Hi folks! I am a new owner of a 6.5 td/hd 1996 GMC 3500. When I step on the accelerator theree is a slight time gap before the transmission engages and I'm underway. Is there an adjustment that I can make? What do i need to look at to resolve this problem? Satch from alberta.

There is a known problem in the valve body of some of these trannys, especially prevelent after a rebuild. A good tranny shop will be able to help you out. I had the same problem on my 94 after getting a new tranny for it and the shop fixed it by changing a sleeve and a plunger in the valve body.

Thanks Firefighter. Was there a sound when you had the problem, like a clunk. Something like when a universal joint goes? Its not that in my case as the u-joints were all replaced and the driveshaft rebalanced a few miles ago. I have no idea if the trans was rebuilt. satch

No clunk in mine. The plunger that was causing the problem was for controlling the line pressure (I think) and it would stick a little untill engine rpm changed. Sorry, sounds like a different problem. Me thinks you will want to be taking a look inside that thing before it gets really expensive!
