What happens if you dont have the low side pressure switch hooked up at all? Could that be bad? Right now its jumpered, and the system is dismantled, so before I hook it up, should I be worried about it being jumpered.
Thanks!

with the low side switch jumpered the compressor will pump when ac/defrost is turned on even though the system has no refrigerant in it.with no refirgerant there is nothing to carry the lube oil through the system and pump will seize.
its best to take the jumper out untill you get the system charged.
who ever you get to charge things will check the operation of the low side switch.

x1000 Will not take long for that to freeze up running dry BTW.

Cool! I know my system was never dry, but the compressor has failed 3 times. I bought the car with it jumpered, so I wonder if on really hot days the r134 runs too low.

Ya, running it with the system jumoered is not the ideal situation. At best you should only do this if the pressure switch goes bad just to get you by. Running it with low or no charge will facilitate the oil to not flow through the system, and you will also not get cooling back to the compressor. Both are detrimental to the compressor. 134a does not typically drop suction pressure, so there could be a restriction in the system if you are running low suction with the proper charge in there. Typical restrictions are in the metering device, and or the drier. I would fix the swtich, weigh in the proper charge, and then check running pressures. If you are low on pressure after that then you have a restriction. Do all tests with the fan on high to make sure you have the system properly loaded. Fan on low, will have a lower suction pressure then when on high and can cause the compressor clutch to cycle even with proper charge on a cooler day. Hope that helps.
