: Fully Built Motor as DD?

Whats the problem with having a truck that has a fully built engine, running twins and using it every day for tooling around and towing? I keep reading about people with race motors dont want to drive them daily for some reason but dont know why.

This is supposing you're not constantly running the Race Tune.

Just curious so don't blast me :D

I'd think thats the only reason for not doing it is running around all the time in race tune... but I don't think it'd matter if you aren't flogging it the entire time. I mean guys with F-bodies with full built motors run around all the time and don't have issues.

Because when they are done with a build they have anywhere from $30-50k or more in them for starters.

For most it becomes like that classic muscle car that you take out only when the weather is nice etc.

I see... Maybe I'm from a different school of thought where the more I love my truck, the more I want to drive it, even if it is a 90-100K investment

for me a 90-100k investment would have to be a house lol...but I can't say much i don't even have a built motor and have dumped a ton into mine

My engine is completely built and the truck's an everyday driver. The whole point of having a fast truck is to drive it and enjoy it. The DSP5 switch helps. Mine is usually set at #3 which is 530hp on the Gillett dyno. Idaho Rob did say that trucks with built engines often aren't real nice to drive. Mine drives very well. Depends on the turbo/injector combination and how it's tuned.

Build it and rock it everyday. The beauty with diesels is that you can have an 800hp, 700hp, 600hp, 500hp, and 400hp all on the same switch.

An 11 sec truck has no problem being driven on the street. And plenty of the people are here do it. It just makes it all that much more fun!

Like Utah said, its all in how the truck is set up.

Are you around SLC/PC UTAHSKI? Right now I'm living in SLC and work in PC.

What kind of power are you laying down Steezy? Quarter times?

The only real issue that we see with the High Hp (700+)levels is piston life. You use a forged racing style piston and your looking at a life around 50K. Use a stock cast piston modified then you need to limit the power to about 700 or so to keep long life in it. It's a trade that you the owner has to be willing to make.

50K on pistons at 700HP. The real question is, can you run around town in a 700HP truck and make them last maybe 100K if you drive like a normal human being? I guess it's a ridiculous question because why would you run a big tune to drive like an average DMaxer?

I'm right under 600hp in my 01 and I have a hard time driving it like a sane person ):h. It's be way worse above 700hp.

Lord help us if you ever run more than 700, you'll have to change your user name to "51/50":D

I've been driving for over 2 years on my race tune at over 640 rwhp on the stock motor. Prolly closer to 700 rwhp and no problems here.

I drive mine every day, routinely putting 400 miles a week on it. It's been this way for about a year and a half. It stays at 780 rwhp just in case I need it :). The opportunity to run it WOT through the gears usually only happens a couple times per week unless we're testing something. It can be done, there are a few of us out there.

Mine has cut stock pistons

Wow Nick! So do you tow at all with a tune like that? I assume that you're running a DSP5 right?

you can speak when you can figure out how to remove a turbo...or wrench on something in general...

Last time I checked his truck is faster than yours and he can spool a turbo the size of a 4202;)

That's weird...two turbos later and your truck still runs fine...you must REALLY not know how to turn a wrench huh Nick?

What has this thread turned into? It's gone off on a tangeant of underlying sarcasm and spite for one another. Brilliant!

Oh and i see you have ran a best of 12.4 @ 110 huh? Thats pretty good i ran 12.1's with a single cp3 but i have no idea what im doing?

Stroke250 is also running a single cp3. If you want evidence of how my S400 kits run maybe you should read this thread (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365708). Also, you've never purchased anything from me so please stop pretending you have. Why don't you just try to make a meaningful contribution instead of being so critical?

Back on topic. I've been using this piece (http://www.spracingonline.com/images/products/3643.jpg)to significantly improve the drivability of the truck along with a mixture controller (http://dmaxcentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3715) for managing smoke output. Drive-ability is my first priority when building a calibration. Ask anyone who's been in my truck.

Nick

ps-It makes power too...

There is no problem with it. I do it and my good buddy Garret does it. We both have fully built motors with 100% over injectors, cam, heads, dual pumps, crowers, mahle.........except i have a 75mm with nitrous and Garrett has 95mm/71mm compounds. Both make over 900hp and we drive the shit out of em! I take mine to work every day and drive to all the events!

I have never Dyno'd my truck, and honestly, that number doesnt mean much to me (not saying it doesnt to others, I just dont really care i guess).

I have an extremely mild tune in it right now, and still making some adjustments to my turbos as far as wastegate and fixing a couple screw ups I made when I was fabricating the piping

With how it sits right now and only a 2300Us tune in, my guess is probably around 450-500. I drive it all over the place, tow, road trips, I just towed about 5000lbs, over mountain passes and off road, in the mountains. Nothing ever got out of hand and it did EXACTLY what I wanted it to at all times. I made the tune so it would do just that...be driveable in ALL situations. I can merge into traffic with the same load staying under 1100 EGTs and not blacking out any intersections.

I am also set up with a DSP5 switch, so I can instantly add another 100-150 HP whenever i "need" it. I could still drive around on that tune, but its a little heavy on the fuel for racing.

My motor is not built, but its not going to make a difference. If and when it does get built, the only thing I will do is add fuel/timing/blah blah blah to the top end, and still have a completely streetable truck. Tuning is what is going to seperate your truck from daily driver and pain in the ass.

Good point you make there Steezy.
