This is my first post on the forum. Today is also my birthday.:ro) Kind of ironic dontcha think?

Anyway......

I have an '05 Dark Gray Metallic CC/LB 6.6 Duramax Diesel 4x4 LT. It's my first diesel vehicle and I have a TON of questions. I've only had it about a month. Since discovering this wonderful forum a few days ago I've been reading as many threads/posts on this forum as I can about all sorts of topics. I'm officially hooked!!! Fun stuff!!

My first question is regarding the rear differential drain plug. I am about to change fluids for the first time (1,400 miles on the clock) and was crawling around under the truck today to get an idea where things were. At first I could not find the drain plug for the rear differential because I was looking for a bolt head. After a little feeling around I noticed an indented hex head bolt flush with the bottom. All/most of the posts I've seen about this plug indicate that it is a bolt head (~15mm?) and I guess I was assuming it would be protruding. Could it be that the '05's have this hex head bolt instead? I don't want to remove the wrong thing.

Also, I am assuming that the '05 will hold 4 quarts of fluid just like previous models....yes?

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions very soon.

Under the very bottem you should see and plug that has a inverted hole for a 3/8 rachet in it. The back on the diff. cover there should be a plug sticking out of it that you could use a adjustable wrench on it. The bottem plug is you magnet so be sure to wipe it clean to get all the shavings off of it.
Good luck and have fun driving one of the best trucks on the road!

Welcome to the Place Larry! To answer your second question, yes, it does take 4 quarts. There is a section in the DIY about it. You can find it here:

Enjoy!

Duramax_Farmer,

Thanks for the clarification. I 'preciate it.

I did read the "3/8 ratchet" thing before but I guess it just didn't sink in.

All I need now is to hit the lotto so I can add everything from my drool list. :D
