: Funny thing happen to today!!
RUQWKNF27 08-01-2010, 12:35 AM Truck was parked on a slight uphill driveway for about 15 minutes and got in it cranked it went about 4 feet and it went dead! Tried to recrank it twice to no effect then remembered reading something onetime about trying to prime if it does not start. So I pumped the primer maybe 3 times and it was already firm from the start. Jumped in the truck and it cranked right up. Truck has 102,000 miles on it with 7000 miles on fuel filter. I have always chaned it at 10K so I think it still has life left. I have never had the 1st problem with the truck so thisis weird. Drove home and recranked it like 6 times and starts everytime. I also do not have a SES code.
roy67ss 08-01-2010, 12:59 AM Were you below 1/4 tank of fuel? I recently had a similar issue when the low fuel warning came on.
RUQWKNF27 08-01-2010, 10:05 AM No tank is full filled up yesterday afternoon. I got a feeling it is something to do with fuel.
biggreen2010 08-01-2010, 10:10 AM mine did the same thing i believe the orings @ the fuel primer start to seep in a little air my solution was to install a lift pump like GM should have done in the first place I installed a pump off a 6.5 not had a problem since thats my .02
skleppy 08-02-2010, 08:20 AM Do the 6.5 trucks have an in-tank fuel pump? I wonder...that might something to try for a somewhat factory style lift pump. Not all that keen on chopping my fuel lines up to put an aftermarket pump in.
biggreen2010 08-02-2010, 09:24 PM not to my knowlege, in fact no they dont frame mounted only--good idea though! i wonder what the effects of diesel are on a gas pump any ideas???? im sure somthing could be done with an old pump out of a gasser
skleppy 08-03-2010, 10:10 AM I know for a fact the retaining ring on the fuel pump of a Dodge with a Cummins is the same size as the fuel sending unit on ours. Instead of using a gasser pump which is made for a lighter fuel rather than an oil such as diesel, a pump out of a Cummins might fair a whole lot better.
jlawles2 08-03-2010, 08:38 PM That or you could put a Raptor on it. There are several companies that make diesel fuel pumps. The local parts house may even have one if you ask.
Dave01PSD 08-03-2010, 08:45 PM same thing happened to me once but I was on flat ground. Hasnt happened again since..
RUQWKNF27 08-04-2010, 05:41 PM Well today I went back to the same driveway and parked in the same spot and guess what! It did it again! I have driven the truck 3 days since it happen last and not a problem but go back and whammo! This is crazy. I picked up one of those new WIX/Napa Gold fuel filters they are talking about in here and goona change the fliter and inspect the fuel housing for cracks or anything crazy. Only other thing I can think of is I have changed from Standadyne Fuel mix to XPD Summer Formula but that should not affect cranking I would think.
callie454 08-04-2010, 06:48 PM Well today I went back to the same driveway and parked in the same spot and guess what! It did it again! Stop parking there...problem solved.
RUQWKNF27 08-04-2010, 09:51 PM Yes I was waiting for that! Changed the fuel filter today and got to reading about guys saying to check the shrader valve on pass side ot see if there is fuel in there. Well I took of my black cap and there was and also some small bubbles. Not enough to where it was coming out the cap but there was fuel in the bottom. Might need to do some more research.
My truck is doing the exact same thing. I also park in my driveway that is on a slight grade. It has happened three times in the past week. I just had 4 injectors changed the week before. Taking it back to the dealer on Monday.
Mine also started right up after pumping the fuel filter.
QuikSSilver 08-07-2010, 11:01 AM mine did that exact thing, a while back so im a bit foggy on it. but i remember it being the bleeder screw by the fuel filter. stupid little plastic thing was cracked or had a bad oring... and when parked uphill it would let air into the system.
so for a couple bucks id start there.... bleeder screw and get any other orings or seals near by rather then getting some hoky-doke pump put in there as a bandaid instead of finding and fixing the problem.
peckwh 08-07-2010, 11:13 AM Filter housing may be sucking air. Two years ago, I was towing the fifth wheel across the Arizona desert in the middle of July. Shut it off to fuel up and would not restart. After 30 minutes of pump priming and cranking the starter, a guy with a Power Stroke pulled up, shot a squirt of starter fluid in the intake tube and it fired right up. Never had the problem again until this July. Was towing again, pulled off at the same exit and the truck died on me again. Pumped and cranked another 20 minutes and finally got it going. Drove another 120 miles to home, shut it off and after an hour truck wouldn't start again. Primed the pump and fired right up. Noticed small seepage coming from the base of the primer but stopped leaking once fired up. Dealer wanted $837.00 for a new filter housing so I bought a reengineered rebuilt fuel filter housing from DMAX Wrenchkit for $280.00. Comes with a lifetime warranty and have been running with it for a month and a half now with no issues.
RUQWKNF27 08-07-2010, 08:55 PM Good to hear that you guys are having the same problem! What is weird is that it has only done it twice in the same spot , no where else. If it was injectors I would think it would do it well lets say other places too! I also bought one of those billet plugs for the bottom of the fuel filter to eliminate the WIF sensor. I figured that would be good. Good note also on the bleeder plug I will go ahead and ck that out and put a new oring on it.What was GM thinking putting a plastic plug there???? I saw somewhere a metal plug. Might have been on Ebay.
kford13 08-10-2010, 12:09 AM I had a similar problem where my truck failed to start, like yours, when parked in the same spot (at work, not where I like being stuck). Each time it was the day after towing my 5er. Truck would start and die. Not just that, but, key fob would no longer lock/unlock and the nothing else worked (windows, etc). Called mechanic, he said the anti-theft activated but not sure how to reset. Called dealer, he said to disconnect bat on passenger side. I did and it fired right up. Turns out, I had an intermittent short on my trailer brakes. Though I hadnt had this happen before, I had noticed that I would get a reset from time to time on the mirror and stereo after towing, it just seemed to get worse more recently.
May not be your issue, but may help someone.
