jermstyle 07-19-2005, 07:20 PM What is everyone paying for an oil change in their Duramax?
I was just quoted $99.00 to change my oil and I am providing oil and filter.

Big_Gunz_ 07-19-2005, 07:25 PM I just had my done at the dealer, $38.
MrsSpoolin 07-19-2005, 07:39 PM Last time we had someone change the oil for us, it was $55, they provide filter and oil. They used a synthetic blend.
Why have someone else do it if you have the filter and oil?
skytop49 07-19-2005, 08:00 PM $54.00 at dealer
gardnerteam 07-19-2005, 08:14 PM Usually do my own, but range paid on the road with me supplying oil and filter has been from a $30 high to a $2.00 low (Mexico and Guatemala) for labor and they dispose of the oil. One place in Mexico takes the pan of used oil, mixes a red brick clay with it, and "paves" his working lot.
ktmrfs 07-19-2005, 08:21 PM $20 at the dealer for oil change, filter, lube for as long as I own the vehicle, since I bought it from them. Otherwise close to $60
aka108 07-19-2005, 11:55 PM GM dealer here in Elko about $30.00 with me supplying oil only. Dealer supplies OEM filter. This includes lube service and check of all fluid levels.
sdteb 07-20-2005, 12:20 AM 13.00 at the goodyear store...friend is mgr there....plus about 30 for the oil and 5 for the filter...synthetic rotella is all i put in it..

duramaxgoose 07-20-2005, 07:05 AM Mine's F R E E ! !, my dealer offers this to everyone who buys from them. GerryLane GMC/Chevy
CamberIN 07-20-2005, 08:08 AM Do mine myself...$30 bux...mobil one filter and Rotella
TxChristopher 07-20-2005, 08:12 AM $45 at kwik kar, they provide everything.
.
MaxxedOut 07-20-2005, 04:53 PM 54.00 dollars at the dealer they supply oil filter and say they do a lube and a 27 point inspec.
Oilbrnr 07-20-2005, 06:06 PM Do it myself for >$30. Delo 400 from Costco and GM filter. Chassis lube at the same time and rotate the tires. A bit of a PITA, but I know it was done correctly.
Goldneye 07-20-2005, 06:34 PM Same here as Oilbrnr states.
dan_diesel 07-20-2005, 07:06 PM Same as Goldneye and Oilbrnr, other than I went with the Mobil 1 filter and with the price I paid at Costco (last time) for a case of Delo 400, about $27. Plus a bit of cussing as it was my 1st time and the oil draining out hit the skid plate and went everywhere :( (what a mess). I'll be trimming that plate before next time ;)

Yeah! Isn't that a piece of engineering genius!!! I used every four letter word I could think of... twice! Dumb SOB's at GM. Probably the same schmuck that designed the cooling system on the '04.5+ trucks. Moron.
(Can you tell I'm just a bit upset still?)

5 years of doing LOF on my Cummins, and neary a drop was spilled changing the filter. Oh, and it was always full and ready to go installing a new one too. Who knows what kind of damage we incur every time we change the filter that you can't prime. (unless there is some cranking secret that I don't know about...)
Mine is FREE too!
For now, it's a 3yr/36,000mi offer. I get free oil and labor with a multi-check inspection from the dealer I bought it from here in MO. I have to buy the filter.
At one of the `quick oil change places` if i can remember is around $50 or so.

G-Maxkingpuller 07-20-2005, 07:44 PM Everybody is talking about different oils, what is the best to use? Synthetic??
deadfurrow 07-21-2005, 02:21 AM Everybody is talking about different oils, what is the best to use? Synthetic??
Been argued many times. Try a search.
I was just quoted $99.00 to change my oil and I am providing oil and filter.
IMO, that is highway robbery. There's a Freightliner dealership that I drive by that will do an 8+ gallon oil change in a semi for $99.00, including oil & filter. If you drive to my house & bring your oil & filter, I'll change it for a 6-pack.:D
Goldneye 07-21-2005, 11:19 AM dan diesel & oilbrnr sounds like you guy's do not have a FUMOTO oil drain valve?

All I can say is you need to find a different place to change your oil! The place that you got the price from are Censored ! The only difference between a Duramax and a gasser truck is the amount of oil required! What reason did they give for that price?
They either don't want your business or think that you are a sucker!
I change my own oil & I can tell you, the Dmax is not rocket science as far as changing the oil is concerned.
Search around. You should be able to find a place that actually WANTS your business. You should be able to find a place that will do it for half of your quoted price & supply the oil & filter to boot! :exactly:
Good Luck,
Britt
Oilbrnr 07-21-2005, 12:53 PM dan diesel & oilbrnr sounds like you guy's do not have a FUMOTO oil drain valve?
Mmm, no, I'm talking about the poor oil filter position/design. Even with a large ziploc around the filter, it is a PITA. And not being able to pre fill the new filter is a bad design when you have a turbo in the mix.
navion 07-21-2005, 01:37 PM Mmm, no, I'm talking about the poor oil filter position/design. Even with a large ziploc around the filter, it is a PITA. And not being able to pre fill the new filter is a bad design when you have a turbo in the mix.
A bent piece of cardboard inserted under the filter and another under the drain plug will catch ALL of the oil if properly done. The oil drain valve does make this operation a no brainier.
As far as the oil filter design/placement. Yes, it would be nice to be able to pre fill the filter before installing it. I always pre fill any filter that I can. However if the engine is allowed to idle until oil pressure registers, no damage will occur. My 96 4 WD Suburban has over 320,000 miles on it. The engine has never been apart. The oil filter on it lays on it's side, so it is impossible to prefill. If this was an issue, then my Suburban would have had a problem by now! :exactly:
As far as the turbo goes, turbos have a small oil sump in the center section. This allows for the turbo be be lubricated after sitting for quite some time. Ask yourself, what could be worse, a turbo sitting for over a week allowing all the oil to drain off, or sitting for 30 minutes while the oil is changed? Neither is an issue to be concerned about because there is sufficient oil to lube the turbo retained in the center section.
Believe me, GM has extensive experience on this subject. They are as sensitive to dry starts as you are. Just don't start it up & rev the crap out of it until after you get a stable oil pressure indication.
If you still don't like the situation, spring for a remote mounted filter & mount it so you can pre-fill the filter. Personally, I wouldn't take the time or expense.
Just take a little care & you can change the oil & filter & keep everything nice and dry.
Good Luck,
Britt

Well I ended up just changing the oil my self later that night. I always done my own oil changes and all work on my cars/trucks so I wasn’t thrilled about ‘having’ my oil changed anyway.
I am working on a project away from home and have zero tools/shop so…
The little encounter with this people at the local auto service center went something like this.
I pull up in my clean new black 05 LT HD CC, walk in wearing freshly pressed slacks and a colored dress shirt (looking like someone that would never touch a wrench)
Me: how much for labor to change oil on a Duramax diesel? I’m providing oil and filter.
Him: $99.00 plus tax
Me: $9.00?
Him: Nope, $99.00, do you know how much oil that engine holds?
Me: Yes, approximately 10 quarts
Him: Well do you know what’s involved with changing the oil?
Me: Yes, step one – drain the oil. step two – replace filter. step three – pour in new oil. I could do this in less than 30 minutes.
Him: Okay, you rack up the truck and change the oil in less than 30 minutes and I’ll pay you $99.00
Me: Are you talking? I’m sorry, I don’t speak monkey.
Walked out.
I ended up changing my oil in 22 minutes without lifting the truck at all in the dark while listening to the radio and drinkin a cold DrPepper.

He thought that he had some yuppie type that bought a diesel because it was cool but didn't know the first thing about what he drove. He was a smart ACensored to boot! If he keeps that attitude for long he will be filling out forms down at the local unemployment office!:muahaha:
People and businesses that have attitudes like this one are usually self purging after word gets out. :D

idahofox 07-22-2005, 03:18 AM This works for me.
Oil pan: I installed a Fumoto valve at the first oil change. Now, with a piece of tubing from the fumoto nipple into a 2.5 gal jug, not a drop is spilled.
Oil filter:
Pre filling: The filter is divided into Two cavities; pre filtered oil and filtered oil. The pre filtered oil cavity is the largest and the oil normaly enters it through the series of holes on the outer edge. The oil in the filtered oil cavity exits the filter through the center/threaded hole in the middle.
I fill the pre filtered oil cavity through the series of holes on the outer edge. Pour in slowly until the oil pools on the top of the filter, ( I stand the filter upright in the box it came in, does't tip over that way, un less you kick it  ) let it set and pour in more, until it will take no more. If there is no oil pool on the top of the filter, at this point you could turn the filter up-side-down and not spill much (teaspoon) if any oil. With out pressure the oil will not move to the filtered oil cavity. You have now filled the filter with fresh oil to about 2/3 rd's of its capacity.
R&R the filter:
Take Two paper towels (Bounty/Brawny is good) and fold them togeter Twice = 4X5 8 ply paper towel pad (PTP).
Crack the filter loose with out breaking the seal. Hold the PTP at the top of the filter, lower side, spin the filter off quickly and turn the filter up right. Dispose of the filter and PTP as you will. The PTP will capture the little oil that escapes, the key is to get the filter vertical, quickly.
The pre-filled filter should be ready, if you haven't knocked it over -:t . Some oil will have tranfered from the pre filtered to the filtered cavity. The result is that oil will not come back-out of the filter even at a serious angle.
Make a new PTP, if you mucked up the first one, wet the seal with fresh motor oil. Hold the PTP at the lower top of the filter, line it up and spin it on. Tighten properly, do not over tighten.
The filter is Not pre charged, that takes pressure (motor running) however it takes the motor Less Time to charge a partially filled filter than an Empty filter.
No oil on the floor, driveway, face or clothes ( ya' right :D ).
Good luck, hope it works for you as it has for me.

Canoeslough17 07-22-2005, 07:06 AM I supply the oil and filter and pay $15 for the labor
michael nelson 07-22-2005, 02:27 PM $69.99. called 3 different stealers,all the same???

How much greater than "> $30" Or do you mean less than "<"?
towdog333 09-17-2005, 11:38 AM  mine are all year compliments of gm, usually i do it myself and haven't done one yet
patracy 09-17-2005, 12:31 PM $30, but I did it myself.
Scotty C 09-17-2005, 12:45 PM I took my 97 in for an oil change an some dork stripped out the drain plug.......that was the last time anybody else touched one of my vehicles.....I take pleasure in the preventative maint............$65 to change the fuel filter???........i did it in 15 mins........just my $.02..........Scott
Canoeslough17 09-17-2005, 10:48 PM i supply the oil and filter, Firestone charges me $15 labor.
oilfield_trash 09-19-2005, 12:47 AM My dealer changes the oil for free provided I leave the sticker on the back and have the plate on the front when I come in.
noreaster 09-19-2005, 12:58 AM $51 for oil & filter, do it myself use Amsoil oil & filter
RichLockyer 09-19-2005, 03:57 AM If you're providing the oil and filter, $99 is r*a*p*e
That is friggin insane.
It's a 15 minute job, and you don't even need a jack.
The second time you do it, it'll be even easier if you install a Fumoto valve during the first change.
I buy my oil at WalMart and a Mobil-1 filter at Autozone. Last oil change was $11 for the filter and about $15 or so for the oil, but I'm switching to synthetic, so next change will be $55 total and 15 minutes out of my day.
durajohn 09-20-2005, 10:01 AM Mine is free at dealership, Nabers, plus car washes are also free as long as I own the truck.
newcombjay 09-20-2005, 08:46 PM I just checked at two local dealerships. Once charges $58 and the other charges $60.
Duramaxdad 09-20-2005, 10:30 PM $37.00 for me at the dealer, and every 3RD change is FREE!! They even vacuum it out for me!!:D
scottdiesel 09-20-2005, 10:35 PM Dealer charges me $46.
$20 oil, $9.50 filter the rest is labor and tax.
