E range tire is that the tire is rated for 80 psi. I know that BFG has both D:65psi and E:80psi rated all terrains that are both rated at 3195 lb's which is probably what is contributing to your confusion.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=All-Terrain+T%2FA+KO

It's very strange that both tires would be rated for the same weight which makes me think the E range tires are probably underated since no OEM truck requires more than a 3195 lb rating. Of course it's anyone's guess. Lb. rating per lb. rating the D range tires have less plies and will ride better than an E range tire.

Not knowing exactly what your rear axle weights are with your camper hooked up it's hard to guess exactly how much "tire" you need for your setup.

I'm in the same boat as even looking into the exact tire sizes as you.
Ive ran the bridgestone revo's befor and liked the handling but not my local cost for them, but I am also increasing my towing weight and dont know if they'll cut the bull as far as max tire load. This leads me to the hankooks or the Nitto's, both of which I cannot get any hard data on why their carring capacity is so much greater than their competetors.
Now as far a the 65psi tires, I am steering clear of them. Have too many caravaning buddies that are running the 65 psi e rated tires and flinging tread from the tires heating up. Now these are not blow outs but total delam jobs, that destroy bed sides and fronts of trailers. To top it off we aren't even traveling at high speeds at low pressures.

You have enough wheel width for the Nitto 305's, but will 12.36 width be a rub issue?

General rule of thumb, but varies by mfgr:

285 = 11.5
295 = 12.0
305 = 12.5

I'm a Toyo fan but next year I go Nitto TG in 285/55/20 on 9W wheels

i love my nittos.....ive run 2 sets before and have turned about 7 of my friends onto them and love them....they tow great quiet on the street amazing in the rain and snow....not one bad thing about them...i killed mine in 30k but i was VERY HARD on them including trips to the dragstrip ......one of my friends ran his dead bald and got 56k out of them on a very hard worked and over loadedf150 ....i said atz's because one of my friends swears by them on his 05 cummins and ive seen his truck do some crazy stuff on those tires and they look great and he gets about 35-40k on them...

Wow, I can't believe your buddies are getting that kind of mileage of the Nitto's. I've got 22k on mine and have hit the wear bars on two of them and the other 2 are close behind. I've rotated them 3 times now which is getting a bit rediculous. Great tire capability wise, they handle my 7000 lb rear axle weight just fine and go decently in the sloppy stuff. They just don't last.

I've noticed that they hardened up quite a bit as they got some heat cycles in them. I would venture to say that if you put these on in the fall the cool weather would help them wear better until the rubber hardened up.

I'm going Hankook or Toyo's next time.

Buy Michelins and don't look back

The problem with michelins is that they don't have the weight rating that I need for my setup they don't even make a E range tire in 285/70/17.

The other larger problems is good god are they expensive, but yeah guys get lots of miles out of them.

But the weight rating is still 3195 lbs which is a D-rated tire. The tires with a 3700+ rating are E rated in a 285/70-17.
I went thru the same thing when I bought my tires.

The key to a Nitto TG is to get the 10 ply version. I have 60k on a set of 285's on stock PYO's and they still have tread on them. The DC Crushers i have on my H2's are 10 ply with a 65 psi max and i have towed heavy a few times with them and have had zero issues.

3195lbs doesn't mean it's a D rated tire. C,D,E rates mean little these days when looking at psi, load capacity, which is why I'm having issues finding the tire I want with the load rate I want. Factory 245's are E rated, 3042lbs, Factory 17" and 265's are E rated, 3195, but 80 psi. The Xtreme AT's and ATZ's are E rated, but only 65psi, with 3195lbs. I've also found many D rated tires with load capacity of 3400lbs, but then they have 65psi as well. It's just not cut and dry anymore. Used to be ply, 6, 8, 10, now, very few tires actually have 8 or 10 plies, but they are rated to be as strong as an 8 or 10 ply tire. My Toyo MT's now have 10P.R. on the sidewall, meaning it's rated at 10 plies, but only has 6 I believe. I know an earlier post stated 65psi E rated tires seems to chunk more, but that's the only comment like that I've ever seen on boards or people I know? I know I'm not over factory specs when towing my 5ver, if my truck came with 3042lbs, and I increase almost 150lbs ea. tire, I should still be fine. Otherwise, I may just get the 285 Nitto's (305's are 70% aspect ratio, too tall to fit with the extra width without a lift) and deal with having a smaller tire than what I have now. Chris

I ended up going with Mickey Thompson ATZ's, 305/65R17's. Getting them this Friday. I went with them over the ProComps due to the PC's only have a 2 ply sidewall on that size, next size up has 3 ply. The MT ATZ's have a 3 ply sidewall in the 305's. Going camping this weekend, should be a nice tryout for the tires. I'll get some pics and review of them towing a 14K 5ver next week. Seems to be few reviews towing, hopefully I will be able to help someone out in the future. Chris
