i think the only difference is the case is heavier. if its 4x4 trans with a diesel converter and a diesel govener its good to go.

a TH400 that is for a 2wd wont work without some parts changing. i think you need a new tail shaft, and a new tail housing, and a longer driveshaft and shorter front driveshaft and some other details if i remember right since its shorter than the 700. someone else knows more than i do about the lenths so let them chime in before you buy it and find out it wont work/

To put a 400 in place of a 700 you will need a new input shaft in the transfer case as well as the correct adapter between trans and transfer case. If you use all factory parts you will not have to modify driveshafts.
The 700 uses a 27 spline male output shaft and the 400 uses a 32 spline male output shaft.
The flex plate will be different from 700 to 400 as well, bolt spacing for the converter is different between the 2.
You will need a passing gear switch that mounts above the throttle pedal and run 12 volts to it and then a wire down to the trans.
The fill tube is different between the two as well.
You will need the vacuum regulator that mounts on the side of the injection pump to send a signal for upshifts and downshift on the 400. Use an adjustable vac modulator and put a line pressure gauge on it to make sure you don't have high line pressure at idle as some 400's have been known to push on the crank if they have excessive line pressure at idle.
The 700 has a 3.06:1 first gear ratio and the 400 has a 2.48:1 first gear ratio, you will lose a little low end at take off.
Good luck!!!

Yep. The NP208 has a 27 spline input that should fit right up to any 4x4 700r4 or 4l60 adapter. One thing to make sure of is that you have the cast alum torque converter cover and support rods, as well as the provisions on the trans for it. I've seen a few 700r4s from S-10 series trucks that seemed to take sheet metal screws to hold the cover on. Your "HD" trans should have "ears" that taper out away from the mounting holes, as well as six threaded holes on the bottom, M10x1.50 IIRC.

All 700's built for 2WD applications, including passenger cars and light trucks had the tin cover and sheet metal screw holes. The "K" case had the six tapped holes for the aluminum cover w/strut rod holes. Back in the 80's, the GM price for the "K" case was much higher than the 2WD case. I did see some techs replace a "K" case with the car case but I wouldn't advise it, based on seeing some broken cases from off-roading without the strut supports.

well the 700r4hd has those supporting rods mine never had them
