Hey,
I've been gleaning good info from here for a long time since I had an '88 GMC crewcab 6.2 dually. Now I have a '95 G30 "Y" code 6.5NA and just spent a couple hours in a parking lot with the family removing the vacuum pump after it siezed (made noises for all of three days)before it ate the belt. Need a vacuum pump to power the HVAC controls. Are there any other options other than a stock replacement since I heard the rebuilts don't last long, they are expensive in Canada ($360) and they are a bugger to replace? Thanks, Mike

I might be wrong, but my understanding is the only thing the vacuum pump on a 6.5 controls is the wastegate on the turbo which is why most people get a manual boost controller and get rid of it.

On the older GM diesels the vaccum pump controls things like Heating and AC controls for an example. He also said that its a 6.2 NA so it would be safe to assume he does hot have a wastegate lol. The pumps are not difficult to replace at all, 3 bolts I belive.

My bad i misread. I thought the last year for vaccume controlled HVAC was 95 but dont quote me on that. Its a NA truck apparently so it wouldnt have a wastegate. (clearly)

His truck is an '88.......
There are some electric vacuum pumps. I've seen them used on big trucks. You might look into those, they may last longer, but will probably cost almost as much as a new pump.
My 96 doesn't use vacuum for the HVAC controls. I dumped the pump a couple years ago. No regrets. No wastegate either...

Sorry for the confusion, guess that's why they say fill out your sig. The vehicle in question is a '95 G30 Van old body style non-turbo 6.5. Because it is the old body style the heating AC controls are still vacuum controlled. The OE pump is held on by 3 bolts threaded into the pump from the firewall side that because of the accessory bracket and the van body 2 or the bolts you can't see but can feel with two fingers, otherwise it would have been a piece of cake. Of course if I removed the AC and powersteering pump completely then took the acc bracket off it may have been easier as well. Who sells the electric pumps?
