I've got an 1983 1 ton dually with a 454 & th400. I do a lot of hauling and towing. I've got a 16' dual axle flatbed trailer and a 20' enclosed box trailer. I sure would like a trans with a overdrive. What are some good choices? I've also got a 97 GMC 1/2 ton with a 350 and 4l60. The 4l60 was a good trans right up to 148,000 miles then the sun shell thing gave out. Rebuilt it with the "Beast" replacement part. If i end up going with a 4l60 or 4l80, how do i deal with the electronics? No computer on the 1983.

i think the 4l60 is just the same trans as a 700r4 just with an elec valve body

I wouldn't try to make a 4L60 or any 700R4 based transmission live in a 1 ton truck, they just aren't up to it. When the 4L60 in my wife's Firehawk goes out I'll be putting a 4L80 into it if that helps you decide which you should use in the big block one ton that tows trailers. Use the 4L80E with a stand alone controller module. It's one of the strongest stock transmissions you could easily install in that truck. Here's one:

Have you considered a Gear Vendor OD unit?

gear vendors units will not live through towing. they barely live through normal everyday use. ive seen tons of them laying in junkyards and stuff all burnt up from towing or being behind too large of an engine.
